CHAPTER ONE: THE UNSEEN WORLD
Emma Williams moved quickly through the crowded dining area of the Blackwood Hotel restaurant, expertly balancing a tray loaded with plates. The place was buzzing with activity tonight, filled with the sound of laughter, the clink of cutlery, and the conversations. The scents of grilled steak and fresh seafood mixed in the air, reminding her of how hungry she was, but there was no time to think about that. She had a job to do, and she had to do it perfectly. She couldn’t afford any mistakes. “Enjoy your meal,” she said with a warm smile as she placed the plates down in front of a table of business people. They barely looked up from their discussion about stock prices and investment strategies, but Emma didn’t mind. She was used to this, being a part of the scene in a world where she didn’t belong. People who dined at this restaurant, dressed in designer suits and dripping with wealth, lived in a different reality from hers. To them, she was invisible, and that was exactly how she wanted it. Emma had been working at the Blackwood Hotel for two years. The job was demanding, and the shifts were long, but the pay was better than most, and the tips were sometimes enough to get by. Ever since her parents died in a car accident when she was twenty, she had been doing whatever it took to provide for her younger brother, Ethan. He was eighteen now and in his last year of high school, and Emma was determined to give him the best chance at a future she had ever had. She worked hard to pay for their small apartment, his school fees, and everything else they needed. After serving another table, she took a quick break on hold, leaning against the wall as she caught her breath. Her best friend and co-worker, Clara, was there too, sipping from her water bottle. Clara was a constant source of support for Emma, and she was always quick to remind her to take care of herself. “You look exhausted, Em,” Clara said, her eyes filled with concern. Emma managed a small smile. “Just another long night, but it’s fine. I need the hours.” Clara sighed. “You need a break, that’s what you need. You’ve been working nonstop.” “I know, but I can’t afford to slow down right now,” Emma replied. “Ethan’s got college applications coming up, and I need to save up as much as I can.” Clara’s expression softened. “I get it, but don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. You can’t do everything alone.” Emma appreciated Clara’s concern, but she was used to carrying the weight of everything on her own. She had to be strong for Ethan, and she had to keep pushing forward, no matter how tired she felt. “I’ll be fine. I just need to make it through tonight.” Clara opened her mouth to respond, but her eyes flickered over Emma’s shoulder. “Uh-oh. The boss is here.” Emma turned and saw Aiden Blackwood enter the restaurant, his presence commanding the attention of everyone around him. He was tall, with broad shoulders and an air of authority that was impossible to ignore. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and he wore an expensive suit that fit him like it was made for him because it probably was. Emma had seen him countless times before, but he always had the same look: serious, focused, and completely unapproachable. Aiden Blackwood was a name that carried weight in the city. He owned the hotel and a vast business empire that goes across industries. He was known for his sharp business mind, ruthless decisions, and cold demeanor. To people like Emma, he was as distant as the stars, a man who belonged to a world she could never enter. Clara nudged Emma playfully. “Think he’d ever notice me if I spilled a drink near his table?” Emma laughed softly, shaking her head. “I think he’d just glare until you disappeared.” Clara grinned. “Probably. But a girl can dream.” Emma tried to focus on her work, but she couldn’t help but glance at Aiden as he walked past. There was something different about him tonight. His jaw was clenched, and he looked more tense than usual, as if something was weighing on his mind. She quickly pulled her gaze away, reminding herself that it was none of her business. Aiden Blackwell’s problems were not hers to worry about. As the night continued, the restaurant grew busier, and Emma had no time to think about anything else. She moved from table to table, her feet aching, but she kept her pace steady. She had a routine, and she knew how to handle the rush. But halfway through her shift, she heard raised voices coming from Aiden’s booth. Her head snapped up, and she saw him in a heated argument with another man. The tension between them was hot, and the man’s expression was just as cold and intense as Aiden’s. Emma’s heart pounded in her chest. She knew the rules includes staying out of the guests’ business but if the situation espand, it could disturb the entire restaurant. Taking a deep breath, she decided to intervene. She walked over, doing her best to keep her expression calm and professional. “Is everything all right here?” she asked, her voice steady even though she felt her hands trembling slightly. The man in the suit turned to her with a sneer. “This doesn’t concern you. Stay out of it.” Emma’s cheeks flushed, but she held her ground. Aiden’s eyes shifted to her, and for a moment, their gazes locked. His eyes were sharp and cold, but there was something else there too, something she couldn’t quite identify. It was as if he was trying to read her, to figure out why she was getting involved. “It’s fine,” Aiden said, his voice low and controlled. “We’re done here.” The other man glared at Aiden before storming off, muttering something under his breath. Emma watched him leave, feeling the tension in the air slowly dissipate. She turned back to Aiden, unsure of what to say. “I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.” Aiden’s expression softened just a fraction. “Thank you. But you didn’t have to step in.” Emma shrugged, managing a small smile. “It’s part of the job. I didn’t want any trouble.” For a moment, Aiden didn’t say anything. He seemed almost intrigued by her, as if he couldn’t quite figure her out. “What’s your name?” “Emma,” she replied, feeling a strange flutter in her chest. “Emma Williams.” “Emma,” he repeated, as if testing the sound of her name. “Thanks, Emma. I appreciate it.” Emma blinked, surprised. She hadn’t expected him to thank her. “No problem. Let me know if you need anything else.” As she walked away, she could feel his eyes on her, and it left her with a strange, unsettled feeling. She pushed it aside and focused on finishing her shift, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the way Aiden had looked at her. She told herself it was nothing. A man like Aiden Blackhood had no reason to think about her beyond this brief encounter. By the time her shift ended, Emma was exhausted. She changed out of her uniform, grabbed her bag, and walked out into the cool night air. The city was alive with lights and noise, but she felt a quiet sense of relief as she made her way home. It was only a short walk to her small apartment, a place she and Ethan had called home for the past few years. When she walked in, she found Ethan sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by textbooks. He looked up, his eyes lighting up when he saw her. “Hey, you’re back. How was work?” “Tiring, as always,” Emma replied, setting her bag down. “But it’s fine. How about you? Studying hard?” Ethan nodded, though there was a hint of worry in his eyes. “Yeah, I’ve got a big test coming up, and college applications are due soon.” Emma forced a smile. “You’re going to do great. Don’t stress too much.” Ethan frowned. “I know you’re working extra shifts because of me. I hate that you have to do that.” Emma walked over and ruffled his hair playfully. “Hey, none of that. We’re a team, remember? I want you to focus on your studies and not worry about anything else.” Ethan’s expression softened. “Thanks, Em. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Emma felt a pang in her chest. She didn’t want him to feel like he was a burden. She was proud of him, and she’d do whatever it took to make sure he had a bright future. “We’ve got each other, and that’s all that matters.” As she got ready for bed, Emma’s mind drifted back to the restaurant and her brief interaction with Aiden. She shook her head, pushing the thought aside. It was just one moment in a long night, and she had more important things to focus on. Tomorrow, she’d go back to work and do it all over again. Aiden Blackwood stared at his phone, the screen lit up with notifications he ignored. He’d built his empire from nothing, turning his father’s failing business into one of the most powerful corporations in the city. But with power came enemies, and tonight, one of them had tried to test his patience. Jack Kingston. Even thinking about the man made Aiden’s jaw tighten. Jack had been a rival for years, constantly trying to undermine him.
