CHAPTER10 Samantha

1056 Words
There were a few things Mary regretted in her previous life. Things she would have done differently if the choice had been given to her. Going on diet again and again to fit the perfect woman’s image, believing her ex-husband lies about loving her, refusing to acknowledge her allergy to roses because it was just so romantic to receive some. But, above all, what she regretted the most was befriending Samantha. Her parents and Samantha’s were neighbors, so they had practically grown up together. She was a beautiful and cute girl then. Now she was a stunning woman. She was 5,3 tall, blond with straight hair which fall to her waist, deer-like gray eyes and a slim body befitting her supermodel image. Stunning ans scheming. Or had she always been like that? Mary sometimes thought about their childhood. It was full of child mischief, but she was always the one taking the blow. Every time they were caught, Samantha would cry and hide behind her since she was taller. At that time, she thought she was just shy and easily scared. Mind you! That was cleverness and "cunningness" for sure. A weed, from start to end. So, no, she wasn’t pleased when the weed joint her into the toilet and closed the door behind her. Effectively blocking any escape. - Good to see you again, Fiona. She was doing it on purpose, of course. Mary refused to take the bait. - I see you met Mattew’s brother. I didn’t know you were that… close. Mary noticed the hesitation before her last word. Wait, was she implying what she thought she was? Surely not. - I seem to remember that Matteo has just come back from abroad. - Oh you are so well-informed. Yep! She was implying that. - I may have gone to the same school as you, but I have difficulty comprehending you. - Do you? - What do you want to tell me? - Matteo isn’t seriously interested in you. I mean look at what you are wearing. He thinks you are a doll. Something to play with, then cast away. Mary sighted and turned to the mirror to fix her hair. She really needed time to calm down. Samantha had always known what to say to kill someone. Must be an essential talent in her job? Who knows? - Fi, I am telling you this for your own good. I can't just sit there when my best friend is being used in a battle she isn’t aware of. She said, looking concerned. Mary still didn’t answer. Samantha sighted. - All right, I will call you Mary. Really, this is just… She didn’t finish her sentence, making Mary feel uncomfortable. That was surely the goal. Cunning snake! - So Mary, I can help you. She added when she didn’t receive the expected reaction. - By doing what? A glimmer appeared in Samantha's eyes. - To get out of this mess, of course. Matteo had always hated his brother, using all means to hurt him. - We are divorced. I am hardly a mean to hurt my ex-husband. - but you were married, and he still cares about you. - Really! Because I seem to remember signing for divorce after catching you two in our bedroom, naked. If that is called caring about me, I am curious to know how he “doesn’t care” about me. Samantha pursed her lips and averted her eyes to the right. Even if she didn’t know shame, she could feel uncomfortable. Great. - Mary, don’t let the past cloud your judgment. I understand you are using Matteo to get back to his brother but… - Wait a minute. When did I say I was doing that? - Isn’t it obvious? - No. It is not. - Well you are here with a man that doesn’t appreciate you, wearing these kinds of clothes to try to attract Mattew’s attention. She was baffled. - His your head just for decoration? Do you always just blurt out everything that comes to mind? - I am not the one crying in the toilets, am I? - When was I crying? Samantha just lifted her shoulders, which meant she had told someone Mary was there crying. That was why she really closed the door, to give the illusion that she was comforting her crying friend after this one failed to attract her ex-husband's attention. No, it was worse. Mattew did make a scene after noticing them, she did attract his attention. The unfaithful ex-wife playing a double game. This was the kind of story Samantha loved. She could say whatever she wanted to whoever was listening and they would easily believe her. After all, she was the best friend, always there for her, like right now when she was supposedly crying. - It won’t work. Mary said. - We will see. She replied, looking at her nails. - Matteo doesn’t care about Mattew, and he is the only person I need to convince. I am not like you, a beautiful celebrity model. I don’t need an audience. I just need the most powerful man in the room to believe me. And that’s the case. Samantha no longer appeared so certain. - you are lying. - We will see. Why don’t you open the door so that we will know who is right and who is wrong? She pushed samantha to the side and went out. Back to the room where everyone was, she couldn’t help but notice their side glances. Samantha had really done a good job. They were all looking at her with disgust, pity, anger, even commiseration. Whatever, she was going to find Matteo now and force him to bring her back to her apartment. Her phone rang then. She picked up while walking to the door. - Hello mama! How are you? - Hello my girl, don’t panic, OK? She stopped walking. - what’s going on? - It’s Papa, we had to take him to the hospital. - What?! She said, starting to walk faster toward the exit. - Don’t worry, it isn’t a big deal. - I am on my way. - You don’t have to hurry, you can come tomorrow. - I am coming now mama. See you. She hung up then call a taxi. Completely forgetting Matteo.
