At my exclamation, he smiled weakly. He must’ve been relieved to get everything off his chest. “I’m sorry, Lauren. I shouldn’t have told you that, but I wanted to explain why I need to be here. What’s going on with you? You mentioned another threat?”
“Hold on. I don’t understand. Was your friend telling the truth, or did he just make up the story to protect you?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know. In any case, they believed him, even though the killer was never caught. Now please, let’s move on. What happened to you?”
I got up and brought the note I’d found over to him. “Read this. It looks like whoever wrote it knows where I am.”
His face grew grim as he scanned the sentence. “Maybe it’s good I’ll be staying here then.”
I somewhat agreed, but I didn’t have much time to
