Graduation Day
Kenzies POV:
I was graduating! Actually graduating! I was so damn excited that I couldn't contain my smile. It didn't matter that my foster mom couldn't make it due to pulling extra shifts at work. Nothing mattered except I did it! I had just turned 18 a week ago and now I was free from having to come back to this hell hole they liked to call public education. Public education my ass. More like torture chamber with all the jocks and preps that had made my life a living nightmare for four years.
"Kenzie!" I groan when I hear Beth or as I like to think of her my own personal walking nightmare call my name. I paste the biggest smile I can muster onto my face as I turn toward her and her posse of mindless drones. "How can I help you on this fine day Beth?" The look on Beths face alone lets me know that she knows I'm being completely fake in my enthusiasm to speak to her.
"There's a after party going on tonight out by the lake! You should totally come hang out!" I automatically get suspicious of the invitation because Beth has never went out of her way to make me feel invited to anything unless she was up to something. When it came to me she was always up to something.
"Nah, I think I'll just hang out around the house tonight. Thanks for the invite though." I mean I at least try to go for the polite refusal. Unfortunately for me Beth is having none of it. "Kenzie, honey tonight is the biggest time of the year for us graduating seniors! You have to come! I'm not taking no for an answer."
I try to hide my groan. I really, really do but as soon as I see Beths eyes narrow the slightest bit I know that I didn't hide it as good as I'd thought. "I'd really rather not tonight. I have this movie that's been calling my name for weeks now and I finally have time to kick back and watch it." I'm lying right through my teeth but she doesn't need to know that. "Really? What's the name of this movie that'll somehow be better than hanging out with friends and tons of hot guys by the lake tonight?" Beth asks.
"Umm.." I go completely blank because I didn't think she'd call me out like this on my lie. Before I can even think of any movie title at all Beth says, "Be ready by nine. I'll pick you up." I go straight into panic mode because this chick is not coming to my house. I don't need my personal tormentor anywhere near my home. Before I can stop myself I reach out and grab onto her arm as she goes to turn around and practically scream, "No! It's okay! I'll just drive myself that way you won't have to leave to take me home just in case I have to leave early!"
Beth is practically beaming because she knows she won this round. "Alright then! We'll see you there!" A few of the girls in her posse shoot me snide looks while giggling like they know something that I don't. Odds are they do and I'm in for a horrendous night all because I couldn't just stand up for myself and tell Beth a firm no.
My mood did a complete 360 degree turn from when I was walking across the stage to get my diploma. I mope all the way out of the schools football field where graduation was held to the parking lot where my old beat up corolla is parked. She's ugly and has been beaten all to hell and back but for five hundred dollars I couldn't exactly say no. She's been a good car to me since I got her my Junior year of high school after working my ass off each day after school at the diner. I unlock my doors and get in thinking about how tonights going to turn out and whats in store for me. I'm kinda hoping that Beth has suddenly had a come to moment and realized what a b***h shes been to me all these years and decided to try to be a better person. I start to snicker as I realize that the world would have to be ending for that to have happened. With a shake of my head I start my car and head towards home.
