CHAPTER 8: WATCHERS IN THE WALLS

979 Words
By morning, Silver Moon Pack had changed its rules. Not officially. But in practice. And in packs like this, practice mattered more than law. --- NOVA Nova noticed it immediately. The moment she stepped out of her quarters, the corridor felt different. Not physically. Structurally. Two guards instead of one at the far end. A healer stationed near the stairwell. A messenger who lingered too long when she passed. Watching. Always watching. Nova exhaled quietly. So it begins. Surveillance. Not arrest. Not confrontation. Control disguised as caution. She continued walking anyway. Because restriction only worked on people who acknowledged it. --- KADE Kade didn’t sleep again. He stood in the strategy chamber, reviewing reports that made less sense the longer he stared at them. The armory fire. The patrol disappearances. The Eastern Ridge instability. And Nova Blackwood at the center of all of it. Not as proof. But as proximity. Too many events orbiting one person. That was not coincidence. That was structure. A pattern designed by intention. His wolf stirred faintly. Not agitated now. Focused. Too focused on her. Kade closed the file sharply. “Bring her in,” he ordered. A guard hesitated. “Alpha?” “Not to the cells,” Kade said coldly. “To the council chamber. Quietly.” The guard bowed and left. Kade remained still. Then, quietly to himself: “If you’re a distraction… I will remove you.” But even as he said it— Something inside him didn’t agree. --- NOVA They came for her at midday. Not aggressively. Professionally. “Luna Nova Blackwood,” the guard said carefully. “Alpha requests your presence in the council chamber.” Nova turned slightly. “Requests,” she repeated. A pause. The guard didn’t correct her. That was answer enough. Nova nodded once. “Lead the way.” She didn’t resist. Didn’t question. Because resistance implied surprise. And she was no longer surprised by Silver Moon Pack. --- KADE When she entered the council chamber, Kade was already waiting. No elders. No witnesses. That alone told her everything. Private containment. Not public accusation. Strategic isolation. Nova stepped inside and stopped a few meters away from him. Silence stretched immediately. Kade studied her. Carefully. Not like before. More… internally. Like he was comparing her to something only he could see. Nova tilted her head slightly. “This feels personal,” she said calmly. “It isn’t,” Kade replied immediately. Too fast. Too controlled. Nova’s lips curved faintly. “That sounded like a lie you’ve told yourself often.” Kade’s jaw tightened slightly. The pull between them flickered again. Instant. Stronger in enclosed space. Both of them felt it. Neither acknowledged it. Kade stepped forward. “You are being monitored,” he said. Nova didn’t react. “I noticed.” A pause. His eyes narrowed slightly. “You are not concerned.” “I am never concerned about things I can see,” she replied. Silence. That answer irritated him more than defiance would have. Because it implied certainty. And certainty was something Kade valued more than anything. Until recently. --- NOVA She watched him carefully now. Something was different. Not in the pack. In him. His focus kept slipping—not outwardly, but internally. Like something was pulling attention away from his own authority. That shouldn’t happen to an Alpha. Unless— Nova’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You’ve been feeling it too,” she said. Kade didn’t respond immediately. That hesitation again. Then quietly: “Define ‘it’.” Nova studied him. Then stepped slightly closer. The air between them tightened instantly. The pull surged. Stronger. Immediate. Kade’s breath slowed for a fraction of a second before he controlled it. But Nova saw it. Of course she did. “The reaction,” she said simply. “The interruptions. The instability.” A pause. “Something between us is reacting to external pressure.” Kade’s gaze sharpened. “There is no ‘between us’,” he said. Nova tilted her head slightly. “Then explain why your wolf keeps responding to me.” Silence. Heavy. Direct. Kade didn’t answer. Because there was no clean answer. And he hated that more than anything. --- KADE For the first time, he considered something dangerous. Not her guilt. Not her presence. But the possibility that the rejection… had not fully severed what it was supposed to. That thought should have been dismissed instantly. Instead, it lingered. And that was worse. Kade stepped back slightly, regaining control. “This conversation ends here,” he said. Nova didn’t move. “It doesn’t,” she replied calmly. His eyes narrowed. Nova continued. “Because whatever is happening is not stabilizing,” she said. “It’s escalating.” A pause. Then quieter: “And neither of us is controlling it.” Silence stretched again. The pull flickered. But this time— It didn’t disappear immediately. It lingered. Just long enough for both of them to feel it fully. Kade’s jaw tightened. Nova’s expression remained steady. But her fingers curled slightly at her side. Unseen reaction. Controlled response. Then— It vanished. Leaving silence that felt heavier than before. --- NOVA She turned slightly. Not away from him. Just repositioning. A power shift. “I assume this monitoring is your solution,” she said. Kade didn’t respond. Nova continued. “It won’t work.” His gaze sharpened. “And why is that?” Nova looked at him fully. “Because whatever is between us,” she said calmly, “doesn’t care who is watching.” Silence. Then she added: “And neither do I.” She turned and walked toward the exit. No rush. No hesitation. Control intact. But as she left— Behind her, Kade stood completely still. For the first time since her return— He didn’t immediately have an answer. And that unsettled him more than any attack.
