Chapter Two: New World

The day her father announced that they were moving Anna had just gotten used to the idea of being in her home with her mother gone. It had been a hard several months for the whole family, but her father knew what was best. So, two months later, they were on a boat headed for America, Anna was excited at the idea of going to a new place and meeting new people. Especially since she wasn’t alone. She had her family with her.

All her brothers came except Antonio, he stayed to continue handling the family’s business in Italy. Her father planned on building an empire and he would need his connections to do it. It took about three months for them to get settled into their new home in New York. Vincenzo worked fast and got her into school, her other brothers worked with their father in the family wine shop. When Anna came home from school, she helped take care of Giovani.

Her grandmother taught her how to keep a home and how to cook, eventually time flew by. At the age of sixteen she was doing all the cooking and cleaning for her family. He had never remarried at least not yet and Anna took her responsibilities seriously. As her sixteenth birthday came, she started to get interested in boys. But her father made it clear that he would have to approve.

Vincenzo was a strong believer in arranged marriages. He and his wife's marriage had been arranged and in time they fell in love, that was what he wanted for Anna. Anna on the other hand had a very different idea of what she wanted for her future. But she knew she could never tell her father. The other children in her class liked her well enough even though she was from Italy and had a heavy accent especially when she was made.

She learned English very quickly and spoke it as well as anybody else. She excelled in her schoolwork so much so that they wanted to skip her a grade a head. But Vincenzo wouldn't allow it, he was a firm believer in education, he wanted her to eventually go to college and get a degree in something that she could use to help the family. Anna was fine with that, she wanted to become a lawyer, which was unheard of but her father supported her dream and he knew she would use her knowledge to help the family.

She had two years left of high school and then it was onward to another school to become a lawyer. A year passed and her father announced he was finally getting remarried. Anna was happy for her father, this new woman Antonia seemed to make him happy and she was a kind woman who cared for Anna and her brothers.

The wedding celebration and wedding came just two months after her father had announced it. As happy as she was for her father, Anna was still a bit sad. She wanted to be able to find love and be happy. But she knew she had to wait and finish her schooling. She had only a year left and even though she was quiet and kept to herself, her beauty had caught the attention of some of the most popular boys in school. One in particular really had his attention on her, but Anna ignored him.

He was one of those guys who only wanted on thing, to claim another trophy. As good looking as he was, Anna could have care less, she had her eye on someone else. Someone no one would have ever guessed had caught her attention.
