Prologue
Everything you've been told up until now? It's all been a lie.
Every single thing. The world is not what you think it is. There are
secrets, dark ones, that people have been hiding for centuries. And
those secrets? They’re called vampyres.
Before you freak out—no, they don’t sparkle in the sunlight or turn
into bats. And no, they don’t drink the blood of random victims.
That’s all nonsense. Vampyres are more controlled than that. They can
keep their hunger in check. They don’t live in the shadows either,
lurking in alleyways or waiting for you to turn a corner. They just
prefer the night because, let’s face it, the sun’s not exactly their
friend. And burning to ash at first light? Definitely a myth.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Let me introduce myself first. I’m Jade Carter. I was a normal
seventeen-year-old girl—until yesterday. I was walking home from
school, minding my own business, when I ran into the one person who
was about to turn my life upside down: Dr. Carter.
He's the town doctor, the guy everyone trusts, the one everyone goes
to when something’s wrong. People say he's easy to talk to, like he
can read your mind. I always thought it was a little weird, but I
didn't care enough to dig deeper.
Turns out, I should've cared.
I found out everything last night. And now, I’m not so sure if I’ll
ever be the same again.
