A Call From Hollywood

1433 Words
Aubrey was in her kitchen, enjoying a lazy Saturday afternoon with her friends Tiffany and Danielle. Tiffany was busy frying Taco chips while Danielle sat at the table, laptop open, snacking on the crispy treats as Aubrey prepared the guacamole for the dip. Aubrey picked up a piece of hot chips but quickly dropped it, wincing in pain. "Wow, Tiffany, these are hot!" she exclaimed. Tiffany laughed. "That's what you get for eating them straight out of the pan!" Aubrey looked as Danielle typed furiously on her laptop and said, "You know, Danielle, one day your computer is going to fry, just like these chips. You're always carrying it around, even on weekends." Danielle playfully rolled her eyes. "Hey, someone's got to keep the business running, even on Saturdays." Just then, Aubrey's phone rang. She picked it up, looking at the screen. "Oh, it's my business line." She answered the call, putting it on speaker. Tiffany turned off the stove, and the three friends gathered around the table, curious about the call. "Hello, this is Aubrey's Surprises and Event Management. How can I help you today?" Aubrey said, her voice professional and friendly. "Hi Aubrey, this is Ryder Jackson," a deep, smooth voice said from the other end of the line. Aubrey's eyes widened in surprise. Ryder Jackson was a famous Hollywood actor known for his charming smile and captivating performances. "Hi Ryder, it's great to hear from you again," Aubrey said, trying to sound calm. Ryder explained that his aunt, Mrs. Agnes Thompson, had been raving about the surprise party Aubrey had her over the weekend, and he wanted to put Mrs. Thompson on the call so Aubrey could hear firsthand how much she had enjoyed the party. There was a click, and then Mrs. Thompson's warm, melodious voice came on the line. "Hello, dear Aubrey. I just wanted to tell you how much I loved the party you planned for me. It was absolutely perfect." Aubrey beamed with pride. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Thompson. I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed it." As they chatted, Aubrey couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to work with such wonderful clients. And who knows, maybe this call would lead to even more exciting projects in the future. After the call ended, the three friends let out a collective squeal of excitement. "That was Ryder Jackson!" Tiffany exclaimed. Danielle grinned. "And Mrs.Thompson sounds like a total sweetheart. I hope she recommends you to her friends. You know how the rich aunties like to spend money on things like this?” Aubrey smiled, feeling happy and fulfilled. "I know, right? This is exactly what I love about my job – making people happy and creating unforgettable memories." As they celebrated, Aubrey suddenly had an idea. "Hey, let's go out and get some pizza to celebrate. My treat!" Tiffany and Danielle cheered in agreement, and Tifanny said, “Let’s order in, then we can have our chips and guacamole without missing out on anything. They all agreed as Aubrey picked up her phone to place the order. Aubrey sat comfortably in Emily's elegantly decorated living room, her laptop open as she typed away, capturing every detail of their conversation with care. A glass of rich, full-bodied wine sat beside her, untouched for the moment. She was focused on typing every detail of the part, as Emily wanted to avoid missing anything. On the other hand, Emily sipped her wine with evident relish. One could tell that she was a sophisticated, independent woman who was used to being in control and who was also used to sipping wines to discuss important matters. "Please, Aubrey, before I forget, look at the guest list properly, and don't invite Mrs. Robinson until the day before the event," Emily said, her voice laced with a hint of warning and amusement. "That woman can't keep a secret to save her life, and I wouldn't want anything to ruin the surprise. If you tell her a week in advance, you can bet half of Chicago will know about it, and I'd rather avoid that kind of drama." Aubrey chuckled and nodded, her fingers flying across the keyboard with practised ease. "Got it, Emily. No seafood on the menu, either. I recall you mentioning that the Illinois State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Johnson, is severely allergic to shellfish, and I wouldn't want to risk causing him any harm." Emily nodded, taking another sip of her wine, her eyes never leaving Aubrey's face. "That's right. Poor man's face swelled up like a balloon the last time he accidentally ate something with shellfish, and I wouldn't want a repeat of that incident. Let's just stick to the safe options, shall we?" "Is there anything else I should know, Emily?" Aubrey asked, her eyes locked on her laptop screen, her mind racing with all the details she needed to keep track of. Emily smiled, a faraway look in her eyes as if she were lost in thought. "I think that's all for now, dear. But tell me, what's it like being married? Do you have any children?" Aubrey's eyes widened in surprise, and she felt a flush rise to her cheeks. She reached for her glass of wine and took a huge gulp to steady herself as the question caught her unawares. "Oh, Emily, I'm not married," she said, trying to sound casual, despite the fact that she was taken aback by the question. Emily's eyes sparkled with amusement. "You don't look married, dear. I was just trying to get a glimpse into your personal life. You look like a person who is so focused on work; I was curious to know what your life outside of Aubrey’s Surprises looks like”. The two women laughed, and Aubrey felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was happy to keep the focus on her business rather than her personal life. Besides, she wasn't sure it was okay to talk to clients about her personal life as that felt intrusive. She’s always known that older women like to poke and poke into private matters, but she likes to keep her private life private. When Emily sensed that Aubrey would not divulge anything about her private life, she began to open up about her own life, sharing stories of her childhood in the rural Midwest. Aubrey listened, entranced, as Emily told her story as the wine loosened her tongue. “When I was your age, I followed a boy to Chicago. I was a naive young girl from a small town in the Midwest who had just graduated from high school. My parents had arranged for me to marry a man who was much older than me, and I was horrified at the thought of being his wife. I felt trapped and desperate to escape” “When Christmas came around, I met a charming young man who swept me off my feet. He promised me a new life in the city, and I didn't think twice before following him to Chicago. But when I got here, I discovered that he was a no-good drunk who beat me whenever he got the chance. It was a nightmare”. “After that experience, I vowed never to marry. Emily said, her voice matter-of-fact, as if she were discussing the weather. Life's too short to waste on someone who doesn't treat you right. I've always believed that a woman should be independent, financially and emotionally, and that's exactly what I've strived for all my life." Aubrey's heart went out to Emily, and she felt a deep sense of respect for this strong, independent woman. She couldn't help but admire Emily's strength and resilience and felt truly sorry that she had to experience all that. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that, Emily," Aubrey said, her voice sincere, her words heartfelt. Emily waved her hand dismissively. "Don't be sorry, dear. I'm proud of the woman I've become. And I see a lot of myself in you – strong, determined, and fiercely independent. You're going to do great things, Aubrey, mark my words." Aubrey smiled. "Thank you, Emily. That means a lot coming from you." Emily leaned forward as they finished their wine, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Now, tell me, Aubrey, what's your story? What made you start Aubrey Surprises? I want to hear everything." Emily chuckled as she began telling the story of how she was laid off from work and how a surprise birthday party she had organized for her friend went viral.
