CHAPTER ONE: The Agreement
Wren's POV Crestview was bathed in a golden glow as the sun sank low over the seaside community. Wren Lucas adjusted the collar of her magnificent navy-blue dress as she stood at the edge of the large ballroom, her heart pounding. Wren felt like an outsider looking in, even though the room was filled with laughing and the sound of clinking glasses. This was not just another corporate gala; this was the night that would permanently alter her life. "Wren, you look amazing!" Her adopted sister Lila stood at her side and exclaimed. Lila looked stunning in a crimson gown that accentuated her features, her long hair falling down her back. She exuded confidence, charisma, and an easy charm that Wren lacked. With a forced smile, Wren said, "Thanks, Lila." "I just hope this dress doesn't trip me up." With a bright chuckle, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. "You're going to be alright. Just keep in mind that this is your chance to make an impression. Adrian is looking at you to steal the show. When Adrian Cross was brought up, Wren's stomach turned. Despite his brutal business methods and icy personality, the billionaire exuded an irresistible charm. Behind his tough exterior, she had caught little glimpses of warmth, but those were fleeting. She shuddered at the prospect of being his wife. The ballroom doors opened at eight o'clock, and visitors started to arrive, their laughter and conversation filling the air. As Wren glanced across the room and saw Adrian, her heart began to speed. He was wearing a perfectly fitted suit that highlighted his broad shoulders, and he appeared tall and formidable. His dark hair was slicked back, and she felt both excited and afraid as his intense blue eyes peered about the room. Lila nudged Wren forward and said, "Showtime." Proceed. He's holding out for you. As she walked up to Adrian, Wren inhaled deeply and her hands began to perspire. It seemed strange like she was approaching her executioner instead of her fiancé at that time. He turned to face her as she got closer, and for an instant, the outside world vanished. "Wren," he uttered, his tone silky and soft. "You look stunning tonight." With her heart racing, she managed to reply, "Thank you." The weight of his stare delighted and horrified her at the same time. His demeanor was unreadable as he asked, "Are you ready for this?" Wren stumbled, her anxieties taking over. "I—I think so," she said. Adrian nodded, a glimmer of something crossing his features, maybe concern. Wren, we can work things out. I swear. A ruckus broke out at the ballroom entrance before she could reply. With their cameras flashing like lightning, Wren turned to see a group of reporters pressing through the crowd. As everyone's focus went on the drama developing, the atmosphere changed. Adrian! Adrian! Could you remark on the reports that have been spreading about your business dealings? A reporter shoved a microphone in his face and yelled. Wren watched Adrian's visage stiffen, and her heart fell. Being a guy accustomed to dominance, the unexpected interference startled him. "Not now," he stated sharply in a low, authoritative voice. With a mischievous sparkle in her eyes, Lila drew in closer to Wren. It appears that you will soon have to deal with the press. Never forget that people enjoy a good narrative. Wren tried to chuckle, but she couldn't shake her nervousness. She had always wanted to live in the background, so she felt a crushing strain as her life was about to be thrown into the spotlight. Adrian took Wren by the arm and guided her away from the throng, saying in a low voice, "Let's get away from this." The sound of laughter receded as they went into a more sedate section of the ballroom. "Are you alright?" he said, his expression filled with worry. "You appear tense." Wren said, "I'm fine," but her tone deceived her. "There's just a lot to process," Adrian's blue eyes scanned hers as he watched her for a time. "With me, you don't have to act pretend. I am aware that this is not the life you had in mind for yourself. His comments caused Wren's heart to accelerate. Was he that concerned? Or was he just keeping up the appearance of the ideal couple? "Thank you," she said quietly. However, I want to see this through. I genuinely do. With a faint smile teasing the edges of his lips, he nodded. Alright. Wren, because I'm depending on you. We'll work together as a team. Lila reappeared before Wren could reply, her expression a mixture of mischief and eagerness. "You two are there! The big reveal is almost here, and everyone is eager for the party to begin. Wren felt sick to her stomach at the idea. Their engagement was meant to be a major celebration, but instead, it seemed like a shackle. She looked at Adrian, who didn't appear to be phased by the approaching lights. Taking Wren's hand in his, he said, "Let's do this." She felt a jolt from the warmth of his grip, but she pushed the sensation away fast. This was not a romantic relationship, but a commercial one. The lights went down and the crowd subsided as they made their way back to the ballroom's center. As Adrian took a step forward and held everyone's attention, Wren's heart raced. "Ladies and gentlemen," he said in a steady, commanding voice. We appreciate your presence tonight, everyone. I must make a very significant announcement. Wren stood next to him, her heart racing through her body. She struggled to maintain her calm since she could feel the pressure of the situation bearing down on her. "I am thrilled to announce my engagement to Wren Lucas tonight," Adrian said, fixing his eyes on hers. "Together, we will usher in a new phase of success and innovation for our company." Around them, cheers broke out, but Wren thought the world had stopped. The applause and clinking glasses subsided as she came to terms with the truth of her circumstances. She was under a contract that felt more like a prison than a partnership, and she was engaged to a man she hardly knew. From the crowd, Lila smiled at her, her face triumphant. Though a flurry of emotions raced inside, Wren forced a grin. This was not the cool, calculating arrangement she had dreamed of; this was passion and romance. Wren noticed the reporters taking pictures as the clapping went on, their cameras glimmering like stars in the night sky. Under the weight of their attention, she felt exposed, defenseless, and trapped. How did she end up in this situation? The celebration went on after the news, but Wren didn't feel like she was part of it. In search of comfort in the crisp night air, she meandered over to the balcony. In sharp contrast to the pandemonium within the ballroom, the city lights twinkled below. A deep voice shouted out to her from behind, "Wren." She looked around and saw Adrian walking toward her, his countenance solemn. "How are you doing?" As she leaned against the railing, Wren answered, "I just needed a moment." "It all feels a little overwhelming." Adrian took a step forward, his eyes softening. "I comprehend. This is a significant shift for us both. But I can assure you that we will work it out together. Gazing up at him, Wren tried to find genuineness in his gaze. "Are you serious about that? Or is that simply a part of the arrangement? His brow furrowed as he paused. "I want this to be more than just a commercial relationship, even if I am aware of it. Wren, I want us to be partners. I want you to be at ease in my presence. "Satisfied?" Wren said again, a hint of doubt in her voice. "Given that I hardly know you, how can I feel at ease?" Adrian said, "Then let's change that," with a trace of resolve in his voice. Come, let's get to know one another. What about tomorrow evening for dinner? Only the two of us. Wren felt her heart quicken at the idea. "Eat dinner? Only the two of us? "Yes," he answered sincerely. "No distractions, no business. Only the two of us. She considered her alternatives and hesitated. "All right, but I won't guarantee anything." "Attractive enough," he remarked, his stern expression cracking into a smile. "I'll accept what I'm given." Wren experienced a glimmer of hope as they stood side by side on the balcony. This setup might be the start of something bigger. Perhaps Adrian wasn't the terrifying creature she had thought him to be. But while she entertained the idea, a persistent doubt surfaced. What if all of this was a front? "Wren!" Momentarily, Lila's voice called from within. "Return now! They wish to capture the joyful couple on camera! Wren turned back to the ballroom and sighed. "Perhaps we ought to leave." Adrian remarked, his demeanor returning to that of the assured businessman she was accustomed to. "Let's put on a show." Just take my lead, please.
