Prologue
The first things a pack, or its members, does when facing a rogue is to fight. They growl and stare menacingly, or if in their wolf form, their fur will stand on end and they bare their teeth. The second thing a pack does is to attack. There are never any words spoken between a pack member and a rogue.
Except they didn't attack me. I was a rogue. Granted I was only a week old, but I was still a rogue. I had been since the day I was born. My parents were rogues as well, before they were killed for stepping onto pack territory. It didn't matter that they were running from their former lives, only that they were rogue. That, and that they hadn't asked permission to step onto pack land.
I was strapped to my mother's back. Barely a week old, and too young to be on my own. I should have been killed like my parents. The pack patrol and guards had been fully prepared to kill a newborn pup with not a single ounce of remorse. At least they would have, had the Alpha and Luna arrived when they did.
The Luna of the Grey Mist Lake pack told the Alpha if he had me killed, she would leave. Any Alpha would do anything for their Luna, their mates and loves of their lives. So therefore, the Alpha of the Grey Mist Lake pack agreed to spare my barely started life. They were only a year into the start of their roles as Alpha and Luna, both respectively 20 years old. They hadn't even had pups of their own yet and here they were, taking in an orphaned rogue pup.
They took me in and raised me as their own pup. They treated me like their own children that eventually had. Two sons and a daughter. My name is Evelyn Elizabeth Waters and I was born on the Summer Solstice, June 22 in 1993. My younger (by a year) brother's name is Maxwell Anthony Waters born on April 1, 1994. My sisters, twins, are Melody Alyssa Waters and Merida Ashley Waters born on November 17 1997. We lives in the South Western United States in New Mexico and our territory spanned into both Texas and Arizona. Our pack had over 250 members and we had a central packhouse in Silver City, butting up against the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. We could let our wolves run free whenever we wanted.
I stood at 5'7" with long honey colored hair and grey eyes ringed by violet. I had constantly tanned skin and was quite curvy for a werewolf. I looked nothing like any of my family members, but I had never questioned it. Even though I looked different, everyone knew I was the Alpha and Luna's daughter. I was treated with respect and trained with the warriors. I never looked at myself and thought that I would ever have been considered a rogue.
Needless to say, my pack was my family. We all watched each other's backs and made efforts to settle any disputes or differences we had. I was immediately accepted into the pack the day the Alpha and Luna brought me home. It was also the day that everything would begin to change.
Unbeknownst to my parents, they started a path for me to take the day they took me in. If they would have been able to see the future, they may have altered their actions, but no one has the ability to see the future, and my parents would never have abandoned me. They made their choices and I was the one who would be living the consequences for the rest of my life.
My father, Alpha Gerard Antonio Waters and my mother, Luna Meredith Eleanor Waters, changed the future for, not just me, not our pack, but for werewolves, pack or rogue, everywhere. Once word got out about what had transpired that fateful night, Alphas everywhere changed the rules on rogues and killing on sight. They didn't want any more innocent blood on their hands, nor anymore rogue pups. New measures and protocols were put in place in the event (which has happened) that rogues stepped onto any packs territory.
Growing up I knew nothing but love, laughter and kindness. Sure I was disciplined, but never any beatings or solitary confinement. If I broke the rules, I had to pay the consequences. Usually if we were in trouble, our parents would use our full names. If something bad had happened in our pack, they usually only used our middles names.
Tomorrow would be my 18th birthday and I would finally be able to shift. Werewolves are not able to shift into their wolf forms until they are considered an adult. When wolves turn 18, the wolf that inhabits their body unlocks and is able to communicate with their human selves. They are then able to shift and run with the pack.
