chapter 1 The Night My Mate Destroyed Me
The night my mate rejected me, the moon turned red.
I should have known that something terrible was coming.
But I was eighteen, standing in the center of Blackthorn Pack's grand hall, wearing a white dress my mother had sewn before she died. For the first time in my life, I dared to believe that perhaps the Moon Goddess had not forgotten me after all.
Every girl in our pack dreamed of finding her fated mate. Some found theirs at sixteen. Others waited until eighteen, when their wolves fully awakened.
I had waited my entire life.
Unlike the other girls, I had never felt a wolf stirring inside me. No strange dreams. No heightened senses. No mysterious voice whispering in my mind.
Nothing.
The pack called me wolfless.
Some called me cursed.
My name was Elena Rose, and I had learned to survive by pretending their words did not hurt.
Tonight, however, everything was supposed to change.
The hall glittered with crystal chandeliers. Silver decorations covered the walls, and the scent of roasted meat, wine, and expensive perfume filled the air. Hundreds of pack members had gathered for the annual Moon Blessing ceremony.
At the far end of the hall stood Alpha Dominic Blackthorn.
He was twenty-five, tall, broad-shouldered, and painfully handsome. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and his golden eyes carried the confidence of a man who had never been told no.
He was the Alpha of Blackthorn Pack.
And according to the whispers spreading through the crowd, he was about to announce his chosen mate.
My heart pounded as the ceremony began.
The pack priestess stepped forward, holding a silver bowl filled with moonwater.
Tonight, the Moon Goddess will reveal the bonds written in the stars, she announced. Those who are destined to stand together shall recognize one another.
I clasped my hands to stop them from trembling.
Please, I prayed silently. Just once, let me belong somewhere.
The priestess lifted her face toward the open skylight.
The moonlight fell across the hall.
Then something happened.
A strange warmth spread through my chest.
I gasped.
For the first time in eighteen years, I smelled something beyond the familiar scents of the crowd. Pine forests after rain. Smoke rising from ancient fires. And beneath everything else, a deep, intoxicating scent that seemed to pull at something buried inside my soul.
My knees weakened.
A voice stirred somewhere deep within me.
Mine.
I froze.
It was not a thought.
It was a voice.
Before I could understand what was happening, Dominic's head snapped toward me.
His golden eyes widened.
For one brief second, I saw something in his expression that looked almost like wonder.
Then his face hardened.
The priestess smiled.
Alpha Dominic, she said, the Moon Goddess has revealed your fated mate.
The entire hall fell silent.
Dominic descended the steps of the platform.
Each footstep brought him closer to me.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I could barely breathe as he stopped directly in front of me.
His scent surrounded me, warm cedar and winter air.
Mate, something inside me whispered.
I stared at him in disbelief.
Dominic looked into my eyes.
Then he turned toward the gathered pack members.
I, Dominic Blackthorn, Alpha of Blackthorn Pack, reject Elena Rose as my fated mate.
For a moment, I did not understand the words.
They seemed to hang in the air, meaningless and distant.
Then the bond snapped.
Pain exploded through my chest.
I stumbled backward, clutching my heart as if someone had driven a blade between my ribs. A strangled cry escaped my throat.
The crowd erupted.
Laughter spread through the hall.
Someone called me a cursed girl.
Another person whispered that even the Moon Goddess had finally admitted I was worthless.
I dropped to my knees.
The pain was unbearable, but it was nothing compared to the look on Dominic's face.
There was no regret.
No sorrow.
Only cold disgust.
Why? I forced out.
My voice sounded small, broken, and unfamiliar.
Dominic looked down at me.
Because I refuse to tie my future to a woman who cannot even shift into a wolf.
His words struck harder than the rejection itself.
I had spent years defending him whenever people spoke badly about him. I had admired him from a distance, convincing myself that if fate ever chose me for him, he would see something in me worth loving.
I had been a fool.
I pushed myself to my feet, fighting the tears burning behind my eyes.
You could have told me privately, I whispered.
He leaned closer.
And let you believe you were worthy of standing beside me? No, Elena. The entire pack deserves to know that I will not weaken my bloodline for a wolfless girl.
A woman standing behind him laughed.
Seraphina Vale.
Beautiful, wealthy, and the daughter of a powerful Alpha family, she had always treated me as if I were something unpleasant beneath her shoes.
She slipped her hand around Dominic's arm.
You should be grateful he rejected you before the mating bond became permanent, she said sweetly. Imagine how embarrassing it would have been for our future Alpha Queen to have no wolf.
Dominic did not correct her.
He did not even look at me again.
Something inside my chest broke.
I turned toward the exit, desperate to escape before the crowd witnessed my tears.
But before I could take another step, every candle in the hall went out.
A violent gust of wind swept through the room.
The crystal chandeliers swung overhead.
Then came the sound of horns.
Three deep blasts echoed from outside the packhouse.
The laughter died instantly.
The elders exchanged terrified looks.
The pack guards rushed toward the doors.
What is happening? someone whispered.
The doors swung open.
Every person in the hall dropped to one knee.
Every person except me.
A man entered wearing a long black coat embroidered with silver wolves. His dark hair was neatly swept back, and his face carried the cold, devastating beauty of someone who had watched kingdoms rise and fall.
His eyes were silver.
Not gold like an Alpha's.
Silver like moonlight shining over a grave.
King Lucian Nightshade.
Ruler of the seven territories. The most powerful werewolf alive. A king whose name alone could silence an entire pack.
He ignored everyone.
His gaze moved across the hall until it found me.
The moment our eyes met, he stopped walking.
For the first time, the expression of absolute control disappeared from his face.
He looked at me as though he had seen a ghost.
Then he crossed the hall.
Dominic immediately stepped forward and bowed his head.
Your Majesty, this is an unexpected honor.
Lucian did not acknowledge him.
He stopped in front of me, staring at my face with an intensity that made my skin tingle.
His hand lifted, trembling slightly, before he stopped himself from touching my cheek.
Impossible, he whispered.
I swallowed.
Do I know you?
Something dark and ancient flickered behind his eyes.
Not in this life, he answered.
A shiver ran down my spine.
Before I could ask what he meant, a sharp pain tore through my wrist. I cried out as a silver symbol appeared beneath my skin, glowing brighter with every beat of my heart.
The windows shattered.
A howl rose from somewhere beneath the earth.
It was not the howl of an ordinary wolf.
It sounded older than the mountains, older than the moon itself.
The entire hall shook.
Lucian dropped to one knee before me.
The king had knelt to no Alpha in centuries.
Yet now his head bowed, and his voice carried through the terrified silence.
My queen, he said. I have finally found you.
Dominic stared at him in disbelief.
Your Majesty, she is wolfless. She has no standing, no bloodline, and no power.
Lucian slowly turned his silver eyes toward him.
You rejected her?
Dominic stiffened.
I did what was necessary for my pack.
The king rose.
Then you have committed the greatest mistake of your life.
He turned back to me and extended his hand.
Come with me, Elena Rose. The seven territories are about to learn who you truly are.
I stared at his outstretched hand.
Somehow, I knew that taking it would change everything.
But before I could move, the voice inside me returned.
This time, it was no whisper.
It was a command.
Wake up.
My body went rigid.
A powerful force erupted from within me, sending everyone crashing to the floor. The silver mark spread across my wrist, forming a symbol I had seen only once before, in the faded journal my mother had hidden beneath her bed.
The symbol of the Original Wolf.
Lucian's face drained of color.
No, he breathed. Not yet.
The floor beneath my feet cracked.
A second heartbeat thundered inside my chest, followed by a flash of memories that did not belong to the girl I had been.
A burning kingdom.
A blood-red moon.
A man holding me as I died.
And a little girl crying for her mother.
I screamed as the memories vanished.
Lucian caught me before I fell.
His arms tightened around me, and for one terrifying moment, his expression was not that of a king meeting his queen.
It was the expression of a man who had found someone he had lost long ago.
Someone he had never expected to see again.
His lips brushed my ear.
Forgive me, Elena.
My blood turned cold.
For what? I whispered.
He closed his eyes.
Before he could answer, the ancient voice inside me spoke again.
The man holding you is the man who killed you
