Chapter 1: Dispute with the Alpha.
Roxanne felt like she would have a headache.
Standing in the wolf court and being made to defend her claim to the acres of land that were rightfully hers was something she was ready to do.
She would battle it out to the end to keep what was hers.
The only problem here were the numerous eyes that were on her. They were watching her, trying to calculate her every move and probably noting the number of times she breathed too deeply.
They were all waiting and watching for that one slip in character, that one thing she would do to show some sign of weakness, and then they would swoop in with their bland arguments and snide remarks.
"A female isn't supposed to rule a pack."
"You don't have the emotional capacity to make the right decisions."
"You'll let your fragile emotions get in the way of clear judgment."
"Are you still going to be ruling the pack even after you find your mate?"
Roxanne scoffed internally.
These were arguments she had heard over half a million times now, and it wasn't like she particularly cared for them. She'd nevber paid any heed to those who brought forth such arguments and she wasn't planning to start now. It was just that sometimes, it got tiring and she wasn't really in the mood to get tired right now. Not after this at least.
There was still a lot to do after this dispute had been settled and she needed enough energy to carry on for the rest of the day.
Roxanne straightened her posture and held her chin high.
As Luna and active leader of the Silver fang pack, she had managed to bring the pack out of the fatal state her father had left it in after his death, and now the Silver fang pack was a force to be reckoned with.
Anyone that thought she wasn't capable of leading could think whatever they wanted to think, her pack was living and breathing proof that she was more than capable.
"Can we get on with this?" someone from amidst the audience exclaimed.
Roxanne let a small smirk grow on her face at the annoyed and frustrated tone in that voice. Glad to see that she wasn't the only one who noticed the absence of the other party.
Like the mere thought of him summoned him, the doors of the courtroom burst open and in walked Alpha Zephyr of the Shimmering moon pack. He looked as stunning and as marvelous as ever.
Roxanne made a barfing sound in the back of her mind.
Her beta standing beside her gave a small nudge with a smile on her face.
'I heard that'.
Lorelai was always extra sensitive to the thoughts of others. She and her mate Adrian were Roxanne's appointed betas and they were two of the people she trusted the most in her pack.
'Is the mind link still open?' Roxanne asked, trying to communicate with her beta through the link they had.
Lorelai replied in the affirmative, posture straight and back as rigid as a rock.
'It's still open, and did you have to barf at the sight of him? Many wolves think he is more than good looking, y'know'
Roxanne made another barfing sound that made her Beta almost chortle in amusement.
'He's more like a prancing peacock, a prancing peacock who can't even keep to time.'
Zpehry's deep voice boomed in the space of the court.
"I'm sorry to have kept you all waiting, I had some business to round up in my pack. Special apologies to you Luna."
Zephyr's milky ash eyes were the first thing that you would notice about him, like the name of his pack, they were akin to a shimmering moon, and Roxanne would be enchanted if not for the fact that she was annoyed. She replied primly.
"No offense taken Alpha. I suppose we can start with the settlement of the dispute now."
Zephyr nodded in the affirmative and the murmurs that were flying about the courtroom simmered down. The room was engulfed in total silence.
The wolf court had been established because of cases like this.
They dealt in settling matters that threatened the peace and harmony of any two packs. From land disputes, to alleged crimes, and to the smallest grievances a pack might have against another, the wolf court would be there to handle it. This matter was a small one, one that Roxanne would have preferred settled out of court but Zephyr was being stubborn about it. The piece of real estate in question was near the border of both packs.
Zephyr claimed that her father sold the land to him while he was sixteen years old, but he didn't get any receipts or evidence of ownership. It was obvious that the former Alpha of the Silver fang pack had duped him and taken advantage of his youth and naivety, but Zephyr didn't want to hear that.
He firmly believed that what he had paid for was his and that was what this was all about.
As the elder that headed the wolf court read out the details of the dispute that had been presented to him earlier, Roxanne asked her beta a question through the mind link.
'Why do you think Zephyr is being so stubborn on this? We did offer to pay him back and even double the amount as compensation, didn't we?'
Lorelai replied in the affirmative and let out a small sigh as she replied, 'When it comes to matters between two packs, things aren't always as they seem.... He could be avoiding losing face to you'
Roxanne sneered at that statement and Lorelai added, 'or he could also have an emotional attachment to that area. It might be anything'.
As the voice of the elder wolf finally died out, Roxanne looked at her opponent to see his eyes already on her, in a scorchingly intense gaze and with his mouth in a tight line.
She frowned slightly.
It was time for both of them to bring forth their arguments so the wolf court would be able to decide and make a final decision on the matter. Alpha Zephyr was supposed to present his case but instead, he was staring at her.
"I have a question to ask Luna Roxanne."
His voice rang out through the hall like soft thunder on a rainy night.
"Permission granted." The elder said and Zephyr directed a tender look at her.
"Would having that area at the border make you happy?"
