CHAPTER 4: THE FIRST BREACH

986 Words
By the third day, Silver Moon Pack had begun to feel it. Not fear. Not yet. Something worse. Instability. It started in small ways — missed patrol reports, delayed border signals, arguments between guards who normally never questioned orders. But in an Alpha’s territory, small things were never just small things. They were symptoms. And Alpha Kade Sinclair could feel every one of them. --- KADE The meeting room was already tense before he entered. He could tell from the silence. Silence meant people were thinking too much. And thinking too much meant doubt. Kade stepped inside, and immediately every head turned. Three elders. Two commanders. One scout captain. All waiting. All unsettled. Elder Maeron spoke first. “Alpha… we have a situation.” Kade didn’t sit. “Report.” The scout captain stepped forward. “Eastern Ridge patrol didn’t return last night.” That made Kade pause. Not because patrols disappearing was new. But because of where. Eastern Ridge. Nova’s demand territory. His jaw tightened slightly. “Send a retrieval unit.” “We already did,” the captain said. A pause. Then quieter: “They didn’t return either.” Silence dropped into the room like a weight. Kade’s wolf stirred immediately. Alert. Sharp. Controlled. “How many?” he asked. “Seven wolves total.” Kade exhaled slowly through his nose. Not panic. Assessment. Always assessment. But something about it felt… wrong. Because Eastern Ridge had been quiet for months. Too quiet. And now Nova arrives— And suddenly everything begins collapsing in that exact direction. Coincidence was a word for people who refused to see patterns. Kade turned slightly. “Any signs of rogues?” The captain hesitated. “That’s the issue, Alpha… there are no signs of a fight. No scent trail. No blood markers. Nothing.” That made the room shift. Even the elders stiffened. Kade’s expression darkened. “No struggle?” he repeated. “No, Alpha.” His wolf pressed forward beneath his skin. Not aggression. Recognition of something incomplete. Kade didn’t like that feeling. At all. --- NOVA Across the territory, Nova stood at the edge of Eastern Ridge. Wind moved through the trees like it belonged to her now. Not Silver Moon. Not fully. Something in between. Behind her, two Northern Black scouts waited silently. They didn’t ask questions. They didn’t need to. Nova crouched near the ground, brushing her fingers over disturbed soil. Fresh. Not from today. From last night. A faint scent lingered in the air. Silver Moon wolves. Exactly as expected. Her expression didn’t change. “Six moved through here,” she said calmly. One of the scouts nodded. “Tracked and contained?” Nova stood slowly. “Contained,” she repeated. A pause. Then softer: “No survivors.” The scout didn’t react. Neither did she. Because this wasn’t emotional work. It was positioning. Every missing patrol, every erased boundary—was not chaos. It was pressure. Applied carefully. Controlled precisely. Nova turned her head slightly toward the forest. Somewhere deep in her chest, that sensation stirred again. The pull. Stronger here. Closer to origin. She ignored it. “Report to the Northern Alpha,” she said. “Tell him Silver Moon’s outer defenses are weakening faster than predicted.” The scout bowed slightly. “And Kade Sinclair?” Nova’s eyes narrowed faintly. A pause. Then: “He will come to the wrong conclusions on his own.” --- KADE By midday, Kade had already rejected three theories. Rogue infiltration. Internal betrayal. Border weakness. None of them fit cleanly. And Kade hated anything that didn’t fit. He stood alone again in the war chamber, staring at the map of Silver Moon territory. His finger traced Eastern Ridge. Every loss. Every disappearance. All centered there. And Nova’s presence. That name again. It kept returning. Unwanted. Uninvited. Unrelenting. Kade pressed his hand against the table. His wolf stirred. Not restless this time. Focused. Kade exhaled slowly. “Tell me,” he muttered to himself, “what are you doing?” But the map didn’t answer. And neither did the memory of her eyes. Still calm. Still unbroken. Still— Wrong. --- NOVA That evening, Nova returned to the estate. She moved through the halls like she belonged there and didn’t at the same time. That was the point. Belonging was leverage. Uncertainty was power. As she walked, she sensed it again. That pull. Stronger than before. It tightened slightly in her chest when she passed the main corridor. She stopped. Slowly turned her head. At the end of the hallway— Kade. Standing still. Watching her. Not moving. Not speaking. Just looking. For a moment, neither of them said anything. The air between them felt… compressed. Like something unseen was bending it inward. Kade’s eyes narrowed slightly. He felt it too. Nova could tell. That faint shift in his expression. Recognition without explanation. His wolf reacted before he did. A subtle tightening in his stance. Nova tilted her head slightly. “Problems?” she asked calmly. Kade didn’t answer immediately. Because something in him was trying to connect dots he didn’t have permission to see yet. Finally: “Where were you last night?” Nova didn’t blink. “Working.” “Where?” A pause. Then a faint smile touched her lips. “Far enough from your problems.” That answer should have irritated him. It did. But not in the way it used to. Something else layered beneath it. Something that didn’t belong. Kade took a slow step forward. The pull between them flickered. Sharper. Instant. Both of them felt it at the same time. Nova’s fingers tightened slightly at her side. Kade stopped mid-step. His breath slowed. A beat of silence stretched. Then— It vanished again. Like it had never existed. Kade’s jaw tightened. Nova’s expression cooled instantly. Neither of them spoke. But something had already changed. They just didn’t know what yet.
