CHAPTER FORTY The bad man was carrying me and pulling Patty along toward the small house. A woman stood in the doorway. As we got closer, I saw it was the lady who stayed at Mr. Mason’s house a lot now since Maureen moved out. I think her name was Helen. She was smiling at us, so I felt less afraid. “Come on in, girls,” Helen said opening the door. “Jack, you’ve done a great job, but you’re not finished.” The bad man pushed us into the house. Patty began crying again. “You don’t have to be so rough.” Helen took both our hands and led us to two chairs facing an unlit fireplace. The house didn’t have much furniture, and I noticed some cobwebs hanging from the ceiling beams. Mommee always used to knock those down with a broom. “Now sit quietly, girls. We’re going to play a little game.”
