Before The Leap
Being from a different form of existence entirely had its benefits. I could be anyone I wanted or needed to be. My life was perfect on paper. I was the Keeper of the Human Souls. Lucifer Nightengale and I had become overprotective of four of the souls. They would be Kade Hanlon, Raegan MacKinnley, Liam Kenzington, Matty Carrow, and Cole Ryan. Cole was not part of our merry band of souls but was linked to Matty.
Michael would use many of the souls as hacky sacks, which wasn't usually a problem. The souls could not feel pain from being hit. On this occasion, he had been using Kade as his ball. "Michael, if you don't stop kicking Kade, I will rip your wings off." Michael just let him drop to the ground and walked away with a sneaky smile. I knew what that smile meant, but I did not care. Kade just rolled over to me and stuck his blob arms up. "Can I sit on your shoulder?" As always, I said yes. He jumped into my hand, and I put him on my shoulder. I got him to safety. I looked at Lucifer, knowing what was about to happen. He took all our souls to the safest place we had. Michael had gone to the war god telling on me like a child. The war god came barreling in, picking me up in one hand with my wings.
I knew it would be bad; I didn't know it would be this bad. My wings were shattered. My resolve never wavered, though. "I protect the souls in my care! Michael was using one soul as a hacky sack! I won't stand for it!" The god looked at me with a sick smile. "Then don't stand at all. You know what your orders are. Why do you disrespect me this way? Do you think those souls love you? They cannot. Love is not part of their programming. The sooner you and your i***t brother get that fact through your heads, the sooner you fall back in line!" My eyes flashed a red that I would later learn was Hellfire. "You do not even understand human souls. You did not create them. My mother created them all! You... You just took the credit!” I yelled in his face. “I am not even your child! I will protect my boys till I die!" I stood taller than I had in my aeons of existence. I had unlocked a form I would later learn was a titan form.
The war god looked like a child as I looked down at him. Lucifer saw me and knew a war was coming. We had to act fast. The war was won by none other than Matty. She slapped the war god across the face with enough force that he flew to the other side of The Silver City.
After I had been titan-sized, I could not shrink back down. I did the next best thing and became my falcon morph. Unfortunately, I was still the same size as the other angels. They knew something was off. Lucifer was thrown out of the Silver City. Matty, Kade, Raegan, Liam and a soul I had come to know as Cole threw themselves off the edge, putting themselves into circulation.
I jumped off the edge myself, but not before saying, "I do this for the protection of human souls. No being shall touch them." The war god let out a scream in anger that was muffled by the distance. "My word is my bond." The war god knew I had given up my Heavenly status the second I had flashed Hell in my eyes. I had to find them all and protect them.
My love for them never ended. I would find them in every life. This life was different, though. I would be a student at a school for the magically inclined. I had to be born this time around. I knew my wings would have to be hidden till I met my loves again.
I have met them many times in my many lives as a human being. I had done my best to protect them. I made a soul contract with Kade, Raegan and Liam. They were to be mine till the end of time.
I became a demon to protect them. Did that make me evil or willing to sacrifice the world for them? I’ll let you decide.
My name is Lyra Nightengale, and I have been alive and Awake for too long. Kade, Raegan and Liam all lose their memories of us every time they die. We must go through life making new memories till they spark the old ones. I have to see them die repeatedly. I am tired of having them die for nothing. I won’t allow their deaths to be meaningless. I won’t have them die anymore. I will bring them home.
