CHAPTER FORTY “Hope you like it black,” the officer said. She placed a paper cup in front of Linda and turned on the television. “Vending machine is out of creamer and we don’t have a cappuccino machine.” “That’s fine,” Linda replied. The officer’s attempt at humor didn’t phase her and she didn’t smile. “Detective Vega will be here shortly. I’ll be at my desk but you can ring for room service.” The officer opened the door and her laughter echoed down the hallway. Still not funny, thought Linda. She yawned, and watched the news report.
