Chapter Two

1011 Words
***Kathrine's POV***     I couldn't meet anyone's eyes as I handed the drink over to Jake, normally I was better than this, but today I was just in an off mood and Nessa hadn't really helped by putting me on the spot like that, but I kept telling myself it didn't really matter too much in the end.  Really hot guy with a great sense of humor and most likely a girlfriend now knows I am single, well, maybe he has a decent friend that he could introduce me to.     "Yeah, some of my friends made me get one before I moved here so they can keep in touch since I don't like talking on the phone much."     "That's really cool, glad to hear you have a way to keep in touch with your friends.  Would you happen to have a pen and some paper that I could use?"  Jake's voice had a slightly more serious note to it, though looking at him for a moment, he seemed to be rather pleased with something.     "Sure, one moment, need a larger piece of paper or a smaller one?"  I went to where we kept some spare papers and waited for him to answer.     "Oh a small one will do,  I don't need to write down a lot."  I handed him the paper and looked for Nessa, who just smiled and headed back into the back room with some dirty plates, leaving me alone in the front with Jake.  "So what is that book that you keep reading when it is slower?  I noticed you seem to get really into it and was wondering about it."     "Well, it's just one of my favorite books is all.  It's a bit different, but I like it, actually this is my second copy of it because I lost my first a while back."  If all the work was done and it was a slower day, I'd sit at one end reading, at least when my manager wasn't there trying to talk my ear off or making busy work for me.  In all the moving and travelling before I came back here I had lost my other copy.  I was planning to pick up the next book in the series soon since I knew now there were three.     Another customer came in at that moment, saving me from further conversation at the moment, ordering something fairly quick and easy, Jake sitting in his corner the whole time,  occasionally tapping the piece of paper, but I felt more relaxed than before, I guess talking about one of my favorite books had helped me relax a little more.  When the customer left, Jake asked me a few more questions about the book and I ended up promising him somehow that I would search to see if we had another copy of it in the store.     "Unfortunately it seems my break is almost over and I need to get back to work."  Sometime in the conversation I had relaxed enough that I actually didn't panic or freak out when he reached across the counter to poke me in the side, causing me to jump some as he actually had found a sensitive spot and it made me squirm some, to which he laughed at me.   As I settled down again, watching his hands carefully he just laughed again, handing me the piece of paper that he had been writing on before heading out the door with a rather bouncy stride.  Unfolding the paper I saw his name and email written across the paper and remembered how we had been talking about myspace before. I put the paper in my pocket where it would be safest and wondered why he did that, maybe he did have a friend that he thought I would like.  I felt a little sting in my heart,  and tried not to think of what wouldn't ever happen. ***Nessa's POV***     I'd been watching them for a while, and while the other's kind of watched and accepted the surface act that Kat showed the world, I had seen a bit more to it with her, we were close to the same age, Kat being 25 and me being 22, but she seemed so much older in some ways.  She almost always had a smile on her face, even when she was being teased or in the middle of a conversation she would seem excited and lively, but when she was on her own or not part of the conversation, she would get this look in her eyes like she wanted to talk more but didn't dare.  Still she never really got flustered or blushed ever until he came along, and he could almost always push her buttons somehow to make her blush, even saying the same things someone else had said to her.         Watching him on the other hand, was interesting as well, and had helped me to form my guess at this whole situation.  He didn't sit up towards the front really unless Kat was working, and while he would talk with most of us with ease, he seemed to focus on her more when she was here, and really only let her make the drinks that he liked so much.  I knew I might be pushing things a little for her when I announced that in front of him, but the two had been carefully dancing around that for a while, and I was still amazed that no one else had thought the same thing as me, then again, I usually ended up working more shifts with her in the day than anyone else.     I had a moment to pause though as I thought about the plotting I had done, and I hoped that I hadn't just made Kat's life more difficult.  Kat was a dedicated hard worker, and loved her job, but she was always working around other things, Kat was a single mom with one of the cutest little toddlers you'd ever see.
