CHAPTER 14: THE ENEMY WITHIN

923 Words
The figure in the forest was gone. But the feeling remained. Like a blade pressed against the throat of Silver Moon Pack. Kade stood on the balcony long after the stranger disappeared, his eyes fixed on the dark trees beyond the territory line. He had faced armies. He had faced rogue attacks. He had faced challengers who wanted his title. But this was different. An enemy who wanted him afraid was far more dangerous than one who wanted him dead. Behind him, Nova remained silent. And somehow, that silence unsettled him more than anything else. --- KADE "You know something." Nova didn't answer immediately. Kade turned toward her. "I've noticed something since you arrived." Her expression remained calm. "Have you?" "Yes." He stepped closer. "You always look like you're waiting for something to happen." A pause. "Like you know the next move before anyone else makes it." Nova looked away toward the forest. "Because most people reveal themselves when they think they're winning." Kade studied her. "You're not surprised by any of this." "No." The honesty caught him off guard. Kade's eyes narrowed. "Why?" Nova finally looked at him. "Because this is what happens when powerful people fight over something they don't understand." His expression changed. "Something?" She didn't answer. And that was answer enough. --- NOVA She hated this. Not the danger. Not the threat. Not even the possibility of war. Those things were simple. Enemies could be defeated. Wars could be won. But uncertainty? That was different. Because for the first time in years, Nova wasn't completely sure what game she was playing. The Shadow Mark. The hidden enemy. The strange reaction between her and Kade. Everything connected somehow. And she hated not seeing the entire board. Her wolf shifted. The past is waking. Nova's eyes darkened. "Not now." Kade looked at her. "What did you say?" "Nothing." But he didn't believe her. She noticed. Of course she noticed. --- SILVER MOON COUNCIL The next morning, the council gathered again. But this time, the atmosphere had changed. No one questioned Nova's presence. Not openly. That alone was a victory. The evidence against Captain Darius had spread throughout the pack. Trust had become fragile. Every wolf was watching every other wolf. Kade stood at the head of the table. "The traitor network is deeper than we originally believed." Elder Selia nodded. "We need to increase security." "We need to increase intelligence," Nova corrected. Every eye turned toward her. She continued. "Security protects what you already know exists." A pause. "Intelligence finds what you haven't discovered yet." Kade looked at her. Once again, he hated that she was right. Commander Rowan placed several reports on the table. "There is another issue." Kade picked them up. "What?" "Three allied packs have stopped responding to communication." Silence. Nova's expression changed slightly. Only slightly. But Kade noticed. "You know something." She looked at the reports. "The enemy isn't attacking Silver Moon." Kade frowned. "Then what are they doing?" Nova's voice lowered. "They are isolating it." The room went quiet. "They're cutting off allies before the first strike." Elder Maeron's face paled. "An invasion?" Nova looked at him. "No." A pause. "Worse." She pointed at the map. "A takeover." --- KADE The council left with orders before sunset. But Kade remained. So did Nova. The room felt strangely familiar now. Two enemies standing on the same side. Neither trusting the other. Yet neither walking away. Kade looked at her. "Why are you really here?" Nova didn't answer. He continued. "Not the alliance. Not revenge." His voice softened slightly. "Why did Lucien send you back?" That question landed differently. Because Nova had asked herself the same thing. Lucien had trained her. Protected her. Given her power. But he had never been careless. Everything he did had a purpose. And bringing her back to Silver Moon was not simply about territory. "I don't know." Kade stared at her. For once, she wasn't hiding behind confidence. She genuinely didn't know. That made the answer more dangerous. Before he could respond— A crash echoed from outside. Both turned instantly. A warrior rushed into the chamber. "Alpha!" Kade moved immediately. "What happened?" The warrior struggled to breathe. "The northern watchtower..." A pause. "It's been destroyed." Kade's face hardened. "By who?" The warrior looked between him and Nova. Then whispered: "They left a message." --- THE MESSAGE The destroyed watchtower stood as a warning. Not a battle site. A warning. The entire structure had been brought down with impossible precision. On the remaining stone wall, carved deep into the surface, were three words: THE LUNA RETURNS. The warriors around them exchanged fearful looks. Kade stared at the message. Nova remained still. Too still. Because she recognized it. Not the words. The style. The signature. Someone from her past. Someone who knew exactly who she had become. Kade noticed her reaction. "Nova." She didn't answer. "Who did this?" Slowly, she turned toward him. For the first time since returning to Silver Moon— There was something other than anger in her eyes. Concern. Real concern. And that frightened him. Because Nova Blackwood was not afraid of anything. Except this. Finally, she spoke. "The people who broke me the first time..." A cold wind passed through the ruined tower. "They've come to finish the job." Kade's expression darkened. "Who?" Nova looked toward the distant mountains. Toward the place where she had spent five years becoming someone else. "The ones who created the monster you rejected." Silence. And somewhere beyond the mountains... Something ancient awakened.
