It was too late. Aimee and Beth left a trail of muddy footprints into the hall and living room and now on the sofa, as they climbed up next to Connie, vying for her attention. Ruth enveloped Lisa in a tight embrace. “Hi kid,” she mumbled into her ear. Lisa smiled at the use of her nickname, both her sister and her brother referred to her as kid. It started when they were all young, and it had stuck. “Hi,” Lisa was tempted to call Ruth oldie but stifled the temptation. Ruth was quite sensitive about her age and was always checking her hair for signs of grey. Her sister breezed in, and Lisa closed the door firmly after her.
