CHAPTER 13: THE HIDDEN HAND

977 Words
The death of the two captured scouts changed everything. Before, Silver Moon Pack had a traitor problem. Now, they had a war problem. Because someone inside their walls was not trying to hide. They were sending a message. --- NOVA Nova stood in the empty prison tower, staring at the two bodies lying beneath the white sheets. The guards had already left. Not because she asked them to. Because Kade had ordered everyone away the moment she entered. For once, he understood the value of silence. She pulled the sheet back slightly and examined the wounds. Clean. Precise. No struggle. No panic. The killer had not fought them. The killer had walked in. That was the most dangerous part. Nova's eyes narrowed. "Someone with authority." A voice came from behind her. "That's what I thought too." She didn't turn. She already knew who it was. "Kade." He stepped beside her, his expression serious. For a moment, neither spoke. The distance between them felt different now. Less like hatred. More like two enemies forced to stand on the same battlefield. Nova pointed toward the bodies. "They weren't killed because they knew too much." Kade frowned. "Then why?" "Because they were about to tell us the wrong thing." He looked at her. "What does that mean?" Nova finally faced him. "It means whoever is controlling this operation wanted us distracted by the traitors." Silence. Kade understood immediately. The betrayal inside Silver Moon wasn't the entire plan. It was only the beginning. "What are you saying?" "I'm saying the people we caught are not the ones we should fear." --- KADE For the first time in days, Kade didn't question her. That realization bothered him. Five years ago, he would have dismissed her words before hearing them. Now? Now he listened. And that change felt like a punishment. Because it reminded him of everything he had lost. The girl who once looked at him with admiration was gone. The woman standing before him didn't seek his approval. She didn't need it. "You know more than you're telling me," he said. Nova's expression remained calm. "I know enough." "That's not an answer." "It is the only answer you are ready for." His eyes hardened. "You still think I can't handle the truth." "No." A pause. "I think you can't handle what the truth says about you." The words hit harder than he expected. Because he knew exactly what she meant. The truth wasn't only about traitors. It was about him. About the night he rejected her. About the years he spent believing he had made the correct choice. About the possibility that he had destroyed something he never understood. --- NOVA She turned away from him. This conversation was becoming dangerous. Not because of Kade. Because of herself. Every time they stood too close, every time their wolves reacted, something inside her weakened. Not her strength. Her certainty. And certainty was the only thing that kept revenge clean. A knock interrupted them. Commander Rowan entered. "Alpha." Kade looked over. "What is it?" Rowan hesitated. Then looked at Nova. That told her everything. "Speak." "We found something in Captain Darius' quarters." Kade's expression changed. "What?" "A hidden chamber." --- THE HIDDEN CHAMBER The room beneath Darius' quarters was small. Too small for living. Too organized for hiding. Maps covered the walls. Territory routes. Guard schedules. Alliance information. Everything. Nova walked slowly through the room. Kade followed. Neither spoke. Because the evidence was worse than expected. Darius hadn't just been selling information. He had been preparing for an invasion. Nova stopped in front of one particular map. Silver Moon territory. Marked with red symbols. Attack points. Weak areas. And one final mark. The Alpha's estate. Kade saw it too. His face darkened. "This was never about stealing weapons." "No," Nova replied. Her eyes remained on the map. "It was about removing leadership." A cold silence filled the room. Then Rowan found something else. A small black box hidden beneath the table. He opened it carefully. Inside was a symbol carved into dark metal. Not Silver Moon. Not Northern Black. Something older. Something unfamiliar. Kade stared at it. "Do you recognize that?" Nova didn't answer immediately. Because she did. And that scared her. Not because of what it was. Because of what it meant. "The Shadow Mark." Kade looked at her. "Lucien's symbol?" Nova shook her head slowly. "No." A pause. "Older." The room went silent. Even Kade looked unsettled. "What does it mean?" Nova touched the symbol lightly. Her wolf reacted instantly. A sharp wave of recognition. A warning. She pulled her hand back. "It means this conflict started long before I returned." --- KADE Later that night, Kade stood alone on the balcony overlooking Silver Moon. Everything he had built was being questioned. His council. His warriors. His judgment. And somehow, the person he trusted least was the one person who kept seeing the truth. Nova. He hated admitting it. But he needed her. The thought disturbed him. Because needing someone meant giving them power. And Nova already had enough power to destroy him. A shadow moved behind him. He turned immediately. Nova stood there. Unexpected. "What are you doing here?" She looked toward the territory. "Someone is watching us." Kade frowned. "Who?" "I don't know." That answer bothered him. Nova always seemed to know more. But this time... She was uncertain. Then both of them felt it. A sudden shift in the air. A strange pressure. Not from their bond. Something else. Something nearby. They turned toward the forest. A figure stood between the trees. Watching. Waiting. And before either of them could move— The figure disappeared. Kade's expression hardened. Nova's eyes narrowed. Because whoever was behind this was no longer hiding. They wanted to be found. And that meant one thing. The real enemy had finally entered the game.
