Chapter 1:The Interview That Was Never Meant to Happen
Rain hammered against the towering glass of Wolfe Empire headquarters as Lena Hart stepped through the revolving doors, clutching a folder that contained everything she had left—her résumé, unpaid bills, and a letter threatening eviction if she missed one more payment.
She wasn't here to chase a billionaire.
She wasn't dreaming about love.
She only wanted the payroll department to explain why the company had deposited money into her account... then demanded she return it, leaving her unable to pay her rent.
Security tried to send her away.
A senior manager humiliated an elderly cleaner in front of everyone.
Lena stepped in.
She calmly pointed out that the manager had blamed the cleaner for a mistake caused by the payroll system itself.
The lobby fell silent.
By coincidence—or perhaps fate—Adrian Wolfe walked through the lobby just in time to witness the confrontation.
He expected another loud, emotional scene.
Instead, he watched a soaked young woman dismantle his manager's argument with facts, refusing to flatter anyone despite knowing who stood before her.
She didn't recognize him.
She only knew he was another well-dressed man interrupting her.
When she finally learned he owned the company, she felt a flash of panic.
Great.
You've just argued with the CEO.
There goes your last chance of fixing your salary.
Adrian, however, noticed something different.
She hadn't tried to impress him.
She hadn't begged.
She hadn't lied.
She had defended a stranger while everyone else stayed silent.
For reasons he couldn't explain, he ordered her upstairs.
Not for an interview.
For a conversation.
During that conversation, Lena unintentionally noticed inconsistencies in confidential financial reports left on Adrian's desk.
She wasn't snooping.
She simply recognized numbers because she'd once studied forensic accounting before dropping out of university to care for her sick mother.
Within minutes she pointed out a payroll discrepancy that had quietly cost Wolfe Empire millions over several years.
His finance department had missed it.
His auditors had missed it.
She found it in under five minutes.
For the first time in years...
Adrian Wolfe was impressed.
Not because she challenged him.
But because she was brilliant.
"You should work for me."
She laughed.
"I'm serious."
"I'm not."
"You'd be wasting your talent anywhere else."
"I don't even like you."
"I didn't ask you to."
Silence.
Then—
"I'll triple your current salary."
She almost refused.
Almost.
Until she remembered the eviction notice folded inside her bag.
She hated herself for saying yes.
She had no idea that accepting the offer had just placed her inside a company built on secrets.
Nor did she know that Adrian Wolfe had become the one man she was never supposed to love.
As she left the building, her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number:
You got in.
Good.
Now remember why you're there.
Don't get distracted.
The man who hired you...
is connected to the night your family was destroyed.
