Chapter 6: From the World of Dreams

Rogue Wolf’s P.O.V “Mom!” I called out as soon as I stepped inside the house. “I’m home!” Only eerie silence greeted me from inside the wide space. I paused, looking around at the open windows and watching the curtains blow back in the warm afternoon wind. The wind chime on one of the windows made a twinkling sound, one that I often found pleasing. But for some reason, that same sound felt ominous today…like the chimes of a knell… “Mom?” I called again. “Dad? Maze?” I called my family one by one, but that eerie silence remained. I found myself rooted to the spot, unable to move, unable to go further inside. Fear gripped my heart in a vice grip, slowly tightening its hold. My father had warned me about this day. The day we might get discovered…the day they might come for us. But I hadn't expected it to be today…I hadn't expected them to ever show up. We hid so well… “M-om? Da-d?” This time when I called out for my parents, my voice trembled with fear. But still there was no answer. Suddenly, a violent wind blew from behind, pushing me further inside the room and then I heard the front door slam shut with a loud bang. The wind chime blew in the wind once more, this time the sound more violent and continuous. ‘They were toying with me.’The thought crossed my mind just as I saw a shadow whoosh past me with incredible speed. Fear slammed in my gut once again and it had me running further inside my house, straight to my parent’s room at the bottom of the stairs. Without thinking twice, I entered the room and slammed the door shut behind me. Squeezing my eyes shut, I fell to the floor with my back against the door. I couldn’t do this! I didn’t know what to do! Where were my parents? My sister? What happened to them? I couldn’t do this! I couldn’t f*****g do this all alone! My heart was beating so fast it was a tattoo against my ribcage. Pressing my hands to my chest, I counted backwards from ten, just like how my mother had taught me. Once I reached zero, I let out a shaky breath and opened my eyes. The room was dark, the curtains pulled shut to let the sunlight out. It was almost five now, so that shouldn’t be the case. My mother loved the sun. She never closed the curtains until the sun went down. She wouldn’t… Rising from the floor slowly, still noticing just how eerily quiet everything was, I walked forward carefully, making sure my pumps didn’t make too much noise. I wanted to open the curtains…to let the light in…but just as I crossed my parent’s bed, my legs tripped over something and I fell face first onto the floor. A pungent scent hit my nostrils then…a scent that I was all too familiar with since I worked as a nurse in the hospital’s maternity ward. And then I felt the liquid spilled all over the floor, when my palm landed on a puddle of it. Blood. It was all over the floor. I didn’t know what to feel anymore as I raised myself into a sitting position with much difficulty. My entire body was trembling like a leaf and my breath came in short pants. But I had to turn, I had to look… It was only after I turned my head that I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my life, as an earth shattering scream tore through my lips. It was my mother’s hand that I had tripped on…a hand that was no longer attached to her body. Because the rest of her body was lying only a few feet away from me, completely naked as her lifeless green eyes stared at me unmoving…and her ribs were cracked open like an eggshell, exposing her internal organs…and the hollow cavity that once contained her heart. * * My eyes snapped open as my wolf came to roaring life. The remnants of the dream fuelling my anger, making it extremely difficult for me to reign in my animalistic instincts. The first thing I saw were green eyes…and my wolf almost took a pause from its blazing anger. My head snapped in their direction, looking out for those green eyes, so close yet so far. It belonged to a man who seemed to be in his twenties and the moment our eyes met, an odd calming effect descended upon me, but only for a split second. Because the moment I turned my eyes anywhere else, my wolf began raging once again. It was like I was consumed by this uncontrollable angerand I couldn’t even remember the source of it. Another movement caught my eye from right behind that man and my eyes zoomed in on the face of a woman with dark hair and pale blue eyes. The man…he seemed to be protecting her, guarding her. And it made my wolf even angrier. “Stop!” The man told me, his voice calm. “Don’t let the anger get to you! Try to find the reason behind it! Reason with your wolf!” Reason with my wolf? I wanted very much to do just that. But how? How could one reason with a wolf that could see nothing but red? Feel nothing but rage? “Fight it!” He spoke again, gentler this time, almost like he was urging me to follow his voice. Who was I to fight? What do I fight it with? Why should I fight it? My mind kept on becoming more and more jumbled up as time went by. Memories…they came so close to my grasp before they were pushed back to the far reaches of my mind. It felt like my mind had become a maze, as soon as I thought that I had reached a breakthrough…it ended up being a dead end. The answers I wanted, the answers I needed badly…they kept mocking me right in the face, so close yet completely out of reach. But what answers were I even looking for? Why? WHY? ‘Tell me!’ I wanted to scream at the man. ‘Tell me what I should do? Help me!’ But no words came out…only a growl that sounded fierce and threatening. But I wrenched it back with all my might. I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t even know if my wolf would even listen to be, but instead of begging it to stop, I growled back at it angrily. ‘NO!’ I commanded, as fiercely as I could, using all the strength I could muster. ‘STAY BACK!’ My eyes lost focus for one second, the red hue clearing just for the tiniest amount of time before returning with a vengeance. I shook my head, trying to clear them of my ugly thoughts. Thoughts that kept urging me to rip this man apart. To rip the woman to bits and feast on her blood. But now that I knew that I could have some control over my body, I tried my best to hold onto it with bloodied hands, my will power stretched to the furthest limits… just to stay sane a little while longer. And that was when I saw the woman reach out to touch the man’s shoulder. “Alex…” she spoke in a low voice…almost like a lover’s whisper. And I completely lost control. My wolf pounced to the forefront of my mind, taking over my body as another growl left my mouth and I jumped forward, only to he hauled back by something tied to my arms. I looked behind me wildly, trying to find the source of my restraints. They were metal cuffs that were attached to the wall, holding me back, but I didn’t care. Especially when I saw the man taking a step in front of the woman to protect her. How dare he! This time, when I pounced, I aimed at the man rather than the woman…they were within reach…so close… Another shot sounded inside the room. And just like the first time…everything went blank in an instant and darkness consumed my word.
