Alex’s P.O.V
“Magic?” I asked her incredulously. “As in a witch?”
“No.” Freya shook her head immediately. “This isn’t witch magic…this is different. It’s faint, but it’s definitely some kind of magic.”
“You can tell different kinds of magic?” I frowned. I didn’t even know magic had sub-divisions. Freya’s training must really be paying off. Not to mention she comes from a family of witches that were once a part of their council.
“It’s not something you notice immediately, but all supernatural creatures possess some form of magic, even wolves.” She explained. “For her though, the magic of her wolf is the strongest, but there is an undertone of something else…something that is just as much a part of her as her wolf.”
“A hybrid.” I whispered, looking back at my mate.
“They’re extremely rare, aren’t they?” Freya asked quietly. “I’ve hardly ever seen a wolf pair with that many species. The Moon Goddess doesn’t quite like the idea of mixed blood.”
“It’s not common, yes,” I shrugged, a bit irritated that the healers weren’t here yet to look after my mate. “But that doesn’t mean the Moon Goddess has something against intermixing. Cameron mated a witch, didn’t he? The world is too vast for us to know how many wolves have mates from different species.”
“There’s no doubt there is magic in her veins, but as to what that is…I can’t tell just yet.” Freya shook her head with a sigh.
“Is that why you wanted to see her?” I asked, finding it odd that she would come all this way here just to see a rogue. “I think we have seen enough, Freya. We need to leave now, before she wakes up or before the Alpha or Cameron decide to come back early.”
“I spoke to Cameron right after you returned with her,” she told me a bit guiltily. “From the sounds of it, they want to get back today.”
“Then it’s all the more reason for us to leave.” I held out my hand for her. “Come on, let’s get going.”
Freya was about to place her hand in mine, but stopped short when a low groan sounded from inside the cell. Frowning, both of us turned to look inside the cell together.
I didn’t like the fact that I had to place shackles around my mate’s wrists to stop her from harming herself, but I knew that the second she woke up, she will try to break free. Rogue wolves were creatures of the wild, more animal than human; and they hated confinements. It made their wolf go crazy, slowly but surely. I was hoping to find a solution before she woke up.
Now, I watched her jerk in her sleep, as if she was having a nightmare.
“Let me in, I can read her.”
“No way in f*****g hell!” I snapped at Freya, turning to face her with narrowed eyes. “You’re not going anywhere near her.”
I said it just as much from the perspective of Freya’s safety as I did my mate’s. I didn’t want either of them to hurt and Freya’s magic could have adverse effects, not on a wolf, but as Freya herself mentioned, my mate wasn’t entire wolf either.
“Alex…” Freya spoke calmly, too calm for my liking. “We both know that we can do this the easy way or…”
“Or?” I challenged her, stepping closer so I could be more intimidating.
However, instead of backing away, a small smile formed on her lips and she raised a hand towards the cell. “Aperta.”
The doors opened on their own with a creaking noise. Shrugging with that smug look still intact, Freya walked inside that cell like bursting open locks was a piece of cake for her. “f*****g witches!” I muttered under my breath, following behind her quickly in case she got herself into any more trouble.
“I heard that.” She said quietly, as she sat down in front of the sleeping woman. “Why hasn’t someone helped clean her yet?”
“The fact the she hurt two of our men,” I told her, getting down on my hunches next to her. “What did you mean when you said you could read her?”
“I can tap into her mind, find out what she’s dreaming about.” Freya said now, placing a hand on my mate’s forehead carefully. “I know it’s a breach of privacy and I shouldn’t consciously be doing this…but we need to know why she did what she did, or at least try to find out who she is before the Alpha or Cameron gets back. We’ll need to have something to defend her.”
I realized then what I had missed all this time. Freya was trying to help me. She knew that I was going to get into trouble when the Alpha arrived, or when Cameron showed up. That’s why she needed proof to defend my case.
Placing my hand on her shoulder, I whispered for only her to hear. “Thank you. For staying by my side.” Especially when my own packmates doubted my decisions.
“What are friends for?” She gave me a small smile before turning towards my mate and taking a deep breath, closed her eyes.
Another groan sounded from my mate’s lips, as if she could feel the intrusion, but I stayed put, no matter how much my wolf wanted to protect her. Freya wasn’t an enemy; she was my friend and my future Luna. I trusted her instincts.
For some time, nothing happened. But then my mate gave a sudden jerk and a groan sounded from Freya’s lips. At first, I didn’t know what to think about it, but then the motion happened again and the more time passed, the more agitated my mate became.
Something was wrong…something was definitely happening and both Freya and my mate could feel it. Perspiration beaded Freya’s forehead and she groaned like she was in pain. Whatever it was that she was seeing…it was hurting her too.
Suddenly, my wolf stirred, as if sensing some kind of danger.
I didn’t stop to think. I caught a hold of Freya’s hand and removed it from my mat’s forehead. She opened her eyes with a start and stared at me as if seeing me for the first time.
“Alex…” her voice was a horrified whisper.
Not waiting another second, I caught a hold of her arms and hauled her off the floor and away from my mate, standing in front of her to protect her from whatever was about to happen.
And that was when my eyes locked with blood-red orbs filled with anger and confined screams.
