Chapter 3 - Mattew is back
- Fiona.
Mary froze. There weren’t a lot of people in her new life who still call her by that name. Actually no one had called her that since she met Milly. She had made a lot of effort to become Mary. She refused to go back.
- Fiona…
- Mary.
She turned.
- My name is Mary.
- What? Anyway, I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Really, did you have to come to this…
- What are you doing here Matthew? She interrupted.
He clenched his jaw. Yes, he had always hated it when someone interrupted him, but he made it a sport to never let her talk. Ever. How blind can a girl be?
- Do you really have to be so unclass? Couldn’t you at least leave a contact, saving me from having to look everywhere for you? And where is this godforsaken place?
She turned, opened her door, entered and slammed it on his face when he went to enter.
-FIONA!
She reopened the door.
- My name is MARY. You and I are divorced and done for. I don’t have to listen to your rambling again, you may use your loving mistress for that.
She then slammed the door again.
She listened for a moment, fearing and hoping he would call that name again or even knock at the door. He did none, coward.
She went to drink a glass of water in the kitchen. Opening the cupboard, she saw the bottle of scotch sitting there. It was what Mattew liked most. He was always saying “big people drink scotch”, so he wouldn’t drink anything else. Douche!
She served herself a full glass of scotch and gulped it in one go. Without surprise, her head immediately started to throb, and her vision blurred, great. He was back for less than an hour and already messing with her life. She took a shower and went to bed hoping to have forgotten everything by tomorrow.
It was 10 o’clock. She was late, she hadn’t heard her alarm, her head was killing her, she was going to be sick and, of course, she still remembered who she encountered yesterday at her door. Rhaaaa why drink alcohol when she can’t handle it?
She rolled on her bed, took an advil first, went to use the toilets, sent a message to Milly telling her she would be late, then went back to bed.
After thirty minutes, she was feeling slightly better, so she took a shower and prepared to go to the restaurant.
- He didn’t! Milly shouted.
It was 7 PM, and they were preparing for the evening service at 7.30 PM. Mary had come to the restaurant late and it was already crowded. She had jumped into the melee. Then they had to tidy and prepare for the evening, and they now had the time to talk. Mary had just told Milly why what Mattew had told her a day earlier.
- He surely did! Reproaching me for leaving without contact. I mean, really? Did he expect me to stay in touch after he cheated on me?
- What did he want anyway?
- how would I know? I slammed the door on his fake, cheating face.
- so proud of you!
Yes, Mary was feeling proud of herself too. Two months, even one month ago, she would have cried herself out. Luckily, Milly had had enough of her crying every time she saw or heard someone being call Matt and signed her on a course for self-love and self-improvement. That’s where she met professor HENRY. Changing her name was the first step to change herself. You couldn’t do things differently if you remain the same person inside and outside, right? So she changed her name from Fiona to Mary. Mary was her nanny’s name. She was kind, courageous and loving, everything she wanted to be.
- I hope he doesn’t come back.
Milly looked thoughtful for a moment.
- I don’t know. The Matt I know is pretty focused when he wants something. Anyway, just keep your guard up and call me if you need anything. She said.
Mary hoped she wouldn’t need that help but now, looking at Mattew leaning against her door at 1 AM, she knew she had been wrong.
- You better have a superb excuse. She said.
He stood up, unfolding his 5’11 tall and put his hands in his pockets. Yes, he was handsome. Short blond hair, square jaw, blue eyes, fit, a blond Henry Cavill, her favorite superman.
- Shouldn’t you apologize first? Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you?
Annnnd he just had to open his mouth. She wanted to slam her door in his face again, but he stood in front of her apartment. Smart boy.
- We need to talk. He said when he saw that she was ignoring his demand.
She still didn’t answer.
- Fiona, …
- Mary. She corrected
- This is ridiculous.
- I didn’t invite you, feel free to vanish.
She pushed him to the side and he moved. She looked at him surprisingly. She knew he had move by himself. She didn’t have enough strength to move him.
- what is wrong with you?
- Grandpa want to see you.
She turned toward him. There were one or two things she liked about their marriage and grandpa was one of them. He had always loved her. She met him the first time when he went to see her nanny. Nanny and he had grown up together and were quite friend. He had once told her that she knew him better than himself and was a wise sounding board for his decisions. He once implied that he owned his best billion-dollar deal, to her. When she asked him why he didn’t ask her to marry him, he said he missed the right time.
- Fio… I mean, Mary. He missed you, you know he always loved you. It was very selfish of you to go like that without saying goodbye.
- You know if you stop talking no one will think that you are mute.
He clenched his jaw again. It was refreshing to put him in his place.
- Grandpa’s birthday is next Sunday, in 3 days. There will be a celebration party at home. Grandpa specifically told me to come with you or to stay away.
- Really?
- You may feel that I wronged you…
- You did. I interrupted.
He clenched his jaw.
- Well, grandpa loved you. He is old and his health isn’t that good.
She wanted to say no but he was right. Even though he had hurt her, grandpa was innocent and had only ever shown kindness to her. But she was still going to make him work for it.
- So?
- So? He repeated
- I am pretty sure grandpa told you to ask kindly. I am waiting.
- Fi…
- You better remember my name right, or I am slamming my door in your face. Again.
He clenched his fist.
- Mary…
- Yes? I interrupted.
- Come with me to grandpa’s birthday.
- Hummm You can do better than that.
His face turned red with anger.
- Mary…
- Yes? I cut again
- Will you come with me to my grandpa’s birthday, please?
She stared at him. She really wanted to make him beg more but couldn’t handle seeing his face every day.
- All right. See you there.
She went through her apartment door and closed it without giving him time to respond.
Milly was right. Mattew was the kind of man that pursued his goal until he achieved it. That was why he first marry her, and today he was ready to beg her to go to grandpa’s birthday. She couldn’t help but think that she had just embarked on a journey she couldn’t handle.
