Finding Friendship and Support
Ghlen walked into the bustling corridors of the University of Cordillera, his heart pounding with a mix of nerves and excitement. It was his first day as a nursing student, and he couldn't help but feel a wave of shyness wash over him. He had always been a reserved and introverted person, and the thought of stepping into a room filled with unfamiliar faces made him anxious.
As Ghlen entered the classroom, he noticed the seats were quickly filling up. He hesitated for a moment, unsure of where to sit. His eyes scanned the room, searching for an empty spot. He felt the weight of gazes from his fellow students, and it only intensified his shyness.
Just as he was about to settle for a seat at the back, a friendly voice called out to him. "Umali ka sina, sina ta ay tumukdo," which means "Hey there, come here and sit with me." Ghlen was shocked because they spoke the same language. Ghlen didn't say a word and sat beside the guy who invited him to sit.
As Ghlen sat, the guy that called him asked for his name and introduced himself as Shane. Ghlen managed a small smile, feeling a glimmer of relief. "I'm Ghlen," he replied softly.
As the class began, Ghlen found himself caught in a whirlwind of information and introductions. He listened attentively to the professor's lecture, his mind racing to absorb as much as he could. Meanwhile, his shyness made it difficult for him to participate in the group discussions and class activities.
Throughout the day, Shane noticed Ghlen's reserved nature and his struggle to overcome his shyness. Sensing his discomfort, he made an effort to include him in the conversations, asking for his thoughts and opinions. Minutes passed, he introduced him to a few other students that he knew, making sure Ghlen felt welcomed and supported.
During a break between classes, Shane approached Ghlen with a friendly smile. "Hey, Ghlen," he greeted him warmly. "What are your thoughts on the professor's lecture? I'd love to hear your perspective."
Ghlen looked pleasantly surprised by Shane's direct approach, and a shy smile formed on his face. "Um, well, I found it quite informative. The professor explained the concepts in a clear manner."
Shane nodded, genuinely interested in Ghlen's opinion. "That's great to hear! What specifically stood out to you?"
Ghlen took a moment to gather his thoughts, appreciating Shane's encouragement. "I think the emphasis on patient-centered care really resonated with me. It reminded me of the importance of treating each person as an individual and providing personalized care."
Shane's eyes lit up with enthusiasm, acknowledging Ghlen's contribution. "Absolutely, Ghlen! That's a vital aspect of nursing. Your insight adds depth to our discussions."
Feeling a boost of confidence from Shane's supportive response, Ghlen began to actively engage in the conversation. As the day progressed, Shane continued to include him, seeking his thoughts and opinions during group activities and making sure he felt heard and valued.
During the lunch break, Shane introduced Ghlen to a few other nursing students who shared their interests. With a warm smile, he presented Ghlen to his friends named Jever, Ken, and Jovele. "Hey, everyone, this is Ghlen. He's got some really thoughtful insights and a unique perspective. I think we can all learn a lot from him."
The group warmly welcomed Ghlen, expressing curiosity about his experiences and interests. As they shared stories and exchanged ideas, Ghlen's shyness gradually melted away. The support and acceptance he received from Shane and the other students created a safe and encouraging environment.
Ghlen felt excited as he was introduced to Shane's friends, Jever, Ken, and Jovele. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart, and smiled at the group.
Shane initiated the conversation. "So, Ghlen, we were just discussing our career aspirations in nursing. What made you choose this path?"
Ghlen's shyness began to fade as he felt the genuine interest from the group. "Well, I've always had a passion for helping others, and nursing seemed like the perfect way to combine that with my interest in healthcare. I believe in making a positive impact on people's lives."
Jever, an outgoing and charismatic individual, nodded in agreement. "That's awesome, Ghlen! We need more compassionate people like you in this field. So, what area of nursing are you most interested in?"
Ghlen considered the question for a moment before responding. "I'm really drawn to pediatrics. I love working with children and being able to provide care and support to them during challenging times. It's incredibly rewarding."
Ken, the thoughtful and observant member of the group, chimed in. "Pediatrics can be both rewarding and demanding. It takes a special kind of person to work with children. What do you think will be the biggest challenge you'll face in this area?"
Ghlen paused, reflecting on the question. "I believe the biggest challenge will be maintaining a balance between emotional attachment and professional boundaries. It's crucial to be empathetic and compassionate, but at the same time, we need to be able to handle difficult situations without becoming too emotionally overwhelmed."
Jovele, who had been listening intently, nodded in agreement. "Absolutely, Ghlen. It's a delicate balance, but with time and experience, you'll learn to navigate it. We're all here to support each other through these challenges."
As the conversation continued, Ghlen found himself opening up more, sharing his own experiences and listening to the stories and perspectives of his new friends. The initial shyness that had once plagued him was replaced by a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
Throughout the lunch break, Ghlen, Shane, Jever, Ken, and Jovele exchanged ideas, offering advice and insights into the nursing field. They discussed their hopes, fears, and aspirations, forming a bond that went beyond the classroom.
By the end of the lunch break, Ghlen realized that he had found a supportive circle of friends who shared his passion for nursing. The warmth and acceptance he felt from Shane, Jever, Ken, and Jovele eased his initial fears, and he knew that together they would navigate the challenges of their nursing journey.
Little did they know that this chance meeting during their first day of school would mark the beginning of a strong friendship, a friendship built on shared experiences, mutual support, and the common goal of making a difference in the lives of others through their chosen profession.
