Back to the Shadows

Mrs Riecke was whipping up a late lunch for her kids. She spent the first few hours of her Saturday at her newly obtained permanent job as a sales representative in a company known as 'Russo Designs' - in such short notice she had climbed high up the hierarchy. As funny as it sounded, Mrs Riecke was preferred to other applicants because she identified herself as the mother to Seattle City's widely known hero. After finishing up with preparing the meals, she went to the living room to probably watch some television or catch some shut eye before any of her kids came to wake her up asking for their final meal of the day. Mrs Riecke turned on the television; the channel which was on was dishing out breaking news about the strange disappearance of two prolific members of the fabulous four. For a minute, she believed that her son couldn't have been part of the missing. She couldn't afford to lose her husband and her first son in the space of less than a year - the trauma she would face could make her lose her sanity. She listened closely for the details in order to confirm her thoughts. "We're here live at Coven Road, the home to one of America's most prominent business men - Jack Willows where the team of gallant heroes fought against an unidentified criminal a few minutes ago. Captain Cherry and Troy were here but they exited the scene before the news crew could arrive. The criminal who is female was earlier spotted in Iowa a few days ago and from the footage the CCTV cameras captured, Seattle's Blue Dynamite and one Madonna Willows were swallowed up by a mystical portal" a reporter said, confirming Mrs Riecke's initial doubts. At this point, Cherry, Troy and Maddison walked into the living room to meet Mrs Riecke who was already in tears. Maddison reached out to place a hand on her shoulder but she yelled and shook away her arm. "Don't touch me...where is my son?" Mrs Riecke yelled, turning to face Cherry while making her final statement. "We fought as hard as we could, but the enemy outsmarted us ma'am" Cherry said. "I don't know what you're yapping about, where is my Mason?" Mrs Riecke said, still sobbing heavily. "Calm down ma'am...we did all we could. I understand what it's like to lose a loved one but..." Cherry was saying before her namesake cut her statement. "But what? You don't know what it's like to lose a husband and a son in the space of less than a year, you don't!" said Mrs Riecke. Troy and Maddie were bent on being quiet. "You're mistaken Mrs Riecke, I know what it's like and even worse. I've lost my father and my mother and I have a brother I've never even met" Cherry said looking firmly at Mason's mother without blinking for a single moment. Mrs Riecke now started to feel less sympathetic for her own ordeal when she got to hear the story of Cherry. She then looked up to meet the eyes of her son's bosom friend. "We will get Mason back. I promise you" Cherry said, after which she put her face mask back on. As she walked towards the door to make an exit, her nose caught a nice aroma of finely prepared lasagna. "Is that lasagna I smell?" Cherry said turning back to look at Maddison and Mrs Riecke. "Get out!" Mrs Riecke yelled showing she was in no mood for any of Cherry's pleasantries. Cherry turned and walked out of the apartment and was shortly followed by Troy. Mrs Riecke wasn't the only one who was troubled by the disappearance of Seattle's heroes, Mrs Williams was flooding Cherry, Joanna and Chloe's phones with text messages and missed calls. Perhaps she was actually worried about the fact that she hadn't gotten her groceries yet! Whatever the case may have been, she needed to speak to Madonna to know if she was alright. When Mrs Williams was told about what had happened that day, she hit the roof and started yelling at Cherry on the phone. Cherry felt really bad; she and Troy were ranted at like they were the ones holding Mason and Madonna hostage and soon some news sites and other forms of media began staking a similar claim - that Captain Cherry and Troy were involved in the mysterious portal scandal. Mr Arthur Williams steered a claim to the mysterious disappearance of his daughter. He filed charges against Cherry Davies and Catriona Willows, stating that they were scrupulous kidnappers posing a threat to the peace and well being of the United States of America. Many social media influencers started to support his claims and soon the heroes were declared wanted in their own native land. In it all, there was still a small fraction of people who believed that Cherry and Troy were completely innocent of the charges made against them. The CCTV footage should have served as the telling difference, but several people kept insisting that the duo of Cherry and Troy were in connivance with the evil villain who opened up the portal - they were back to fighting from the shadows yet again. As a result of the recent occurrences, Cherry and Troy went into hiding, living as fugitives for a crime they hadn't even been proven guilty of. The claims staked against them were not going to deter their love for Seattle and the rest of America. They still fought crime and stopped a few villains, but only fled from the scenes when the cops showed up. Cherry and Troy were obviously not going to be allowed into school due to the recent happenings as they watched each other's steps to avoid being caught off guard. They used their supersonic abilities to scramble for meals and soon they figured that the only means of regaining the freedom was to capture Joao and free Mason and Madonna from wherever they were being held as captives. On a warm Friday night, Captain Cherry and Troy flew to the crown of the statue of liberty to rest a bit, seeing there was no safer place to stay without a steer being caused. The city of New York was unusually quiet that evening and neither Cherry nor Troy could fathom why. After the United States Congress had discussed the case of Cherry and Troy's connection with the recent incidents, they were certain that The New York Police Department would be firm on their tales soon enough. After examining the 'damage' they had caused numerous cities in the name of 'rescuing' them, the Congress now insisted that they no longer needed the assistance of the fabulous duo in combating any more anomalies. Cherry's granny and Mr Jack Willows were repeatedly questioned concerning the whereabouts of Cherry and Troy but they sincerely didn't know their locations. On multiple occasions, task forces combed throughout their homes in search of the two fugitives; anyone found concealing them would be considered an accessory to treason. Cherry and Troy were feasting on a stolen meal of burgers and fries at a hide out and neither of them said anything until their eyes met and they knew they couldn't go on without saying a word about what had been going on. "Troy, I wanna let you know that this is all gonna pass. Trust me" Cherry said as Troy kept trying not to let their eyes meet once more. Troy initially refused to utter a word until a few moments later. "I'm tired Cap! I'm tired! Sneaking to take showers and change clothes? Stealing junk food from local restaurants and having to put on hoodies all the time?! I can't take it anymore!" Troy yelled at the top of her voice. "Look Troy, I don't dislike this any less than you do. Alright? You should be happy we're still here. Could you picture a scenario where all four of us were warped into the damn portal! Who'd even think of rescuing us?" Cherry continued. "Well that would be extremely tragic! But the authorities could..." Troy responded before Cherry interrupted. "The authorities could what? Those dudes put up million dollar bounty for anyone who could give 'em our heads. After all we've done for them" Cherry added as Troy's opinion suddenly began to change. "I just wish someone could give us a call telling us how we could solve this puzzle on our hands" Cherry continued. In a few seconds, they both began to hear Maddie's voice over the communication lines, as if the events were planned. "Hello, Captain, Troy? Can you hear me?" Maddison asked; her voice seemed a bit shaky. "Maddison? Is that you?" Troy asked feeling a bit surprised. Maddison hadn't called them or sent any message on the communication lines in quite a long while, in light of the recent incidents. "Yes it's me" Maddison responded vividly. "Why are you whispering?" Cherry said. "Quiet! I don't want my Mom to hear me doing this. Right now there's a robbery going on at 117 Winston Street on Palm Avenue. You have to get there and save Madonna's Dad! He's at g*n point, you need to get there right now!" Maddison said, hurriedly cutting the call supposedly because her mother was fast approaching. Cherry and Troy put on their masks and headed to the address which was a popular place in Seattle. Mr Arthur Williams was returning from a business meeting her had earlier that day. He drove his car through Palm Avenue which was a very lonely site at night. A g**g of robbers holding loaded pistols and dressed in black shady clothing, attacked him and stole a number of his priced possessions. Mr Williams refused to give up the keys to his car. One of the gunmen placed the mouth of the pistol to directly face his left nostril and the poor middle aged statesman began to perspire. He began to pee in his pants as he came face to face with death. "Alright old man! You have one last call, you're going to hand us the keys or...I pull the trigger and the bullet goes straight to your brain and I still get the keys. Fifteen seconds...to make the right choice, or I'm going to kill you and take the keys of your corpse!" The supposed leader of the group stated. As he began to countdown, a green light began to shine bright in the distance. It grew larger and larger until it surfaced on the ground - it was Captain Cherry, here to rescue the individual who orchestrated her exile. All of the other gunmen began to call the attention of their head to the arrival of trouble, but he initially ignored thinking they were messing with him. It was when Cherry finally spoke out that he became convinced. Cherry and Troy had already gone over the attack strategy where the latter would burst out from a different angle. "I'm going to say this once. Drop all your weapons right now" Cherry yelled. "I'm sorry princess. We're not taking orders from a sick a*s punk like you. One more step from you and we blow this guys insides out" the leader responded and Cherry sat down on a nearby pavement on hearing. "You know? I really don't care about this old man. Go ahead, kill him" Cherry uttered, consequently erupting bewilderment in the enemy's camp. As soon as she sighted the elongated lapse in their concentration, she yelled to give Troy the go ahead. "Troy now!" she said and suddenly Troy appeared from behind them with her hands operating as a high evolution anti matter magnet. She drew the guns from all their hands and disintegrated them with the aid of the anti matter. The tides had surely turned now.
