Chapter 5
“Hey babe, I’ve been looking for you”
I heard as I snapped my neck to the side, wondering what the hell Liam was doing.
Molly, however, did not miss a beat.
“Liam! What are you doing with… Her? toying around with the trash again?” She drawled out sarcastically.
“You know, Molly, maybe you wouldn’t have to use your family name and money to buy every friendship you have if you weren’t such a b**£h all the time” Liam replied with discussed dripping from his voice.
Her eyes squinted into slits
“And maybe if you had any respect for your family name, you wouldn’t be left, hanging out with the weirdos and the charity cases” Molly replied in that fake, sweet voice.
Liam chuckled, shaking his head, but the smile on his lips soon turned into a straight line and his eyes into a glare.
“Just stay the f**k away from Nicole, I would hate to make your life a living hell, and I think you know just as well as I do, how capable I am of that” he seethed
Molly just grinned “hmmmmm maybe I don’t want to. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.” She said with a wink, turning around and walking away, her posse, following behind all giggling.
Well… They definitely have history. And the way it sounds definitely not a good one. that’s still doesn’t explain why he got defensive over me though.
At that point, Molly had walked away, and I was wondering why he didn’t take his hands off me. I grabbed his hand on my shoulder between my thumb and a pointer finger and lifted it which seemed to snap him out of his thoughts.
“You OK?” he asked.
“ yeah… I’m fine” I said, wiping the tears off of my cheeks. “ listen, I appreciate it and all but you realize that’s just gonna make me more of a target now, right?” I continued.
“That’s not going to happen” he said, very casually.
But I had questions, more than one now.
“Wait what are you even doing here? Why did you step in? Are you following me?”
Liam just gave me an amused expression
”I’m not following you. It’s Friday, There’s a local band playing at a bar I can get into”
“ OK but that doesn’t answer my question. Why are you HERE? as in right by me. Why did you step in?”
“Molly and her friends are pathetic. So are most of the people that f*****g school. All they care about is social status and competing with each other. Excuse me for wanting to knock her down a peg when I given the opportunity” he replied.
“Oh .. okay that makes sense” I muttered. I get where he’s coming from but there’s so much about him that I don’t understand and there’s definitely built-up tension between him and Molly.
“Well, I’m just gonna head home. Thanks for .. you know” I said as I turned around to the direction I came from. I didn’t need to see the café today, I’ve seen enough..
Before I could take more than a step, Liam grabbed my wrist
“Wait, I told you there’s a live show tonight at a bar two blocks away. Come with me.”
It was a more of a statement than a question, and I just raised my eyebrow at him
“Me, a bar? Night life? Not really my scene but thanks” I said as I tried to walk away again but the grip on my wrist got tighter. I don’t know why, but him tightening his large hand around my wrist sent tangles up my spine and caused my heartbeat to quicken.
“You’re coming.” he stated matter-of-factly. What a cocky ba*****d. “You don’t talk to anybody at school, every single night you’re out on that hammock with your nose stuck in a book. You don’t do anything fun. So just tonight, let’s just pretend you’re not a bookworm huh?”
“I had friends, you know, where I moved from. I have a boyfriend and a best friend, not to mention so many other people I was forced to walk away from.” I replied, surprising myself by the anger in my voice.
“And what do you suppose I do in my free time? Get drunk and stay out until God knows how late, and hang out with people who don’t know me and don’t care about me?”
Liam pinched the bridge of his nose and side, his feature softening a little bit, which was… Odd. He always looked like he was scowling or angry.
“Listen, don’t let Molly think she scared you off. Just come hang out for a little bit and I’ll give you a ride home after. You shouldn’t be walking in the dark anyway.” He said, raising one eyebrow at me giving me a questioning look.
“Fine” I said
“Fine?” he replied with a smirk.
“Yes, fine, let’s see what the bad boy does for fun on a Friday night” I said finding myself grinning.
Liam took my hand and we walked together to the bar.
“Liam… How am I gonna get in? I am only 18, don’t you have to be 21 to get in there … wait! How are you getting in?”
Liam’s lips twitched upwards as he leaned in and whispered in my ear “Just trust me” his hot breath on my ear and neck sent shivers down my spine. My core clenched and my cheeks started to get hot. Why is he making me feel like this? And why did I actually trust him. He’s never been anything but a jerk to me and I barely know him..
I looked up at him, and our eyes met. I just opened my lips slightly and nodded as he continued to lead the way .
Turns out, Liam knew almost every bouncer at this place. And the bartender, go figure. The bar wasn’t what I expected. Certainly more of a local feel than a club. There was a wooden platform where live a live band was playing. I wasn’t in my element but this was nice.
Liam told me to find a seat and he would find me for naturally I took the table off to the corner.
“Why did I have a feeling this is where you would end up sitting” he chuckled as I saw him walk towards me with two beers in his hand.
I smiled up at him. What was I getting myself in to?
“Drink” he said as he placed the amber liquid in front of me. He noticed me staring at it. Although I wasn’t looking at him, I could tell he was smiling as he said “ don’t tell me you’ve never drank before?”
“I’ve drank before!” I retorted defensively.
“Yeah? Then drink it. Let loose Nicole”
Taking him by surprise, I looked him in the eyes as I lifted the pint glass to my lips and drank it all in one chug.
