Chapter 2

Wren's POV The light of the cameras welcomed them like a tempest as they made their way back into the ballroom. Wren forced a grin for the cameras as she posed next to Adrian, feeling as though the entire world rested on her shoulders. She felt, deep down, like a puppet on a string, manipulated by other people's expectations. "Wren, smile!" With an exuberant tone, Lila called from the sidelines. "You're going to become famous!" When Wren saw the contented look on Lila's face, her smile wavered momentarily. Was Lila interested in what was best for her? Or did she seem to be enjoying the mayhem of it all? Adrian said, low enough for only her to hear, "Just breathe." "You're doing fantastic." Wren said, "Thank you," her heart pounding. "I just hope my own feet don't trip me up." "You won't," he reassured her, exuding assurance. "Just keep your head up and pay attention to me." Wren found herself engulfed in a flurry of talks, giggles, and flashing photos as the evening went on. Adrian stuck by her side, helping her navigate the mayhem despite the immense pressure. Even if it was just temporary, she felt a sense of belonging for the first time. "Wren, may I borrow you for a little while?" Lila cut in, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. "I need to discuss something important with you." "Yes," Wren answered, staring over at Adrian. "I'll return immediately." Wren couldn't get rid of the uneasy sensation she was having, so she followed Lila to a more peaceful area of the ballroom. With her arms crossed, she questioned, "What's going on, Lila?" With her voice scarcely audible above a whisper, Lila leaned in closer. I merely wanted to remind you to deal cards correctly. Because Adrian is a strong man, you must maintain his happiness. "I am aware of that," Wren answered, her annoyance evident. "However, I aspire to be more than a trophy wife." With a sneer on her lips, Lila lifted an eyebrow. Oh Wren, don't be so innocent. This is a commercial agreement. To acquire what you desire, you must employ your charm and cunning. Wren, feeling a mixture of uncertainty and rage, shook her head. "I want to be treated with respect, not just as a decorative item." Lila sharply said, "Respect is earned, not given." Just keep in mind who you are interacting with. It is not wise to undervalue Adrian. Wren felt a shiver go down her spine as Lila left. Her sister's words carried a heavyweight, serving as a constant reminder of how vulnerable her situation was. She felt the shadows of manipulation beginning to creep in, even though she had come into this arrangement looking for love and companionship. Wren turned back to Adrian and faked a smile, but her heart was pounding with doubt. "Is everything alright?" he said, his brow creased with worry. With an attempt to dismiss it, Wren answered, "Just a little sisterly advice." "There is nothing I can't do." "Well," he replied, returning to the assured tone she had noticed earlier in his speech. "Come on, let's enjoy the evening." Wren felt as if she was standing on a precipice as they posed for additional pictures and spoke with guests. Even though the evening was meant to be a celebration, it felt more like the start of a storm. Wren was standing on the balcony again as midnight approached, the crisp night air enveloping her like a reassuring hug. She was filled with both hope and dread as she looked out at the city lights. Adrian joined her on the balcony and said, "Wren." Are you alright? She answered, her voice hardly audible above a whisper, "Just thinking." "Just about everything." He leaned on the railing beside her and said, "Me too." "This is a significant step for us both." "Are you so sure we can pull this off?" Wren turned to look at him and questioned. With calm blue eyes, Adrian answered, "I think we can." However, it will require work from both of us. Heart pounding, Wren nodded. "I would like to think that." His solemn tone was broken by a slight smile as he offered, "Then let's take it one step at a time." "Dinner is tomorrow only the two of us. Wren nodded, beginning to sense a glimmer of hope. "One movement at a time." Wren had an odd feeling of calmness as they stood together on the balcony. This pact might, just might, result in something greater than she could have ever dreamed of. However, a persistent uncertainty gnawed at the back of her mind, warning her that the journey ahead would be anything but simple. Wren inhaled deeply, prepared to take on any challenges as the stars shone overhead. Even though it would require navigating the dangerous rivers of love and betrayal, she was determined to get her life back. Wren's voyage is introduced in this chapter, which also heightens the suspense and stakes of her predicament.
