Chapter 2 Nova “What the f**k, Roman, what were you thinking?” “I had no choice, she was alive, I just couldn’t watch her burn to death alive.” “What the f**k is wrong with you, this is not the first time that you have burned these children so why is this one so different, why did you just complicate our lives by bringing Nova to our house.” “If they find out she is missing, we are dead, we are so screwed.” “I know, but she was alive, she was in pain.” “That is not possible, part of the experiment was to numb their ability to feel pain.” “Exactly but Nova was in pain, she was crying, Sami.” I know that voice, it’s Julius, one of the security guards from the lab and also the guard who stood by the lunatic who shot Claire and also the same guard who helped the same Lunatic set the Lab on fire. He saved me? Why did he save me? Why? “So what are we going to do?” The lady, obviously his wife, asked. “I don’t know, all I could think of was bringing her here and I did.” Those were the last words I heard before I fell unconscious. **** “So who are we testing today?” “Subject Zero,” “Oh, Nova, my favorite… make sure she is strapped to the bed, I can’t have her scratching me.” They dragged me into the OR, placed me on the bed, “Wait… please wait… don’t do this… please I beg you, don’t do this.” I cried but the doctor laughed as he lifted the drill, turning it on. “Now, Nova, you are going to make a fine weapon.” He smirked, placing the drill on my head. No! “Please stop! Marcus! Please stop!” “No!!!! Stop! Stop!!!!! Stop!” “Please stop!” “Ahhhh.” “Nova!” “Nova!” “Nova, wake up! Wake up! Nova, Wake up!” Julius' voice pulled me out of my nightmare. I screamed out of my sleep, horror plastered all over my face. I was shaking, fighting, trembling but he grabbed my hands and pulled me into his chest. “It’s over… it’s over. It’s just a nightmare. It’s over now.” He whispered. No. It’s not over. Tears rolled down my cheek, that wasn’t a dream, that was a f*****g memory, a haunting memory, one that will follow me for the rest of my life. I will continue to have this memory for as long as I live and I will feel the pain like it’s still happening. Sami and Julius endured the next two weeks with nothing but me screaming out of my sleep, trembling and shaking like I was still in that lab, strapped to the bed and that drill fighting its way into my skull. I can still hear those voices, the laughter. I can still see the bodies of the other subject, Claire’s last moment. “On today’s special, we have the opportunity to showcase one of the country's finest doctors receiving an award after successfully completing a critical surgery for 48 hours, almost breaking the world record of the longest surgery. This is Doctor John.” The anchor on the TV in the living room blurted with a smile. Julius quickly grabbed the remote to change the Channel but I stopped him. “Nova you don’t have to watch.” “Doctor John, what motivated you to perform that surgery even though the odds were against you.” The Anchor asked. “My zeal to save lives. I became a doctor because my goal is to save lives not stand and watch it end or contribute to its end. So when I went into that OR, there was only one thing in my head, I had to save that man and I did.” I scoffed. Doctor John. The same Doctor who held me down when a drill was passed into my head, the same Doctor who sedated me after the surgery, the same doctor who used the children to practice surgery, the same doctor who took innocent lives, that took the lives of the children at the lab! That bastard! He had the nerve to smile on TV? To enjoy a life with his wife and two kids who were the same age as the children he turned to lab rats. “Argh!” I screamed, anger consumed me, pain filled my heart, and my head hurt. “Nova?” “They can’t just move on,” I screeched “Nova?” “Don’t touch me!” I screamed at Julius as he reached for me. “Nova, there is nothing you can do, you will be killed even before you get close to them,” he muttered. “And what about Claire? What about Mark? And Sandy? And Aurora? And Jane? And Luke and the other children that they killed and burnt! What about them? Are they just going to die? Just like that? No!” I blurted, glaring at him. “Nova?” “They have to pay.” “Nova!” “I will kill every single one of them! I will rip them apart! I will hunt them and their families, I will make sure they feel the exact pain they put me and everyone through, and I will avenge them! I will kill them all.” I cried out, yelling as I crumbled to the ground crying my eyes out, recalling the lifeless bodies of the other subject. Sami knelt next to me, pulling me into her arms, and hugging me tight while I cried my eyes out. Going to bed was now scary. Fear of reliving that nightmare again made it impossible for me to sleep. My door suddenly creaked open and I turned to see Sami and Julius standing before me with worry written on their faces. “What?” I rasped. Julius placed his wide palm over my mouth and used his index finger to indicate for me to keep quiet. “They found us,” Sami whispered. Oh, no! No! No! “Come.” Julius said, he took my wrist led me to a cabinet, and pushed me inside, “Stay here, no matter what you see or hear, Nova, do not come outside.” He warned and turned to his wife, “Stay here with her.” “No!” Sami grunted. “I am going with you.” “Sami!” “Julius, I am your wife, I am going with you.” She turned to me, “Stay here, do not come out.. no matter what.” “Oh, Julius!” I heard a man’s voice echoing from the living room. Julius slammed the door of the cabinet. “No, please don’t go… please,” I begged them but they smiled, smiled like they knew they weren’t going to see me again. Please don’t leave me … please don’t leave me. Just as they turned to leave, a figure appeared before them. My throat bobbed as I watched through the little space in the cabinet. Who was that man? “What do you want that can’t wait till morning?” Julius asked. The man cackled, “Julius, you know when they want something they take it…. Now you took something of theirs and they want it back. I am here to eliminate what you took, so give her up and I won’t have to touch you.” The man said. His voice sounded familiar but I couldn’t see his face. Who is he? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Julius lied without batting an eye. The man exhaled so loud I could hear him almost like he was next to me. Instantly he grabbed Sami’s throat and lifted her off the ground. Sami! “Let her go!” Julius yelled. All I could see was the man’s shadow and I knew he wasn’t going to let her go at least not without leaving a couple of bruises. “Sure.” He said nonchalantly and slammed her against the wall. Julius ran over to Sami, taking her in his arms. I shot my eyes as tears rolled down, I quickly placed my hand over my mouth, stopping myself from whimpering. “I will ask one more time, if you lie to me, she will die.” The man warned. Sami grabbed Julius and shook her head, “Don’t.” She whispered. Shaking I watched Julius deny my existence and the man did as he threatened, he pulled his trigger, gunning Sami down. I gasped, almost screaming my lungs out. Hot tears burn down my cheek. “Sami!” Julius cried out, hugging his dead wife. He gently placed her down and rushed towards the man, he grabbed him and they exchanged blows but Julius stood no chance. Bang! Another shot to Julius' chest and I watched him fall to the ground. No! No!! Not again! “Nova! I know you can hear me come out now!” The man called out, his voice sounding so familiar almost like I lived with him, grew up with him, ate with him, and suffered with him. Then it dawned on me. Fear consumed me, and doubt and disbelief spread on my face. No, it can’t be. It can’t. The man stepped closer and I could finally see his face. My eyes widened in disbelief. It’s Colin. It’s Colin?
