CHAPTER 3: THE BOND THAT SHOULDN’T EXIST

1315 Words
The night after the council meeting did not bring peace. It brought silence that felt wrong. Silver Moon Pack was never truly quiet — even at rest, it breathed: guards shifting, wolves patrolling, distant howls marking territory lines. But tonight, something was off. Like the pack itself was holding its breath. --- KADE Alpha Kade Sinclair stood alone in the highest tower of the Silver Moon residence. From here, he could see everything — the borders, the training grounds, the faint torchlights of patrols moving through the forest. Control used to feel absolute from this height. Now it felt… thin. Fragile in a way he couldn’t explain. His wolf paced beneath his skin. Restless. Uneasy. That alone irritated him. His wolf was never restless without reason. Kade pressed his palm against the stone wall, grounding himself. “You’re imagining things,” he muttered under his breath. But even as he said it, he knew it wasn’t true. Because he had felt it earlier. In the council hall. When she looked at him. Nova Blackwood. The name alone should not have carried weight anymore. She was a past mistake. A ghost of a decision he had already justified a hundred times. And yet— His chest tightened slightly. Kade frowned. That wasn’t physical pain. It was something else. A pull. Faint. Unwanted. Wrong. His wolf stopped pacing. It listened. Kade exhaled slowly. “No,” he said sharply to himself. “That bond is dead.” It had to be. Rejection severed mate bonds. Everyone knew that. Every Alpha knew that. He had marked the rejection himself — publicly, cleanly, decisively. Unworthy. One word. That should have ended everything. So why— A sudden sharp sting hit his chest. Kade’s hand clenched against the stone. His breath slowed. The sensation passed quickly, but it left something behind. Recognition. His wolf whispered beneath the surface: She is not gone. Kade’s jaw tightened violently. “Impossible,” he growled. But the doubt had already taken root. --- NOVA Across the estate, Nova stood in the guest quarters they had assigned her. Assigned. Not offered. Not welcomed. Contained. The room was large, decorated in Silver Moon’s traditional silver-and-white palette. Expensive. Cold. Carefully impersonal. A diplomatic space pretending to be hospitality. Nova stood by the window, looking out at the same forest Kade watched from his tower. Funny. They were both awake. Both unsettled. She could feel it too. Not emotions. Not thoughts. Something deeper. Like pressure beneath the skin of reality. Her wolf stirred once. Slowly. Carefully. Nova didn’t speak to it. Not yet. Instead, she pressed two fingers against her wrist and closed her eyes. Focus. Control. That was what the Northern Black Pack had trained into her. Control over instinct. Control over memory. Control over pain. But not control over that… sensation. It came again. A faint tug in her chest. Not hers. Not fully hers. Something shared. Nova opened her eyes immediately. Her expression hardened. “No,” she whispered. Because she understood what it meant. And she refused it. Refused the idea that anything tied her to Silver Moon Pack again. Especially him. Alpha Kade Sinclair had destroyed that version of her life. There was nothing left to connect them. Nothing real. Nothing alive. And yet— Her wolf shifted uneasily. He feels it too, it murmured. Nova’s eyes narrowed. “Silence.” The wolf obeyed. But did not disappear. Because some things did not vanish just because you ordered them to. --- KADE Sleep did not come. Kade left the tower and walked the corridors of the estate instead. Empty halls. Cold light. Familiar architecture that suddenly felt too tight for his skin. Every step echoed too loudly. He hated that. Control was slipping. That was unacceptable. As he moved, he passed guards who straightened instantly. “Alpha,” they greeted. He nodded once. Nothing more. But even their presence didn’t settle him. Because the feeling followed him. That pull. It wasn’t strong. It was worse than strong. It was persistent. Like something knocking quietly at the back of his mind, refusing to leave. Kade stopped walking. He pressed two fingers to his temple. Focus. He reached inward for his wolf, forcing dominance, trying to silence the agitation. But instead of calming— His wolf pushed back. Hard. Kade’s eyes sharpened. This had never happened before. Ever. A sudden memory flashed. Nova’s eyes in the council hall. Not fearful. Not broken. Not obedient. Just… steady. Like she knew something he didn’t. Kade’s chest tightened again. The sensation spiked. This time sharper. Like a thread being pulled. His breath stopped for half a second. Then it vanished. Kade staggered slightly, catching himself against the wall. For the first time in years, uncertainty flickered in his mind. “What are you?” he whispered into the empty hall. --- NOVA Nova did not sleep. She trained instead. Silent movements in the dim light of her quarters — controlled strikes, breath pacing, grounding exercises. Pain management was easier than thought management. Thoughts betrayed. The body obeyed. But even as she moved, the sensation persisted. A pull. Not strong enough to control her. But strong enough to distract her. She struck forward sharply into the air. Too fast. Too forceful. The movement cracked the wooden training post she had improvised. She froze. Then exhaled slowly. Her control was slipping. That was unacceptable. Nova stepped back, rolling her shoulders, forcing her wolf down again. But the wolf didn’t fully retreat. It lingered at the edge of her consciousness. Watching. Waiting. “Stop reacting,” Nova muttered under her breath. But she wasn’t sure who she was talking to anymore. Her wolf answered anyway. It is him. Nova’s eyes darkened instantly. “No.” It is the bond. Her hands clenched. “There is no bond.” But even as she said it— She felt it again. Faint. Unmistakable. Not emotion. Not memory. Recognition. Her chest tightened slightly. And for the first time since her return to Silver Moon Pack— Nova hesitated. Just for a second. And that second was enough for everything to begin shifting. --- KADE At dawn, Kade stood outside the training grounds. He had not slept. He had not spoken to anyone. He had not resolved anything. The sensation had not returned during the night. But the absence of it felt worse. Because now he was waiting for it. That was the problem. Waiting meant acknowledgment. And acknowledgment meant possibility. His wolf was quiet again. Too quiet. “Something is wrong,” Kade said aloud. One of the senior warriors nearby stiffened. “Alpha?” Kade didn’t look at him. “That bond is dead,” he said. The warrior hesitated. “The rejection—” “I know what I did,” Kade snapped. Silence. Then softer, controlled again: “I felt something last night.” The warrior didn’t respond. He didn’t know how. Kade’s jaw tightened. He hated uncertainty. He hated anything he couldn’t dominate. And Nova— Nova was becoming exactly that. A variable he could not calculate. A force he could not dismiss. And worst of all— Something inside him refused to call her a mistake anymore. --- NOVA From her window, Nova saw him. Standing at the training grounds. Still. Watching the horizon like it might answer him. Even from this distance, she felt it again. That pull. Stronger in daylight. Clearer now. Her fingers tightened slightly against the window frame. Her wolf stirred. Not afraid. Not submissive. Alert. Nova watched him for a long moment. Then turned away. “Focus,” she told herself. But as she walked back into the room, one thought followed her anyway. If the bond is real… it means something survived. And Nova Blackwood did not survive the past just to inherit something that still tied her to it. Not even fate.
