CHAPTER 7: THE FRAME

1002 Words
Silver Moon Pack did not sleep that night. Not because of fear. Because of anticipation. Something was coming. And every wolf in the territory could feel it in their bones, even if they could not name it. --- NOVA The explosion happened just before midnight. Not loud enough to shake the estate. But precise enough to be intentional. Nova felt it before she heard it. A shift in air pressure. A break in rhythm. Then— Smoke. From the eastern corridor. Her eyes opened instantly. She was already moving before the second sound followed: shouting. “Fire in the lower armory!” “Seal the corridor!” “Move the supplies—now!” Nova stepped out of her quarters calmly. Too calmly. Because she already understood something simple. This was not an accident. This was design. And she was the center of it. --- KADE Kade arrived at the armory within minutes. The fire was contained, but not before damage had been done. Burned storage racks. Destroyed weapon crates. And worst of all— Missing silver-blade inventory logs. Intentional. His jaw tightened immediately. “Report,” he ordered. A guard stepped forward. “Alpha, the fire started inside the storage wing. No external breach detected.” Kade’s eyes narrowed. “No breach?” “No, Alpha.” That made no sense. Unless— His gaze shifted instinctively. And landed on her. Nova stood at the edge of the corridor. Watching. Not reacting. Not panicking. Just observing. Kade’s wolf stirred sharply. Too sharply. That pull again. Stronger now in chaos. He hated that timing. Hated it more than anything. Because it made thinking difficult. And Kade Sinclair never lost clarity. Never. --- NOVA She felt it immediately. The shift. The accusation before it was spoken. The way the guards subtly adjusted their stance. The way silence turned toward her. Predictable. Nova exhaled slowly. So this is the move. She didn’t move from her position. Didn’t defend herself. Because defending implied weakness. And weakness was what they were trying to assign her. Kade stepped forward. The air tightened instantly. “Explain,” he said. One word. But heavy enough to silence the entire corridor. Nova tilted her head slightly. “Explain what?” she asked calmly. His eyes darkened. “The fire started in a secured armory wing,” he said. “No forced entry. No external scent trail. No witnesses.” A pause. Then colder: “And you were the first outsider allowed full access to this estate in years.” Silence hit like a blade. Nova blinked once. Then slowly smiled. Not warm. Not amused. Controlled. “So,” she said quietly, “I’m your conclusion.” Kade didn’t respond immediately. That silence was enough. --- KADE He should not be thinking this way. He knew that. But the pattern was too clean. Too perfect. And Kade trusted patterns more than people. Always had. Still— Something in him resisted the conclusion forming. Not logic. Not authority. Something deeper. His wolf shifted beneath his skin again. Agitated. Focused on her. Always her. Kade stepped closer. The pull between them flickered instantly. Sharp. Unstable. He paused for half a second. Then forced it down. “You were near the armory before the fire,” he said. Nova didn’t deny it. “I passed it,” she said. “Why?” “Because I live in your estate,” she replied evenly. “Corridors tend to connect.” A faint ripple passed through the nearby guards. Kade noticed. Nova noticed too. Good. Let them watch. Let them doubt. Kade’s gaze sharpened. “This was not a random attack,” he said. “It was precise.” Nova nodded slightly. “Yes.” That answer made him pause. She didn’t deny precision. She didn’t deny involvement. She simply agreed with the structure. Kade’s jaw tightened. “You’re not even defending yourself,” he said quietly. Nova met his gaze fully. “Because I don’t need to,” she replied. Silence. The air between them compressed again. That pull surged briefly— Stronger than before. Kade’s breath tightened for a fraction of a second before he controlled it. But the guards saw it. Just barely. Nova saw it too. Of course she did. --- KADE A warrior stepped forward cautiously. “Alpha… should we detain her for questioning?” The question hung too long. Too loud. Kade didn’t answer immediately. And that hesitation— That was the first crack. Nova noticed it instantly. Their eyes met again. Something unspoken passed between them. Not trust. Not hostility. Something far more dangerous. Uncertainty. Kade’s voice finally came. “No.” A pause. Then colder: “Not yet.” Nova’s expression didn’t change. But something in her eyes sharpened. So that’s the game now. --- NOVA She turned away first. Deliberately. Controlled exit. Power statement. As she walked down the corridor, she could feel it. Eyes on her. Whispers forming behind her. But beneath all of it— That pull again. Stronger now. Not fading anymore. Growing. Nova stopped once she was out of immediate sight. Her fingers curled slightly at her side. This is becoming unstable. Not the pack. Not the situation. The bond. Her wolf stirred quietly. Not afraid. Not calm either. Aware. He is resisting it, the wolf murmured. Nova’s eyes darkened. “So am I.” But even as she said it— She felt it again. That faint connection. Still there. Still alive. And somewhere deep in the estate— Kade felt it too. --- KADE Alone in the armory aftermath, Kade stood still. The fire had been extinguished. The damage remained. But he wasn’t looking at it. His attention was elsewhere. That sensation again. Faint. Then gone. Then faint again. Like something knocking from the inside of reality itself. His wolf was no longer pacing. It was listening. Kade exhaled slowly. “This is not possible,” he said under his breath. But for the first time— He wasn’t fully sure.
