Chapter Thirty-FourToday’s the day. The Dinner-at-Daisy’s Day. I’d tried to worm out of it, I really did, pretending I still didn’t feel well, but Mum insisted that I really couldn’t miss another day of school. ‘Mum says do you want to eat anything in particular later?’ Daisy asked as soon as I stepped out of the house. My heart sank; I was hoping she’d forgotten. ‘Well, I don’t know if my mum wants me to eat at home tonight,’ I said carefully. ‘You eat there every night,’ Daisy cried. ‘One night at mine. Mum’s making a real effort. She’s getting pudding and everything.’ ‘I can’t stay too long,’ I tried again. Daisy shrugged. ‘That’s okay. It’ll be nice for you to come for a little.’ There it was.
