CHAPTER 6: THE ACCUSATION

1017 Words
The night after the assembly did not settle Silver Moon Pack. It poisoned it. Whispers moved through the estate faster than patrol reports. Something happened between them. Something unnatural. Something wrong. And in a pack built on dominance, anything unexplainable was dangerous. --- NOVA Nova didn’t bother with sleep. She stood in her quarters, reading the latest report from the Northern Black scouts. Eastern Ridge stability: secured. Silver Moon patrol disruption: increasing. Internal morale: unstable. Her expression didn’t change as she folded the parchment. Good. Instability meant leverage. Leverage meant control. A knock came at her door. Once. Sharp. Official. Nova didn’t move immediately. She already knew who it was. “Enter,” she said calmly. The door opened. Elder Selia stepped inside, followed by two Silver Moon guards and one unfamiliar council envoy. Their presence wasn’t diplomatic. It was guarded. Nova turned slightly. “This isn’t a social visit,” she said. Selia didn’t smile. “This is a formal inquiry.” Nova tilted her head slightly. “About what?” The envoy stepped forward. A man in mid-ranking council robes. Nervous. Overcompensating. “Luna Nova Blackwood,” he began, “you are hereby requested to answer questions regarding unauthorized interference in Silver Moon border operations.” A pause. Nova blinked once. Then slowly: “Unauthorized?” Selia’s eyes sharpened. “Three patrol units disappeared near Eastern Ridge after your arrival. Yesterday, a similar pattern occurred during the assembly.” Nova’s gaze remained steady. “And you think I am responsible.” “It is a line of inquiry,” the envoy said quickly. Nova studied him for a moment. Then Selia. Then the guards. Finally: “No,” she said simply. Silence. The envoy frowned. “Excuse me?” Nova stepped forward slightly. “I didn’t ask for your accusation,” she said. “I acknowledged it.” Her voice dropped slightly. “And dismissed it.” The room stiffened. Selia’s expression tightened. “You are a foreign political figure with immediate strategic gain from weakening Silver Moon territory.” Nova’s eyes sharpened faintly. “Correct.” A pause. “Which means I would not be careless enough to be caught doing it.” Silence. The envoy hesitated. Nova turned slightly toward Selia. “If I were interfering,” she said calmly, “you wouldn’t be standing in my room asking questions.” A beat. “You’d be replacing your leadership.” The air turned cold instantly. One of the guards shifted. Instinctively uneasy. Selia’s expression hardened. “Are you threatening this council?” Nova looked at her. “No,” she said quietly. “I’m explaining scale.” --- KADE He arrived mid-interrogation. Not announced. Not expected. Just present. The room shifted immediately when Alpha Kade Sinclair stepped inside. Even Selia straightened. The envoy looked relieved. Nova didn’t turn immediately. She already felt him. That pressure again. Close. Controlled. Watching. Kade’s voice cut through the room. “What is going on?” Selia stepped forward quickly. “Alpha, we are conducting an inquiry into recent territorial breaches and patrol disappearances.” Kade’s gaze didn’t leave Nova. “I see.” A pause. Then colder: “And you chose her as the suspect.” Selia hesitated. “The timing is—” “Not evidence,” Kade finished sharply. Silence. Nova finally turned. Their eyes met. That same pull flickered instantly between them — sharper than before. Kade felt it immediately. So did she. Neither reacted outwardly. But something in the air tightened. Kade stepped further inside. “I will handle this,” he said. Selia looked uncertain. “Alpha—” “I said,” Kade repeated, voice lower now, “I will handle it.” Silence. The envoy bowed slightly and quickly left the room with the guards. Selia followed after a tense pause. The door shut. Leaving only them. --- KADE & NOVA For a moment, neither spoke. The room felt smaller than before. Kade’s gaze remained fixed on her. Nova returned it without blinking. “You’re causing chaos,” Kade said finally. Nova tilted her head slightly. “I arrived and your pack started falling apart?” she said. “Interesting conclusion.” Kade stepped closer. The pull flickered again. Immediate. Sharp. He stopped halfway. A pause. His jaw tightened slightly. Nova noticed. Of course she did. “You feel it again,” she said quietly. Kade didn’t answer immediately. That hesitation was enough. Nova’s expression hardened slightly. “It’s interfering with your judgment,” she continued. Kade’s voice lowered. “My judgment is not the problem.” A beat. “Then what is?” Nova asked. Silence stretched. Because neither of them wanted to say it. Not yet. Finally, Kade spoke. “I don’t believe this is coincidence anymore.” Nova’s eyes sharpened. “Coincidence?” Kade stepped closer again, slower this time. Controlled. Measured. “The patrol disappearances,” he said. “The timing. The… reactions.” His gaze locked onto hers. “Something is connected to you.” Nova didn’t flinch. Instead, she smiled faintly. “That’s not an accusation,” she said. “That’s an admission of curiosity.” Kade ignored that. “What are you?” he asked. The question hung between them. Heavy. Direct. Nova held his gaze for a long moment. Then: “I’m the consequence,” she said quietly. A pause. Kade’s wolf stirred sharply. Nova noticed the reaction instantly. So did he. That pull again. Stronger. Closer. Kade’s breath slowed slightly before he forced it steady. “That’s not an answer,” he said. “It’s the only one you need,” Nova replied. Silence. The air between them tightened again. For a brief second— That same invisible force surged. Both of them felt it instantly. This time stronger than before. Kade’s hand tightened at his side. Nova’s fingers curled slightly. Neither moved. Neither spoke. And then— It vanished again. Leaving tension like a wound that didn’t close. Kade exhaled slowly. “This isn’t over,” he said. Nova’s gaze didn’t break. “It hasn’t even started,” she replied.
