Chapter 1: The Threshold of Debt and Fire
The midnight air at the pack border smelled of wet pine and cheap adrenaline.
Elena’s fingers shook so violently she could barely thread the silver laces of the heavy velvet gown.
The emerald fabric dragged in the mud, weighing her down like lead, but her sister didn't care.
"Stop trembling, Elena," Bianca hissed.
Her nails dug sharp crescents into Elena’s bare shoulders as she yanked the bodice tighter.
"If you ruin this dress, or if your voice gives out, our entire family goes to the debt-sludge mines by morning."
"I can't do this, Bianca," Elena whispered.
Her breath frosted in the biting wind. "It’s Alpha King Maverick. They say his wolf tore a challenger’s throat out with his bare teeth last winter. If he finds out I’m not you—if he realizes I’m just a low-ranked nobody—he won't just banish us. He’ll execute us both for treason."
"He won't find out," Bianca snapped.
Her eyes were wide and manic with panic.
With a swift, practiced motion, Bianca reached into her coat and pulled out an old, jagged piece of obsidian glass.
It was their grandmother’s blood-amulet, an illegal ancestral heirloom humming with a faint, crimson pulse.
Bianca pressed the sharp edge against her own collarbone just long enough to draw a single drop of dark blood.
She fed the stone until it flared with a sickly, warm light.
Then, she shoved the warm amulet violently against Elena’s skin, tucking it deep inside the royal bodice right over Elena’s heart.
The moment the stone touched Elena, a searing wave of heat shot through her veins.
Her skin prickled as the ancient magic took hold, rewriting the invisible air around her.
It locked down her true scent and projected Bianca’s rich, royal pheromones outward like an invisible shield.
"The blood-amulet will mask you," Bianca muttered.
She smoothed down Elena's dark hair with frantic, shaking hands. "It forces the pack’s legal stones to accept your signature as mine. You just have to survive seven days at the royal fortress, smile at the elders, and keep your mouth shut."
"And you?" Elena asked.
She backed away as the cold iron gates of the royal packhouse loomed ten yards away through the fog. "Where will you be?"
"Far away from a tyrant," Bianca said coldly.
She turned on her heel and melted back into the dark shadows of the pine forest without a backward glance.
Elena stood alone in the freezing dark.
The weight of a royal empire pressed down on her collarbone.
She had no choice.
Behind her lay a lifetime of debt, hunger, and shame. Ahead of her lay the most dangerous man alive.
Taking a shuddering breath, Elena pulled the heavy velvet hood over her head.
She forced her trembling legs to move forward toward the towering gates.
The sentries did not challenge her.
As she approached, the ancient runestones embedded in the stone pillars flared with a bright, blinding white light.
They recognized the forged signature of the blood-amulet, welcoming her as the registered fated mate.
The heavy iron gates groaned on their hinges, parting slowly like the jaws of a sleeping beast.
Elena stepped past the threshold into the inner courtyard.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
The ambient sounds of the forest died away, replaced by a heavy, suffocating pressure that made the air feel thick enough to choke on.
It wasn't just cold; it was predatory.
The hair on the back of Elena's arms stood straight up.
Deep inside her chest, her suppressed inner wolf gave a violent, panicked lurch, whimpering against her ribs.
From the shadows of the grand obsidian staircase, a single figure detached itself from the gloom.
Alpha King Maverick.
He didn't walk. He stalked forward with the terrifying, effortless grace of an apex predator.
He wore a dark, tailored coat that swallowed the dim torchlight. His broad shoulders filled the space between the stone pillars.
Elena froze.
Every instinct screamed at her to turn and run.
Maverick stopped three paces away.
His jaw was hard as carved granite. His eyes—a piercing, molten gold—cut through the darkness, locking onto her with an intensity that burned straight to the bone.
The air grew impossibly heavy.
The barometric pressure dropped so fast Elena’s ears popped.
Maverick didn't speak.
He just stared at her, his nostrils flaring as he drew in a deep, slow breath of the night air, tracking her scent.
Then, the gold in his eyes flared wide, swallowing the dark entirely as a low, dangerous growl rumbled deep in his chest.
