CHAPTER 16: THE PRICE OF SURVIVAL

1012 Words
The morning after the Crimson Circle appeared, Silver Moon Pack felt different. Not weaker. Not afraid. Awake. Everyone understood something had changed. The enemy was no longer hiding in the shadows. They had revealed themselves. And with that revelation came a terrifying truth. Nova Blackwood's past was not buried. It had been waiting. --- ### NOVA Nova stood alone in the training grounds before sunrise. The same place where Kade had found her days ago. The same place where her control had almost slipped. But today was different. Her movements were sharper. Faster. More aggressive. Every strike against the wooden target carried years of anger behind it. The Crimson Circle. The memories. The betrayal. The helpless girl she used to be. She hated remembering her. Not because she was weak. Because that girl trusted people. And trust was the first thing the world took from her. A sound behind her made her stop. She didn't turn. "You always train when you're angry." Kade. Of course. Nova lowered her hand. "You've been watching me a lot lately." A pause. "I have." The honesty surprised her. She finally turned. Kade stood a few feet away, no guards, no council, no Alpha mask. Just him. For a moment, she almost saw the boy who had once smiled at her. Almost. Then she remembered. --- ### KADE He had spent the entire night thinking about what the Crimson Circle said. Not about them. About her. *Where was that protection when you broke her?* The words had followed him. Because they were true. He had spent years believing his rejection was necessary. That he had protected Silver Moon by choosing strength over emotion. But he had never considered what happened after. He had never asked where Nova went. Who found her. What she endured. He looked at her now. The woman standing before him was proof of everything he failed to understand. "I want to know what happened." Nova's expression remained blank. "Why?" "Because I should have asked five years ago." Silence. That answer caught her off guard. Only slightly. But he noticed. Kade continued. "I know you don't owe me an explanation." A pause. "But I need to understand." Nova looked away. "Understanding won't change anything." "I know." "Apologies won't fix it." "I know." "Regret won't bring back the person I was." Kade's voice lowered. "I know." That made her look at him again. Because he wasn't arguing. He wasn't defending himself. And somehow that was harder to handle. --- ### NOVA'S PAST For years, Nova had refused to speak about what happened after leaving Silver Moon. But the enemy had returned. And secrets had become dangerous. "I spent three weeks alone." Kade went still. "Three weeks?" Nova nodded. "No pack. No protection. No family." Her voice remained calm. But he heard the pain beneath it. "I was eighteen years old, rejected by my mate, abandoned by the only place I knew." A pause. "I thought surviving was enough." She looked toward the mountains. "Then I learned survival was the easy part." Kade listened silently. "The rogues found me first." His hands tightened. "What did they do?" Nova's eyes hardened. "They tried to break me." A cold silence followed. "But they failed." She looked back at him. "Because Lucien found me." Kade's expression changed slightly at the name. "Lucien." "Yes." "You trust him." Nova didn't hesitate. "With my life." The answer bothered him. More than it should have. But he didn't let it show. --- ### KADE He had known jealousy before. Political jealousy. Rival jealousy. The kind that came from another Alpha challenging his authority. This was different. This was personal. Lucien had been there when Kade wasn't. Lucien had protected the woman Kade destroyed. Lucien had watched Nova become powerful. While Kade had remained trapped in the past. He hated that. Not Lucien. Himself. "What did he teach you?" Nova looked at him. "Everything you thought I could never become." The words landed quietly. But they hit harder than anger. Kade looked away. Because he deserved them. --- ### NOVA She hadn't planned to tell him that much. But something about his silence made it easier. Not forgiveness. Never that. But honesty. Then— A sudden pain shot through her chest. She froze. Kade noticed instantly. "Nova?" She ignored him. Her wolf had reacted. Not to Kade. Not to the bond. To something else. A memory. A warning. The mark on the watchtower. The Crimson Circle. The old symbol. They were connected. And she finally understood. "They aren't here for revenge." Kade frowned. "What?" Nova's expression changed. "They're looking for something." "What?" She closed her eyes briefly. Then whispered: "Me." --- ### THE DISCOVERY That evening, the council gathered again. This time, Nova brought the information herself. "The Crimson Circle was not created to destroy packs." Elder Selia frowned. "Then what was its purpose?" Nova placed an old symbol on the table. The same symbol found beneath Darius' quarters. The room went silent. "They were searching for wolves with rare bloodlines." Kade looked at her. "Why?" Nova's voice lowered. "Because they believed certain wolves could change the balance of power." A pause. "And I am one of them." Nobody spoke. Then Elder Maeron asked the question everyone was thinking. "What makes you different?" Nova looked at her own hands. A question she had avoided for years. "I don't know." And for once... She admitted uncertainty. "The Northern Alpha knows more than he told me." Kade's eyes sharpened. "Then we need answers." Nova looked toward the mountains. "No." Everyone turned to her. "We need to survive long enough to get them." --- That night, a message arrived. Not from an enemy. From the North. A black seal. Lucien Draven's mark. Inside were only five words: **THEY KNOW WHAT SHE IS.** Nova stared at the message. For the first time in five years— She felt something she hated. Fear. Because whoever the Crimson Circle was searching for... She was beginning to suspect they weren't searching for Nova Blackwood. They were searching for something inside her.
