CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE The boat sailed down the Hudson River towards Ellis Island. It made her think of all her relatives who came to this country for freedom. They came, because in other countries they were told what to believe, and how to believe it. They escaped political unrest and famine. They left harsh conditions, where war and terrorism had created a culture of hate. They called the U.S. the New World. Linda looked up at the Statue of Liberty and thought Lady Liberty represented a sort of mother of protection. ‘Mother of Exiles’ wrote Emma Lazarus. A proud, but tired mother, with children running amuck all over a huge, bustling country, the statue a symbol of love, amid strife.
