Chapter 1
"Wow, look at those beautiful lights!" I exclaimed. I ran and stared at everything around me. They were so beautiful; I couldn't believe I wasn't allowed to see this place. "Princess Diamond, please, let's just go back," Dusk, my fairy guardian, begged. "Can't we just stay and see the lanterns?" I had never seen anything so magical before. Sure, I lived in a castle where fairies lived, but something was enchanting about the outside world. No cages, no rules. "If Queen Leticia finds out we snuck out just to come to this festival, she will kill me." I chuckled and looked at Dusk. She looked beautiful even when she was frowning. We were both wearing black cloaks, concealing our faces. "Mom won't find out. Did you forget she has to attend a meeting?" I asked. "And can you buy me an ice cream? I really want the chocolate one." She sighed. "Alright, but you have to promise me we'll go back to the castle after we eat." I squealed in happiness and hummed. "I promise!" I knew Dusk couldn't resist me. We grew up together. Mom said Dusk was born to be my guardian, which made her like my twin. Wherever I went, she followed. I thanked the universe for that; life would be so boring without her. "Here's your favorite chocolate ice cream, Princess," Dusk handed me the ice cream. "Thank you, Dusk. I know I'm causing you trouble, but thanks for coming with me." There were times I let Dusk get into trouble with me, but she said it was her job to be with me. Sometimes I didn't understand why I had to hide myself. Why couldn't I just be a normal fairy and grant wishes? "I told you, Princess Diamond. Wherever you go, I must follow you," she answered truthfully and quietly, enjoying her ice cream. Sometimes I forget that Dusk was just a teenager like me, a fairy with her own dreams and goals. I felt like I was robbing her of the life she deserved. My thoughts were interrupted when I saw a group of people wearing similar outfits. "Who are they?" I whispered, full of curiosity. "Huh? Who?" I pointed my finger at those people laughing with each other. They looked happy and carefree, but I was more curious about the clothes they were wearing. "Ah, they're students from Vampyr University. Did you see their uniforms? Pretty intimidating, yet sexy." Students? Vampyr University? "Can I go to school too? Can I wear those uniforms?" "Well, uhm… I don't know, Princess. You know your situation and—" "Yeah, can we not talk about it?" I cut her off. I was tired of everyone reminding me of the reasons why I couldn't be normal. Once upon a time, the councils decided that being a hybrid was a crime, a disgusting plague that needed to be stopped and eradicated. And I happened to be a hybrid. My mother, the queen of fairyland, fell in love with my father, a human. Their love resulted in me being half mortal and half immortal. So when my father died, my mother decided to hide me or lock me in the castle where no one could see me. But it didn't stop there. If King Midas had a touch of gold, well, as for me? I have a touch of destruction—anything that I touch dies. Whether it's a plant that withers because of my hands or an animal that will quickly perish upon contact. So yeah, I can't blame my mother when she decided to lock me up and gave me a pair of gloves to conceal my secrets. But sometimes, I wish things were different. I wish people would accept me for who I am or embrace hybrids like me in this mystical world. "I'm sorry about that, Princess Diamond. I didn't mean to remind you of that." I shrugged my shoulders and smiled. "That's fine. Could you tell me about Vampyr University instead?" "Of course! Vampyr University is a prestigious and the only school in the mystical world where creatures like us can refine and enhance our skills. However, not everyone can attend; you must receive an invitation to enter." "T-that sounds intriguing! Can you share more details?" She smiled at me and stood up. "Next time, Princess. Now, it's time to head home, or your mother will realize that you are missing." I pouted. "Fine, but you owe me." I froze and came to a stop when I saw who was standing in front of me. It was my mother. She's currently sending death glares my way. Looking at her, I've realized how much we resemble each other. We share the same mesmerizing white hair that never fails to captivate everyone; her eyes are stern yet captivating. Her beauty is timeless, and her graceful demeanor is evident in the way she carries herself. "M-mom, you're back! I was waiting for you outside. Didn't you see me?" I'm praying to God right now that the tremor in my voice isn't noticeable. "And who do you think you're fooling, young lady?" She coldly states, her gaze shifting towards Dusk. "Tell me, where did you two go?" I silently implore Dusk with my eyes, but who am I kidding? Dusk will always remain loyal to my fairy mother. "The Princess wanted to watch the lantern festival, and I must apologise because it's my fault. I asked her what gift she wanted for her birthday tomorrow, which led us to decide on seeing the festival," she said while bowing her head. That's not entirely true. I pressured her into giving me a birthday gift and manipulated her into going to the festival. Now, guilt is consuming me. "I'm sorry, Mom. I-I overheard the other fairies talking about the lantern festival, so my curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to see it," I whispered, not intending for her to find out. I'm aware that she's already stressed, knowing that her daughter is in danger. "Oh, my lovely daughter. I'm not sure how to handle this. You're so much like your father, brimming with energy and curiosity," she said, embracing me. "Do you know what the meeting is all about? They want to create an army that will focus on hunting all the hybrids, including you, Diamond. They want you to attend Vampyr University."
