The beginning of the end
“Is this love, is this love, is this love, is this love that I’m feeling?” they screamed as they sang along to Bob Marley’s 1978 classic. You could feel the connection between Jane and Tim; they seemed like a match made in heaven… or hell. Tim “Mastermind” Carter, the man he is! At 38, his achievements were commendable. His rise in business and politics was something no one seemed to understand. He came like a thief in the night and took everyone’s position. He played the cards right and was indeed the king of his chess game. But, like other kings, he had others play his dirty games for him. And also like other kings, he had his spot. His world was a carefully crafted empire, built on manipulation, control, and a thirst for power. Jane Wells, the self-acclaimed Marilyn Monroe of our time—well, she wasn’t wrong. Her charisma, body, confidence, and curves were enough to make heads turn 360 degrees. Whenever she walked into any room, you could feel the presence of an angelic being—or demonic, like some said. She was her own queen and seemed to have the biggest control over everything and everyone. No one could deny the hold she had over Tim, though. She was the one who played him like a puppet, even if he didn’t want to admit it. As they drove toward their usual hangout spot in Tim's , Tim couldn’t keep his eyes off Jane. His thoughts wandered, a mix of desire and unease swirling within him. How does she do this to me? he wondered, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. With one hand on the wheel, he used the other to gently caress her legs, moving upward, as if he were guiding her to a place only he could take her. The same way he controlled the masses and his puppets, he thought he was controlling her. But deep down, there was a nagging voice in his mind—a whisper that he was the one being played. She knows too much, he thought. Knows how to use it all against me. Their laughter echoed in the car, but the sound was hollow to Tim. He glanced in the rearview mirror and noticed the same black sedan he’d seen earlier. His heart skipped a beat, but he brushed it off. “Probably just a coincidence,” he muttered under his breath, forcing himself to focus on Jane. They finally reached Silverwood Enclave, one of Tim’s projects. It was a forest on the outskirts of town that Tim had forcefully bought for a development project, but it had become something else entirely. It was their spot—away from prying eyes, a place where they could indulge in their forbidden desires without fear of judgment. The air was thick with anticipation as they stepped out of the car. Tim’s hands found Jane’s body once again, eager to feel her, to claim her in a way only he could. She responded in kind, her lips crashing into his, her hands roaming over his chest, tugging at his clothes. But then Jane froze, her body tensing against his. “Tim,” she whispered, her voice trembling.“What is it?” he asked, his brow furrowing as he followed her gaze. There, in the distance, the faint outline of a figure emerged, partially obscured by the trees. Tim’s pulse quickened. “Stay here,” he said, his voice firm. Jane grabbed his arm. “Don’t go,” she pleaded, her nails digging into his skin. “Relax,” he said, trying to sound reassuring. “Probably just some kid messing around.” But the unease in his chest grew heavier. As he took a step forward, the figure vanished into the shadows. He turned back to Jane, forcing a smile. “See? Nothing to worry about.” But before she could respond, the sound of a gunshot shattered the stillness. Tim’s world slowed. Jane’s body jerked violently, her eyes wide with shock as she collapsed into his arms. “No! No, no, no!” Tim screamed, his voice cracking as he cradled her. Blood seeped through her dress, staining his hands, his clothes, his soul. “Stay with me, Jane,” he begged, his voice breaking. “You’re going to be fine. I’ll get you help.” Her lips moved, but no sound came out. Her eyes locked onto his, filled with pain and something else—regret? Fear? He couldn’t tell. The black sedan roared to life, its headlights cutting through the darkness as it sped away. Tim’s mind raced. I should’ve known. I should’ve seen this coming. He fumbled for his phone, his fingers slick with blood as he dialed for help. “She’s been shot!” he shouted into the receiver. “We’re at Silverwood Enclave. Hurry!”vThe minutes that followed felt like hours. Tim pressed his hands against the wound, trying to stop the bleeding. “Don’t you dare leave me,” he whispered, his voice shaking. “You hear me, Jane? Don’t you dare.” The ambulance arrived, its sirens wailing, a jarring contrast to the earlier serenity. Paramedics swarmed around them, pulling Jane from his arms. Tim stood there, frozen, his hands trembling as he watched them work. The forest, once their sanctuary, was now a scene of chaos—a cacophony of voices, flashing lights, and the metallic scent of blood. He followed the ambulance to the hospital, his thoughts a whirlwind of fear and guilt. Who did this? Why? Hours later, a doctor emerged, his expression grim. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice heavy with finality. “We did everything we could.” Tim’s knees buckled, and he collapsed into a chair. The weight of his grief was suffocating. He stared at his blood-stained hands, his mind replaying the moment over and over. When he finally returned home, the house felt colder, emptier. His children greeted him, but their voices were distant, like echoes in a cavern. He walked past them, heading straight for the bedroom. Opening the door, he froze. Diane stood in the middle of the room, a gun in her trembling hands.“What the hell are you doing, Diane?” Tim demanded, his voice low and dangerous. She didn’t answer, her eyes wide and wild. “I… I didn’t…” she stammered, her breath coming in short gasps. Tim took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. “What have you done?”Diane’s lips parted, but no words came. She dropped the gun and fled the room, leaving Tim standing there, his mind racing. What the hell is going on? he thought, his world unraveling around him.
