Chapter 31“Call me Hachi.” His voice was more positive as he and Noelani climbed into the Escalade. They remained quiet after that. Noelani took note of the luxurious vehicle, touched things gingerly, opened and closed pockets, thrilled to be a passenger.
As Sara drove through traffic, she glanced back through the rearview mirror at Hachi several times. The transiting expressions on his face showed hope, then desperation and helplessness, disbelief, and back to hope again. He kept glancing at his daughter. Sara knew his thoughts. This man's only concern was for his daughter's welfare and he was facing another possibility that could fall flat.
