My husband can't watch me get hurt

1023 Words
Reina’s POV It had been a week since the night I drank too much and kissed my husband like I had something to prove. And for three days now… he had been gone. The mansion felt different without Sebastian. Quieter. Colder. Even though the servants hovered around me as if I were made of fragile glass. “Mrs. Reina, your tea.” “Mrs. Reina, should I prepare your bath?” “Mrs. Reina, please allow me.” They wouldn’t let me lift a finger. The female staff followed me like gentle shadows, smiling, attentive, obedient. Even the guards outside straightened whenever I passed. And yet… I felt alone. I didn’t realize how used to his presence I had become. His voice in the hallways. His teasing remarks. The way he would appear suddenly and disrupt my thoughts. I missed him. And that realization unsettled me more than anything else. After hours of pretending to enjoy their company, I decided I needed air. “I’ll be going out,” I announced. The room fell silent. One of the maids exchanged nervous glances with another. I ignored it and walked toward the garage. The moment I reached for one of the car doors, hurried footsteps approached. “Mrs. Reina!” I turned to see the chief security officer almost jogging toward me. “I’m sorry, ma’am,” he said respectfully, slightly breathless. “But I can’t let you leave the house unless our boss is around.” I blinked at him. “Excuse me?” “Those were his direct instructions.” My jaw tightened. “I am not a prisoner.” “It’s for your safety, ma’am.” “My safety from what?” I demanded. He hesitated. That hesitation irritated me more than his refusal. “I just want to go shopping.” “I understand, but if anything happens, I could lose my job.” “And if nothing happens?” He didn’t answer. Stubbornness rose inside me. “Fine,” I said sharply. “Then I won’t take the car.” I turned away before he could react. Within minutes, I had convinced Maria — the house help I liked the most — to accompany me. We left through a smaller exit. I didn’t think twice. --- The supermarket was bright and lively. Ordinary. Normal. I allowed myself to relax as Maria pushed the cart beside me. We weren’t even buying anything serious. Just random items to pass time. I was reaching for a bottle on a shelf when it happened. A loud bang. Then another. Screams erupted instantly. For a second, my mind didn’t process it. Gunshots. Maria grabbed my arm. “Madam!” Another shot rang out. And I saw him. A masked man. His weapon raised. Pointed directly— At me. Time slowed. I moved instinctively, dropping to the side as the bullet flew past. Pain burned across my right arm. A sharp sting. I gasped. It grazed me. Chaos exploded around us. People running. Shelves falling. Guards shouting. Maria dragged me down behind a counter as more shots fired — but not randomly. Focused. Deliberate. On me. Within minutes, armed responders stormed the building. The shooter fled. But the message had already been delivered. This wasn’t random. Someone wanted me dead. --- Sebastian’s POV I landed that evening. The moment my car pulled into the driveway, I sensed something was wrong. Too many guards. Too much tension. I stepped out and saw the chief security waiting. His face was pale. “What happened?” He hesitated. That was all I needed. My chest tightened. “Where is my wife?” “She’s inside, sir. She’s fine, but—” “But what?” “There was… an incident.” My blood ran cold. I walked past him without another word. When I entered the living room and saw Reina sitting there with her arm bandaged… Something inside me snapped. I moved toward her instantly. “Are you hurt?” “It’s just a graze—” “Just a graze?” My voice rose. She flinched. And that only made me angrier — not at her. At everyone else. I turned sharply toward the chief security. “I left clear instructions.” “Sir, she insisted—” “I don’t care if she insisted!” I thundered. “You were supposed to protect her!” He lowered his head. “I almost lost my wife today.” The word hung heavy in the air. Wife. Reina’s eyes widened slightly. “I’ll accept any punishment, sir,” the chief said quietly. I was ready to dismiss him on the spot. But then— “Sebastian.” Her voice. Soft. Firm. I looked at her. “It wasn’t his fault. I left without permission.” That irritated me even more. “You could have died,” I said, turning back to her. “But I didn’t.” “That’s not the point!” Silence fell. I forced myself to breathe. Then I did what needed to be done. I stepped aside and pulled out my phone. Her father answered on the second ring. “Sebastian?” “There was an attack.” The silence on the other end was heavy. “She’s alive,” I added immediately. “A minor injury.” “What happened?” “Someone targeted her. It was not random.” My voice hardened. “I will find out who did this.” “You’re sure?” her father asked quietly. “I am certain.” I glanced at Reina. She was watching me. Not scared. Not crying. Just looking at me… differently. “I promise you,” I continued, “I will stop at nothing until I uncover who tried to hurt your daughter.” When I ended the call, I turned to her. “You will not step outside this mansion again without me.” Her chin lifted slightly. “I’m not fragile.” “No,” I said softly, walking closer. “You’re not.” I stopped right in front of her. “But you are mine to protect.”
