Chapter 3

515 Words
This was the man who had once crossed the entire city in the pouring rain just to buy me the cake I was craving, the man who had stayed awake beside my bed all night when I was sick with a fever. And now he could shove me without the slightest hesitation. When had everything changed? Probably around the time he started "helping" the scholarship student, Jade. He was always talking about working overtime, chasing promotions, and doing everything he could to build a better future for us. I had believed every word. I had even felt guilty for doubting him, thinking he was exhausting himself for our family. Turns out all that patience and devotion had gone to another woman. How had I failed to see what kind of man he really was? Pain throbbed through my leg as I slowly pushed myself upright. My voice came out frighteningly calm. "Marcus," I said. "Say it again. Clearly. Who exactly am I, and who is she?" A flicker of panic crossed his face, but it vanished almost instantly. "What, are you deaf?" he snapped. "This is my wife, Vivian Lindstrom. Jade, you are just a coworker." Then he deliberately raised his voice for the crowd around us to hear. "You're bitter because nobody wants to marry you, so now you're harassing a married man out of jealousy. Is that it?" The whispers around us exploded immediately. "So she's just some lonely older woman…" "That's insane. She's actually going after someone else's husband." "She looks mentally unstable." "No wonder nobody wants her." Jade pressed herself tighter against Marcus and shot me a smug little smile. So this was the choice he had made. No matter what happened, he was going to stand by Jade. Did he really think he could bury the truth with a few lies? Facts did not change just because he said they did. "There's one thing I don't understand," I said quietly. I opened my handbag and pulled out my ID. "You claim she's Vivian Lindstrom." I held the card up between us. "Then what exactly does this government-issued ID make me?" The moment Jade saw it, her face changed. She grabbed Marcus's sleeve in panic. Marcus lunged forward and snatched the ID out of my hand before anyone else could see it clearly. Then he threw it straight into the trash. "You're seriously sick in the head," he spat. "You actually made a fake ID just to impersonate my wife?" His voice grew harsher with every word. "Jade, haven't you embarrassed yourself enough already? Following me around like some lunatic wasn't enough, so now you're forging documents too?" He looked at me with naked disgust. "A woman like you should be ashamed of herself. Nobody would ever want you. Even if you threw billions at me, I'd still find you disgusting." His words hit like slaps across my face. The stares from the surrounding crowd grew sharper and colder by the second, pressing down on me from every direction. "Call the police!" "Yeah, arrest her!" "Fake IDs are illegal!" "She's terrifying!"
