The psychological thriller novel 'The End of an Era' originated as a short graphic story. Years passed, a global pandemic hit, people retreated, loneliness set in, etc. As someone who struggles with existential crises, I decided to finally revisit this fiction work that I wrote during my college years as a communication major. Since my life had recently become unbearable, revisiting a work waiting to be recognized might have reignited my interest in writing this book. Recently, I rewatched 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,' a film adaptation based on James Thurber's short story. It was directed by Ben Stiller, who also portrayed the protagonist. Anyway, here's a quote from the movie that hit home for me; you'll need to watch the film to figure out what it is. Furthermore, I learned that there is more to be told from the protagonist's POV. In particular, Annie.
Annie is a local Manila girl who is far from conventional. It is too challenging for her to manage her emotions. How long can she tolerate it? The chaos of living with internal issues will end in a twisted catastrophe. How will the story end?
Synopsis: Annie always thought she had her emotions under control, strong enough to handle anything life throws her way. But lately, it seemed like she was on a roller-coaster ride, with her feelings taking over in an unexpected ways.
She struggled to control her anger, frustration, and deep-seated fears. Every day was a battle to keep her emotions from boiling over and causing a catastrophe in her life. It was like she couldn't escape the turmoil inside her, no matter how much she tried. She tried to bury herself in work, hobbies, anything that distracted her from the emotions that threatened to consume her. However, it was exhausting. The constant push and pull between her internal struggles and the outside world left her feeling drained and overwhelmed.
Annie knew she needed help, but admitting that was scary. It meant facing her demons head-on and dealing with the fallout. She didn't know if she was ready for that kind of vulnerability. But something had to be given. The roller coaster couldn't go on forever. So, with a deep breath and a shaky resolve, Annie needed to face reality. It wasn't easy, but slowly, she built a toolkit for managing her emotions. She learned to recognize her triggers, give herself grace and space when needed, and lean on her support system. However, she knew deep down that the feeling of having anything under control wouldn't last anymore, as her triggering memory seeps through her skin, reminding her of her real self. It was a time-consuming process, but one that she was willing to undergo if it meant finally accepting there is no peace amidst the turmoil and pain she inflicted on people around her. And as she journeyed along the emotional journey, she realized that the most critical thing she could do was to accept her reality and the consequences that await her.
