CHAPTER ONE — THE UNSEEN GIRL.
The iron gates of Pennysilvia Academy groaned open as Levi stepped through, a cool morning breeze brushing against his face. The familiar stone courtyard stretched before him—arched walkways, tall spires, banners rippling like silent witnesses to his return. Wolves sensed him immediately. A beta’s spine straightened. Two younger wolves lowered their voices. A group of witches paused mid-conversation, glancing his way before pretending they hadn’t. Levi walked on without reaction. He was used to it—the staring, the bowing, the tension that followed him like a shadow. Being the Alpha King’s heir had a weight, one that pressed harder each year he returned to Pennysilvia. Boots clicked behind him. Akira fell into step beside him with a smoothness that made wolves automatically move aside for her. Her long dark hair brushed her shoulders, and her golden eyes held a confidence that didn’t waver. “You’re quiet,” she said. Levi kept his gaze ahead. “Just thinking.” “You’re thinking about the same thing we all are.” Her tone softened, but her meaning didn’t. “Your father expects an announcement this semester.” His jaw tightened. He didn’t answer, which she took as agreement. “You and I have trained for this since childhood,” she continued. “We were raised to lead. Everyone is waiting for you to—” “Akira,” he said quietly, “not here.” Her lips pressed together, but she nodded. Around them, students streamed toward the main hall for the resumption-day assembly—wolves with sharp strides, witches floating lightly, fae with their usual superiority. Pennysilvia was alive again, humming with energy and magic. Yet something felt off. Levi couldn’t name it, but his wolf was restless, prowling beneath his skin. Akira felt it too; she looked at him sideways. “What’s wrong?” He didn’t know. Not yet. By the time they reached the Grand Assembly Hall, the air buzzed with chatter. Students filled the rows of benches, the towering windows flooding the space with pale morning light. Levi sat near the front with the other higher-ranking wolves, Akira beside him. Headmaster Rowan stepped up to the podium, clearing his throat. “Welcome back to Pennysilvia Academy. This year—” The doors creaked open. And the entire hall went silent. A girl stood framed in the doorway. She did not belong here. Her clothes were ordinary—jeans, a soft sweater, a backpack slung over one shoulder. Her hair shifted in the breeze from the hall’s open windows, catching threads of morning light. But her scent— Levi inhaled sharply. Warm. Human. Impossible. His wolf snapped to attention, muscles locking tight. A low growl threatened at the back of his throat, though he didn’t release it. Around him, wolves stiffened. A witch’s hands trembled, a spark of magic flickering uncontrollably. Even the fae looked startled—and they never looked startled. Humans couldn’t see Pennysilvia Academy. Couldn’t enter it. Couldn’t even perceive the barrier that hid it from their world. But this girl was standing right in the center of the hall, blinking in confusion at the rows of silent magical beings staring at her. Akira leaned forward slowly, eyes narrowing. “Levi… do you see what I’m seeing?” He didn’t answer her. Because the girl— this human girl— shifted her weight nervously and stepped inside as if she were simply late to class. A murmur broke across the hall. “Is she glamoured?” “Is she enchanted?” “No—humans don’t smell like that.” “Why can she see us?” Levi didn’t move. Couldn’t move. Her heartbeat echoed faintly—human-quick, human-fragile. Her hands tightened around a folded paper schedule. She scanned the hall, cheeks warming under the scrutiny. When her gaze accidentally met Levi’s— his breath stalled. Something pulled tight in his chest, sharp and instinctive. His wolf lunged forward so suddenly he had to brace his hands against his knees to keep from rising. What was happening to him? The girl quickly looked away, face flushing, unaware she had just set off a ripple of shock through the most dangerous creatures in Pennysilvia. A teacher hurried toward her, whispering urgently, but she only shrugged helplessly and murmured something Levi couldn’t hear. Akira leaned closer. “She’s human,” she said in disbelief. “Completely human.” Levi swallowed hard. “Yes,” he said quietly. “And she shouldn’t be here.” But she was. And his life— he felt it down to the marrow— had just changed.
