CHAPTER 11: THE NORTHERN KING

955 Words
The gates of Silver Moon remained closed. No arrows were fired. No warriors charged. Hundreds of wolves stood on opposite sides of the massive walls, waiting for a single command that could drown the forest in blood. A cold wind swept through the valley. Even nature seemed to pause. Alpha Kade Sinclair stood at the front of his warriors, his hand resting on the hilt of his silver-forged sword. Beside him stood Nova Blackwood. Neither spoke. Both watched the lone figure waiting beyond the gates. The man wore a long black cloak trimmed with dark silver fur. His face remained hidden beneath the hood, yet his presence pressed against every wolf in the valley. Several younger warriors struggled to breathe. One dropped to a knee. Another lowered his eyes instinctively. "This pressure..." Commander Rowan whispered. "Who is he?" No one answered. Because no one knew. Except Nova. Her heartbeat remained steady. But her wolf was no longer restless. It had gone completely silent. Waiting. Watching. Recognizing. Kade noticed. His jaw tightened. "Open the gates," he ordered. The command shocked everyone. "Alpha!" Elder Maeron protested. "We don't know their intentions." "If they wanted war," Kade replied without taking his eyes off the stranger, "the battle would have started already." The great wooden gates creaked open. The mysterious man walked forward alone. His warriors remained behind him. Every step echoed across the stone path. Calm. Measured. Absolute. When he finally stopped a few feet away, he slowly removed his hood. Dark hair. Steel-gray eyes. A face carved from years of battle and command. He wasn't old. He simply carried the weight of too many victories. His gaze ignored everyone else. It settled directly on Nova. "I finally found you," he said. The words struck her harder than any weapon. Kade stepped between them almost instinctively. "You stand before the Alpha of Silver Moon Pack," he said coldly. "State your name and your purpose." The stranger's eyes shifted to Kade. For the first time, a faint smile appeared. "So," he said quietly, "you're the one." Kade frowned. "The one who rejected what never belonged to him." Silence exploded across the courtyard. Every elder looked between Nova and Kade. Kade's wolf lunged beneath his skin. His voice dropped dangerously. "Choose your next words carefully." The stranger remained completely calm. "My name is Alpha Lucien Draven." Several elders gasped. Even Commander Rowan's face lost its color. "The Shadow King..." someone whispered. Stories of the Northern Alpha had traveled across every pack. He was said to have united the northern territories through strength alone. Packs either followed him willingly... Or disappeared. Lucien looked back at Nova. "You've delayed long enough." Nova finally spoke. "I wasn't expecting you." "No," Lucien replied. "You were expected to finish your mission." Mission. The single word caught Kade's attention. "What mission?" he demanded. Nova didn't answer. Lucien answered for her. "I sent her here." The courtyard erupted into chaos. "She's a spy!" "I knew it!" "Traitor!" Silver Moon warriors immediately surrounded Nova. Weapons were drawn. The Northern warriors beyond the gate instantly responded, drawing their own blades. One wrong move... And hundreds would die. Nova slowly raised one hand. Every Northern warrior lowered their weapons immediately. The Silver Moon wolves stared in disbelief. One simple gesture. Complete obedience. Kade looked at her. For the first time... He realized he had never truly understood how much power she now possessed. His chest tightened. Not from anger. From realization. The rejected girl had become someone capable of commanding armies. Lucien spoke again. "Enough." His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. Silence followed instantly. Even Silver Moon's warriors felt the authority behind it. Lucien took one step closer. "I'm not here to start a war." Kade didn't lower his guard. "Then why are you here?" Lucien's gray eyes rested on Nova once more. "To bring her home." Nova's expression remained unreadable. "I haven't finished." "You have." "No." Their eyes locked. Two leaders. Two wills refusing to bend. Lucien studied her quietly before speaking again. "Revenge has already begun." "It isn't enough." "It never will be." Those words lingered in the air. For the first time since returning to Silver Moon... Something cracked inside Nova. Not visibly. But deeply. Lucien saw it. Kade saw it. Neither spoke. Finally, Lucien reached inside his cloak and removed a sealed black envelope. He held it toward Kade. "A gift." Kade accepted it cautiously. Breaking the seal, he unfolded the document. His expression changed immediately. Confusion. Then disbelief. Then anger. The paper contained the names of seven Silver Moon wolves. Each one marked with evidence of secretly selling patrol routes to rogue mercenaries over the past year. The missing patrols... The destroyed armory... The collapsing borders... Someone inside Silver Moon had caused them. Not Nova. Kade slowly lifted his eyes toward Lucien. "Where did you get this?" Lucien answered calmly. "I don't tolerate traitors." Then he looked at Nova one last time. "The game has changed." Without another word, he turned and walked back toward his waiting warriors. His army followed. Within minutes... The northern force disappeared into the forest as silently as it had arrived. No battle. No bloodshed. Only questions. Kade remained standing in the courtyard, the envelope still clutched tightly in his hand. He slowly turned toward Nova. "You knew." Nova met his gaze. "I suspected." "And you said nothing." "You wouldn't have believed me." Kade wanted to deny it. He couldn't. Because she was right. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The distance between them suddenly felt much greater than a few feet. It felt like years. And somewhere deep inside Kade's wolf... For the first time... Regret stopped being a feeling. It became a wound.
