CHAPTER 5: THE MASK SLIPS

1205 Words
By the fifth day of Nova Blackwood’s return, Silver Moon Pack had stopped pretending everything was normal. Nothing had openly broken. But everything had started to bend. And in a pack ruled by dominance and certainty, bending was the first stage of collapse. --- KADE Alpha Kade Sinclair stood at the edge of the ceremonial courtyard, watching the preparations for the Moon Assembly. It was an annual gathering — not for celebration, but for hierarchy. Every noble wolf, every ranked warrior, every allied pack envoy would be present. A stage. And today, Nova would stand on it. That thought alone tightened something in his chest. Not anger. Not exactly. Something more irritating. Unfinished. His wolf had been quiet since the last incident in the hallway. Too quiet. Kade didn’t trust silence anymore. “Alpha,” a voice called. He turned slightly. Elder Maeron approached with caution written all over him. “The guests are arriving,” Maeron said. “And… the Northern Black delegation has already taken position near the east platform.” Kade’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Of course they have.” Maeron hesitated. “There is also the matter of Luna Nova Blackwood.” Kade’s jaw tightened at the title. “She is not Luna of this pack,” he said flatly. Maeron didn’t argue. That would have been suicide. Instead, he lowered his voice. “She requested central standing during the assembly.” A pause. Kade finally looked at him fully. “She requested?” “Yes, Alpha.” Silence. That wasn’t how envoys behaved. That was how people tested boundaries. Kade exhaled slowly. “Let her,” he said. Maeron blinked. “Alpha—” “If she wants visibility,” Kade continued calmly, “then she will have it.” A faint edge entered his tone. “And so will I.” --- NOVA The courtyard was louder than Nova remembered. Not from noise alone. From attention. Eyes followed her everywhere she moved. Some curious. Some hostile. Some afraid. Fear was the most honest of them all. Nova walked through it without changing her expression. Her cloak flowed behind her, black against the silver-drenched architecture of Silver Moon Pack. A deliberate contrast. She didn’t look like she belonged here. She looked like she had outgrown it. Beside the central platform, the Northern Black delegates stood silently. They didn’t need to speak. Their presence was enough. Nova stopped at the base of the platform. Above her, she could feel it. Kade’s presence. Not physically yet. But close. Watching. Always watching. Her wolf stirred faintly. That pull again. Stronger in open space. Sharper when crowds were present. Nova’s fingers curled slightly. “Not now,” she murmured under her breath. Her wolf didn’t respond. It simply waited. --- KADE From the upper platform, Kade watched her enter. And something in him tightened. Not because of how she looked. But because of how she moved. Controlled. Measured. Like every step was chosen, not taken. She wasn’t reacting to the crowd. She was measuring it. Calculating it. That was new. Or maybe it had always been there. And he had never seen it. Kade stepped forward onto the platform. The courtyard quieted immediately. Alpha presence demanded it. But when Nova stepped onto the opposite side of the central space— The silence shifted. It wasn’t obedience anymore. It was anticipation. That irritated him more than he expected. Because it wasn’t supposed to happen. Not for her. Not here. --- THE ASSEMBLY Elder representatives began the formal proceedings. Announcements. Territory reports. Alliance confirmations. None of it mattered. Not really. Not when every eye kept drifting toward the two figures standing on opposite sides of the courtyard. Kade noticed it. Nova noticed it. Neither acknowledged it. Until— “Now,” Elder Selia said carefully, “we address the proposed restructuring of Eastern Ridge territory.” A ripple passed through the crowd. Kade’s gaze sharpened. Nova stepped forward. Calm. Unhurried. “As previously stated,” she said, voice carrying clearly, “Eastern Ridge will be transferred under Northern Black control for joint security management.” Murmurs erupted immediately. A Silver Moon warrior shouted, “That land is ours!” Nova didn’t even look at him. “I didn’t ask who it belonged to emotionally,” she said flatly. “I stated what is happening strategically.” The courtyard tightened. Kade’s jaw flexed. He stepped forward. “You don’t get to declare changes to my territory in my own assembly.” Nova finally turned her head toward him. Slowly. That alone shifted the air. “I didn’t declare,” she corrected. “I informed.” A pause. Then quieter: “You’re still reacting like this is about pride.” Kade’s eyes darkened slightly. “And what is it about, then?” Nova held his gaze. For a fraction of a second, something flickered between them again. That pressure. That invisible pull. It spiked. Suddenly— A sharp wave hit both of them at the same time. Kade staggered half a step. Nova’s breath caught briefly. The crowd noticed. Whispers erupted instantly. “What was that?” “Did you see that?” “Was that—bond reaction?” Kade immediately straightened, expression hardening. “What just happened?” a commander demanded. But neither Alpha answered. Because both of them were frozen in the same realization. It had leaked. Something between them had become visible. Even if only for a second. Nova’s eyes narrowed slightly. Kade’s expression was sharper now. Controlled. But shaken. And for the first time— He didn’t look fully in command. --- KADE Later, he caught her leaving the courtyard. He stopped her. Not gently. Not aggressively either. Just… decisively. “Nova.” She paused. Didn’t turn immediately. That alone irritated him. When she finally faced him, her expression was unreadable. “Yes?” Kade stepped closer. The distance between them felt… unstable. “What happened back there?” he asked. Nova studied him for a moment. Then: “You felt it too.” Not a question. A statement. Kade didn’t deny it. That silence was answer enough. Nova’s gaze sharpened slightly. “It shouldn’t be happening,” she said. Kade’s jaw tightened. “I rejected you,” he said flatly. A pause. The air shifted. Nova’s expression didn’t change. But something colder settled behind her eyes. “Yes,” she said. “You did.” Silence. Then quieter: “And yet… here we are.” Kade’s wolf stirred again. Immediate. Unwanted. Stronger than before. He hated that. Nova stepped back slightly. “Control it,” she said. Kade frowned. “Control what?” Her eyes met his. “That.” A beat. Neither of them moved. The pull flickered again — sharper this time, almost painful. Kade’s breath slowed slightly before he forced it steady. Nova’s fingers curled once at her side. Then— It vanished. Again. Leaving only tension behind. Nova turned away first. “You’re losing control of your pack,” she said calmly as she walked off. “Focus on that instead of ghosts.” Kade didn’t answer. But as he watched her leave— One thought settled in his mind. This wasn’t a ghost. Ghosts didn’t pull back.
