Wren's POV
The following day came with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I felt like I was standing in front of my mirror for the hundredth time, fiddling with the collar of my blouse. I was now engaged to Adrian Cross, and we were going to have dinner tonight. Thoughts of it made me feel butterflies in my stomach; I couldn't help but notice a feeling of impending doom.
"Are you ready yet, Wren?" With a hint of frustration in her voice, Lila called from the living room. "You don't want to hold him up!"
"I'm nearly finished!" I yelled back, taking one more, critical look at my mirror. Finding the ideal mix between being friendly and professional was challenging for me.
"Remember, this is your opportunity to make an impression on him," Lila said in a supportive yet strong tone. "You have to prove to him that you're not just a pretty face."
"I know, I know," I answered, attempting to control my jitters. "My only goal is to leave a positive impression."
"You will," she gave me her word. Simply be who you are. He must see you as you truly are.
I went from my room into the living area and took a deep breath. Lila had on her evening attire, a scarlet outfit that flawlessly accentuated her body. She appeared as though she had just come from a magazine.
"Whoa, you look amazing," I remarked while attempting to hide my fears.
"Many thanks! But tonight is all about you," she answered, eagerness glimmering in her eyes. "Remember that self-assurance is crucial."
Right, I replied, trying to smile. "Assurance."
Indeed! Now, before you meet him, let's go over a few things," Lila said, adopting a coach's tone. "What topic are you going to discuss?"
"I'm not sure," I said, biting my lip. Could it work? We both work in the same industry, after all.
"Excellent beginning! But remember to find out about his interests as well," she suggested. "Identify points of agreement. It's important to him that you're more than just a secretary.
"All right, I can handle that," I remarked, beginning to relax a little. "What happens if I run out of stuff to say?"
Then simply pose inquiries to him! Individuals enjoy discussing themselves," she replied, dismissively waving her hand. "Just have fun and be lighthearted."
"Light and enjoyable," I said again, nodding. "I got it."
Lila looked at her timepiece. "All right, it's time to part ways. You wish to avoid being late!
"Exactly!" I cried out as I grabbed my handbag and moved to open the door. "Leave!"
Excited and nervous at the same time, I stepped outside into the crisp evening air. Lila talked nonstop on the drive to the restaurant about her wedding arrangements and the newest rumors circulating the office. I nodded in agreement, but my thoughts were elsewhere, on the task at hand.
I was astounded by the sophisticated restaurant's sophistication when we got there. The cozy setting with the quiet music, dim lighting, and luxurious furnishings made my heart race. "This place is gorgeous," I exclaimed as I took everything in.
Adrian only chooses the best, Lila smirked in response. "You're in capable hands."
"All right," I replied, attempting to calm myself down. "Hopefully, I don't make a fool of myself."
She reassured me again, "Just be yourself," and put a comforting touch on my shoulder. "You're going to be alright."
I saw Adrian sitting at a corner table in the restaurant as soon as we walked in. He was dressed sharply in a suit. His dark hair was groomed to perfection, and his sharp blue eyes darted about the room before settling on me. His expression brightened, and my heart skipped a beat.
My stomach turning over, I muttered to Lila, "There he is."
"Go on, don't hold him up!" She prodded, nudging me in the direction of the table.
I took a big breath and murmured, "Okay, here goes nothing," as I walked up to Adrian.
I approached the table, and he stood up and exclaimed, "Wren!" "You look amazing."
I said, feeling my cheeks heat, "Thank you." "You also look fantastic."
"Will you kindly take a seat?" he asked, pointing to the chair across from him. I sat down, trying not to show that butterflies in my stomach were there.
I looked over the menu and replied, "I hope you didn't wait too long." "I became entangled with Lila."
"Not at all," he answered, grinning broadly. "I was just taking in the atmosphere. There's a positive vibe here.
"I concur," I responded while glancing around. "It's stunning."
As soon as the server came over, we placed our drink orders. I returned my focus to Adrian as he departed. "How was your day?" I ask.
He leaned back in his chair and added, "It was busy, as usual." Calls, meetings, the usual mayhem. However, I was excited about tonight.
"Really?" Sincerely shocked, I inquired. "You were anticipating our dinner together?"
"Obviously," he said, maintaining a steady gaze. "Wren, I'd like to know you better. You are now my partner rather than merely my fiancée.
"Partner," I repeated as a feeling of warmth washed over me. "It's nicely put in that way."
He spoke earnestly, "Let's make this a partnership that works." "What hobbies do you have apart from work?"
I hesitated, mulling about my answer. I mean, I like to read and go trekking. I enjoy being outside, especially by the sea.
"Seems like we share something," he remarked, his eyes brightening. "I also enjoy hiking a lot. Nothing helps you decompress like a good trail.
"Just that!" I cried out, sensing a bond beginning to grow. "Experiencing nature brings a sense of renewal."
The talk went well, and I couldn't help but laugh at his anecdotes about working in corporate America and the absurd things that happen in meetings. He shook his head and remarked, "You wouldn't believe the lengths some people go to just to get ahead."
"Really? similar to what? Intrigued, I asked.
Adrian joked, "Once, to celebrate a project milestone, a colleague brought in a cake, but it turned out he had baked it himself just to impress the boss." "He was not even skilled in baking! The cake did not turn out well.
I chuckled as I imagined the scenario. That's very funny! Was he in trouble at all?
Not really, though. He smiled and said, "The boss appreciated the effort, but it was a running joke for weeks." "Those kinds of moments are what keep things interesting."
I could feel my nerves settling as we talked more. Adrian captivated me with his charm and engaging nature, drawing me in a way I hadn't anticipated. "How about you, Wren?" he leaned forward to inquire. How embarrassing of a situation have you had at work?
I paused, remembering my first experiences working as Adrian's secretary. I laughed as I recalled the day when I accidentally spilled coffee all over my desk before a significant meeting. "I was so agitated that I nearly toppled the projector too!"
With a sparkle in his eyes, Adrian laughed. It seems like something I would take up. During a presentation, I accidentally spilled water on a client's lap. What a pain in the ass!
"Have you recovered?" With real curiosity, I asked.
He shook his head, saying, "Barely." "I tried to lighten the mood by making jokes for the remainder of the meeting." Although it was a catastrophe, we subsequently laughed about it.
"I believe that's the secret," I grinned. "Having the ability to laugh at oneself."
"That's right," he replied, his face softening. "Everything in life is too fleeting to be taken seriously."
At that moment, the server reappeared bearing our dishes, and we broke off our chat to begin eating. I stole glances at Adrian while I savored every piece of the delicious cuisine. I couldn't help but feel at ease in his company since he appeared at ease.
I said, using a tissue to wipe my mouth, "This is delicious." "You chose a fantastic location."
"I'm happy you enjoy it," he said, sipping his wine. "I wanted this to be a memorable night."
"It is," I replied, feeling my heart race once more. "I appreciate you inviting me,"
I noticed a bond forming between us as we were finishing our meals. What comes next for us, then? I enquired as my curiosity overcame me.
Adrian reclined on his chair, his face contemplative. Of course, we still have the wedding to arrange. However, I also want us to spend some time getting to know one another well.
"That's correct," I nodded. "That's what I want too."
Good, he remarked, maintaining a steady glance. "Wren, I think we can pull this off. We simply must have honest communication.
With a sense of resolve, I answered, "I agree." "I want to tell you the truth about everything."
He leaned closer and said, "Same here." "Let's commit to being open and honest with one another. Nothing to hide.
I reached across the table and said, "Deal." A spark of electricity surged through me as soon as he took it.
As the night went on, Adrian and I became more comfortable. We laughed, talked about our favorite movies, and exchanged anecdotes. "I find it unbelievable that you dislike romantic comedies!" I gasped, trying to look shocked.
"They're simply too foreseeable," he expressed, swatting his head. "Thrillers are my favorite genre."
"Thrillers?" Raising an eyebrow, I said. "What a tough guy you are!"
"Hey, I got layers," he grinned in response. "Romance is something I can enjoy, but not in my movies."
"Attainable enough," I chuckled. Which thriller is your fave, then?
"Se7en, for sure," he murmured, his eyes brightening. "There's so much suspense."
Intrigued, I said, "I'll have to watch it." "Perhaps we could have a movie night at some point?"
In a genuine tone, he said, "I'd like that." "Let's get it done."
I didn't expect to feel so warm and connected as the waiter cleared our dishes after our lunch was complete. Perhaps, after all, this collaboration might result in something worthwhile.
"Are you set for dessert?" Glancing at the dessert menu, Adrian questioned.
"Unquestionably!" With renewed excitement, I replied. "What suggestions do you have?"
"The chocolate lava cake, without a doubt," he smiled. "Death-worthy."
"Then I will have that!" I remarked, becoming a little excited.
I had the unshakeable impression that this supper marked the start of something wonderful while we waited for our dessert. Though I had misgivings going into this agreement, I was beginning to feel hopeful. It's possible that Adrian Cross was more than simply a vicious millionaire.
I stopped to enjoy the moment when the waiter brought out our dessert. "I express my gratitude for this evening," I added, meeting Adrian's gaze. "It has significant meaning."
"Anytime, Wren," he answered, his face becoming more sympathetic. "I'm happy we got this opportunity to talk."
I could feel the barriers I had put up around my heart starting to come down with every second that went by. Maybe this was the beginning of something special, a friendship that might develop into something more. I couldn't help but smile at the possibilities as we finished our dessert.
