CHAPTER 1 - THE DIVORCE
Chapter 1 Matt was going to be delighted. Surely he was going to forgive whatever he was reproaching her. They hadn’t really talked in a month, maybe more, but he was busy and she was too. But today was their wedding anniversary, and she had quit her job. At last. He had been pestering her since the first day of their marriage. He didn’t want her to work. He could take care of her, but she wouldn’t listen. Fiona smiled. Now she had quit everything for him, it wasn’t worth it, and she wanted to start anew with her husband. She went to buy the cake but was hold by traffic. Now she was late. She quickly went into the elevator and pressed the 14th floor. She didn’t like to live so high up. She felt dizzy and airsick every time she looked at the window, but Matt liked it like that. Well, marriage was all about concession, wasn’t it? The elevator opened, she entered the corridor. Their apartment was the last one to the right in the corridor. She went to open the door, but it wasn’t locked. Did she forget to lock it? Was Matt already home? Lights were out, but she could see something in the living room. - Petals? That was weird. There were a lot of rose petals on the floor, real one. There were candles on the dining table too, two glasses and a bottle of red wine. Oh my! Matt was back, and he wanted to surprise her with a romantic couple's dinner. Her eyes were filled with tears. Yes, he still loved her. She went looking to the bedroom and stopped. The door was slightly open. She looked inside and felt her strength leave her. Her husband was there, but not alone. - baby! stop teasing! - What do you want me to do if you are too sexy? - Fiona will soon be here - Stop talking about her when we are together. Why do you always mention her? He seemed exasperated. - She is your wife - But you are the one I love. Samantha, please, you are the love of my life. I can’t live without you. Samantha? - Samantha? She whispered despite her. They turned and our eyes clashed. Matt, her husband in their bed, with Samantha, her best friend Samantha and apparently his mistress too. What was going on? - What are you… She looked at Matt, then Samantha, dumbfounded. - Samy, I don’t understand. Why are you here? She asked. Samantha just pulled the bed cover tighter around her. - Fi! I don’t know what to say. This wasn’t how I wanted to tell you that. Sam whispered, almost crying. Why was she crying? No, why was she the one crying? - Is there a way to tell someone that you are her husband’s mistress? - Enough! Fiona, you are stressing her out. Matt cut. - I am? Me? Now Samantha was just crying out loud. Sobbing and seeking comfort on Matt's chest. Someone else’s husband's chest. In front of his wife. - Samy. You said I was like your sister. How could… - I said enough. Fiona, wait outside please. Matt interrupted, again. She opened her mouth but found nothing to say. She turned on her feet, which, wonder of wonder, were still working, and went into the open kitchen. She poured herself a glass of water and drank. Was she still alive? Did she really see what she thought she had seen? Was she pulling another nighter at work, forgot and slept on her desk? Was she having a nightmare? This can’t be true. This wasn’t true. Matt loved her. She turned when she heard him entering the room. - Matt, what is the meaning of this? - Fiona. It can’t work between us. Let’s get a divorce. Her ears started to ring. - WHAT? A divorce? You want a divorce? - Stop screaming. I am not deaf. Why do you always have to scream when things aren’t going your way? - I don’t think it is the right moment to start lecturing me here. Let me remind you that you are the one cheating. - I didn’t cheat - Then what do you call that? She screamed, pointing toward the bedroom. - OK, I see there is no point in reasoning with you. Just sign the documents. - Documents? What documents? He pointed to the dining table and, sure enough, sitting there was a stack of paper with “agreement on divorce” marked on top. Her legs gave way, and she sank on the floor. - You are really going to divorce me. Why? - Oh please. I have loved Samantha since the first day I saw her. I thought I could forget her and live with you, but I can’t stop thinking about her, comparing you two and seeing you falling short. - You saw her for the first time during our engagement. Why keep going and marrying me? He looked at her for a moment, then delivered the last blow. - I have never been in love. I didn’t recognize it before it was too late. She started to laugh. This was really funny. - We have been married for 3 years and since day one you were already cheating. - I never love… - You never say so! She interrupted. You lived with me every day for 3 years, never saying anything, never talking. Making me think I was the problem. Because I thought I knew you, because I thought of you as such a righteous man I never doubted, never imagined. Samantha came to stand next to Matt, taking his hand in hers. Fiona laughed again without humor. - Such a beautiful love! - Please Fi, just sign the paper. Matt really respected and appreciated you. You know that. He is rich and powerful enough to have married whomever he wanted, but he chose you. Was she kidding? Fiona asked herself. Whatever, she needed to go out of here to lick and heal her wound. Three years for this douche. Three wasted years. He said he loved her but never show. He said he wanted her but would only kiss her in the dark. He said she was a good cook but was never there to eat her food. He said he appreciates her ambition but wanted her to quit her job. - This is my fault. You are all so intelligent. I am the only one who wasn’t thinking, planning, seeing. It’s on me. She stood, went to the stack of paper and signed for divorce.
