The Beginning of the Dread
“Jesus, you’re not even up you fat, lazy, piece of s**t! You’re gonna be in so much trouble! I can’t wait to see the beating Erick gives you for this one.” Luca yelled as he came blasting through my bedroom door; emphasizing his hatred for me by grabbing me by my hair and throwing me off the bed.
I hit the hard-wooden floor with a thump and a groan escaped my lips; I learned long ago not to make noise when I was hurt, it just fueled their need for my blood. It wasn’t always like this I used to be happy, I would smile and talk and play with Luca in the garden in front of the little cottage that we lived in with our parents. That was before their death before everyone blamed me for the death of the beta and his mate. I can remember it like it was yesterday instead of five long years ago…
Five Years Earlier…
“Sis wake up! Mom is making your special Birthday pancakes and I’m hungry!” Luca yelled from the doorway. Sunlight streamed in through my window telling me that it was indeed morning. Even though I could use a few more hours of sleep I knew Luca wouldn’t allow it, it was like he was more excited for my birthday than I was. Knowing that I needed to get up and actually doing it were two different things in my book, usually I would set my alarm to about thirty to forty-five minutes before I knew I needed to be up and into the shower because I had to have time to really get fully awake. I needed time to lay in bed and look at my phone so that I could be awake enough to get a shower.
Luca was not having any of that today though because as soon as I turned over to grab my phone and start my morning routine he darted across the threshold, jumped onto my bed, grabbed my phone out of my hands, and was out the door before I could even blink the rest of the sleep from my eyes.
“Nooope, not today little sis you can go back to bed after we have breakfast if you’re still tired. Right now it’s breakfast time! So get up and get your ass downstairs before I bring a bucket of cold water to wake you up like I did last week.” Luca laughed as he ran down the stairs away from me.
Groaning I pushed myself out of bed and walked downstairs. Missing the last step completely and falling onto my hands and knees.
“Damnit Luca see what you did!” I shouted at the floor.
“Hey that wasn’t me! Its not my fault that my baby sister in the clumsiest wolf anyone has ever met.” Luca replied staring at me from the island in the middle of the kitchen.
“Now now kids play nice and Luca you know the rules, you have to be especially nice to someone when its their Birthday.” Mom scolded us as she walked into the room. “Yes, mom” we both replied with a sigh and a laugh as I got up from the floor. While walking over to Luca I could see that mom already had most of my special birthday breakfast prepared; it looked like she had been cooking for at least an hour already, there were eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and sausage already made and sitting in the middle of the island.
I knew mom had sent Luca up to wake me up so that she could start on the pancakes. As I took my seat next to Luca and watched in wonder as my mom went about cooking the pancakes with such graceful movements it could only be classified as dancing, I couldn’t help but think about how incredible this day was going to be. I mean you only turn sixteen once and that’s supposed to be the day you never forget….right?
I didn’t know how incredibly right and wrong I could have been in that moment. It was indeed a day that I would never forget, but instead of it being because I got my first car or the biggest birthday party I could imagine, it was because that was the day that my life would change forever. That was the day that my parents would died and the life I had once know that was filled with happiness, family, pack, and love was shattered into a million pieces that couldn’t possible ever be put back together again.
