The dinner wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated. My dad enjoyed discussing his latest projects, both at work and whatever he was tinkering with in the garage. Surprisingly, my dad and Jax found they had a lot in common. My dad worked with cyber circuitry, and Jax was a bit of a tech enthusiast as well. Who would have thought?
After dinner, they even headed to the garage to work on the car my father had purchased, while my mother and I tidied up. My mother had been unusually quiet, which was unexpected. As we stood in the kitchen, cleaning up while the men indulged in their hobbies, I struggled to find words.
“Thank you for having us,” I finally said.
“It’s not like we get a chance to see you often,” my mother replied, her tone tinged with blame.
