In a time of political intrigue and ancient customs, Mei, a beautiful but impoverished young woman, is caught in a web of debt that her father owes to the ruthless King of the Eastern Kingdom. In order to settle the debt, the king demands that Mei marry him, an offer she cannot refuse. Forced into a life of royal luxury, Mei initially resents the king’s domineering presence, viewing him as a cold, manipulative ruler. But as days turn into weeks, the king's complex and passionate nature begins to reveal itself, and Mei finds herself drawn to him in ways she never expected. As they navigate their tumultuous relationship, filled with power struggles and deep, lingering desires, both Mei and the king must confront their own vulnerabilities. What starts as a marriage of necessity slowly turns into a fierce, consuming love that neither can control, leading them to question everything they once believed about duty, passion, and the power of love.

The Price of Blood
The bustling streets of Xiangcheng were alive with the clang of blacksmith hammers and the cries of merchants hawking their wares, but to Mei, it was a blur of noise and chaos. Her hands tightened around the crumpled letter from the royal court, her breath shallow as she read its contents again. The bold, merciless words stared back at her: Your father’s debts remain unpaid. To settle what is owed, you are hereby summoned to the Eastern Palace by order of His Majesty, King Jian Yun. The ink bled slightly where her tears had fallen, but no amount of smudging could erase the weight of the demand. Her father, once a respected merchant, had gambled away their wealth, leaving their family drowning in debt. When the collectors came, he had promised repayment, borrowing from powerful nobles and shady figures alike. But he’d failed again and again—until, finally, the king himself intervened. The price of failure was her. "Mei, you don’t have to go," her younger brother, Han, said desperately as she packed the few belongings she could carry. His voice cracked, a reminder of how much he still relied on her. "I must," Mei said softly, forcing a calmness she didn’t feel. "If I don’t, they’ll come for you next. Or worse, for Mother." "But the king—" Han swallowed hard. "They say he’s a tyrant. That he shows no mercy." Mei didn’t answer. What could she say? That she feared the same? That the thought of stepping into the king’s palace felt like walking into a lion’s den? Yet what choice did she have? Her family’s survival hung in the balance. As the royal guards arrived to escort her, Mei held her head high, refusing to let them see her fear. The journey to the palace was long and silent, the countryside blurring past as she steeled herself for whatever awaited. When they finally arrived, the grandeur of the Eastern Palace took her breath away. Its towering red walls, gilded rooftops, and sprawling gardens seemed like something out of a dream. But dreams were deceptive, and Mei knew better than to be lulled by beauty. The guards led her into the throne room, where King Jian Yun awaited. He was not what she expected. Seated on the throne, dressed in black and gold robes, he exuded an aura of absolute power. His presence dominated the room, even as he sat in silence. Sharp, intelligent eyes the color of obsidian studied her with unnerving intensity, and his jaw was set in a way that suggested he was a man accustomed to getting what he wanted. Mei’s heart pounded as she dropped to her knees, bowing deeply. "Your Majesty." The king said nothing at first. The silence stretched, heavy and oppressive, until she finally dared to lift her gaze. "You are Mei," he said at last, his voice deep and smooth like dark wine. "The daughter of Liu Zhixing." "Yes, Your Majesty," she replied, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. "Do you know why you are here?" "To repay my father’s debt." His lips curved into a faint smile, though it held no warmth. "And how do you propose to do that?" Mei hesitated. What could she offer a king? She was neither noble nor wealthy. All she had was herself. "You summoned me here, Your Majesty," she said cautiously. "Surely you already have an answer." The smile widened, and a flicker of something dangerous sparked in his eyes. He rose from the throne and descended the steps toward her, his movements deliberate and predatory. When he stopped before her, Mei could feel the heat of his gaze like fire on her skin. "You are bold," he said, almost amused. "I admire that. But boldness will not save you." Before she could respond, he reached out and lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. The intensity in his eyes made her breath hitch. "You will become my queen," he said simply. The words hung in the air, impossible to comprehend. Mei stared at him, stunned. "Your queen?" she echoed, disbelief lacing her voice. "You heard me," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Your father’s debt is great. Too great to be repaid with money or land. But as my queen, you will fulfill your duty to this kingdom—and to me." The weight of his words crushed her. Marriage? To a man like him? She wanted to scream, to argue, to refuse. But she knew the consequences of defying him. Not just for her, but for her family. "If I refuse?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. His smile vanished, replaced by a cold, steely expression. "You won’t. Because if you do, your family will suffer the consequences." Mei closed her eyes, a single tear slipping down her cheek. She had no choice. "I accept," she said, the words tasting like ash on her tongue. The king released her chin and stepped back, satisfied. "Good. You will begin your training as queen tomorrow. Do not disappoint me." As the guards escorted her to her chambers, Mei’s mind raced. She had entered the palace expecting to be treated as a servant, perhaps even as a pawn. But to be made queen? What was the king’s true motive? That night, as she lay in the lavish bed prepared for her, the weight of her new reality settled over her like a suffocating blanket. She was no longer just Mei, the merchant’s daughter. She was the future queen of a king whose motives she did not understand—a man who both terrified and intrigued her. And though she hated to admit it, a small, treacherous part of her couldn’t forget the way his touch had lingered on her skin, or the way his gaze had burned into her soul. What kind of man had she just bound herself to? As the moonlight filtered through the silk curtains, Mei vowed that she would not break. If she had to face the king’s obsession, she would do so with her head held high. But deep down, she wondered: could she resist the pull of a man who had already claimed her fate—and perhaps her heart?
